Hi, very interesting, my favourite is your No 12, Beatles For Sale! PS I'm convinced that in the second half of a song you mention, Oh Darling, Paul sings 'Oh Johnny', turning it into a song of regret about his declining friendship with John.

@@shomershabbos6291 Oh yes, and I think that Paul and John's duet on Words of Love is fantastic too - plus the jangly guitar from George which, I believe, influenced the Byrds' Mr Tambourine Man. This is the only Buddy Holly song they did on an 'official' LP and is shows how very clever they were - they carefully chose a brilliant song which (I think anyway) Buddy didn't record as well as he usually did, and turned it into a masterpiece - for me the only ever Buddy Holly cover, by anyone, which is better than the original. Others have come close (Don Maclean's covers for example) but nobody better, except those wonderful Beatles. And Rock and Roll Music, another stunning John vocal, is so so much better than Chuck's original!

I guess ya had ta be there! You rate lesser LPs over far better, more significant albums, groundbreaking, even, then end the list with one of Paul's less successful R 'n' B crushers. Roots rock was big, in 1969, when the Beatles began recording what would eventually (15 months later, and some) become Let It Be, a song that spanned the demise of the world's best rock 'n' roll band of all time. Not to make too much of a good thing, but the Fab Four rarely fell off the mark. They set the standards forwhat was then Top 40 rock 'n' roll, 1966- to 1970. Top 40 was the market, if you wanted to sell records, and few artists even come close to the Beatles for singles, @1s, Top Ten hits, and album sales. I bought the lads on vinyl, 8-track, cassette, reel-to-reel, and an endless number of digital formats, now, from ordinary CDs to SACD, and MFSL. The original mixes didn't translate to CD very well, so a second round of CDs brought the sound to crystal clarity. Capitol added reverb and boosted the bass range on their masters, tinkering with some of the songs, and producing one stellar album, Beatles VI, a pop gem almost perfectly cut. At only 27 minutes, 34 seconds, the album's only flaw is its brevity. Sorta like a Beatles concert, in those days, too, for those few of us lucky enough to see them. They raced out, played for around a half hour, and raced off, no encore. You couldn't hear much, anyway, because of the screaming, and the boys playing with 100-watt amplifiers, Vox I think, one each. Their output was fed into the PA system, at Red Rocks, pretty good, but at Shea, and places like the DC concert in DC, they were drowned out by screaming girls. A few boys, no doubt, but mostly high-pitched voices that blotted out much of the sound. It was more of a social event, for them, like Sigourney Weaver, famously at the Hollywood Bowl show. As you might have noticed, it's easy to ramble on about the Beatles, when you were a teenager in 1964. We were recovering from the murder of a popular young President, by the same kind of assholes making trouble, today. They never learn, never go away, like a fungus, or a bad cold. I've noticed a difference in those who came to the Beatles after the band's demise. Fans who encountered the music, as teenagers, but via Let It Be, or the White Album, have a very different perspective. When the Beatles hit the airwaves, in my case, in late November, or early December, 1963, ten to fifteen days after the shocking news of the assassination of JFK, I heard two Beatles tunes, boths sides of a single, on KOMA, a 50,000-watt station in Oklahoma City (I was in Grand Junction CO, 750 miles away, across the Rocky Mountains). I think it was the first time I heard I Saw Her Standing There, but it could have been She Loves You, I've heard everything the band produced hundreds of times, thousands of times for some songs, including both of those. I listened to the station on a big old Philco radio, or maybe Zenith, it's beent too long to remember which, but it was a large, tube-radio I could tune to any station it picked up. Someone must have put up a good aerial for it, because it picked up KOMA pretty good, given AM-radio norms, only drifting the signal when storms clouded the mountains wests of us. Most of the winter months, if could be touch and go, with nights when the sky was so clear, it was like the station was broadcasting from downtown Grand Junction, not five miles away. Other nights, I'd have to go channel-surfing with the big dial, try to find something being blown my way, by the storms that were blocking KOMA. The importance of the Beatles lies in the changes they caused, from top to bottom, and side to side, in the music industry. Before the Beatles, rockabilly sometimes delivered good songs, most recently, though it was languishing, several artists going straight Country, some dying off, or fading away. Rock and Roll was in the doldrums, with fake, manufactured, "Teen Idol" wannabes, like Fabian and Bobby Rydell, gold-plate-on-plastic Elvis pretenders. The Kingsmen did the nasty, with Louie, Louie, but a novelty song is a novelty song. The Beatles brought a whole new way of doing the same old thing, when they arrived in the US. The lads from Liverpool were supposed to have come over on the weekend JFK was killed, but that fell through because all programming was cancelled, from Thursday to Monday, after the funeral, and they were put off until the February appearances, when they were suddenly a much bigger thing. The Beatles didn't just come with a hot single, they brought almost two years of recordings, many of which were quite good, including that first album, Please Please Me. The band recorded it in 13 hours, with very few overdubs. If you want to know what the Beatles sounded like, live, PPM is as close as you're gonna get, and few bands can claim as accomplished a set as the Beatles could reel off, in 31 minutes, 59 seconds. Listen to any of their contemporaries' first albums: the Yardbirds, Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Rolling Stones, the Animals, the Searchers, Manfred Mann, et al. Those were just a few of the bands rising to the top in the intense competition for recording contracts and record sales, once the Beatles opened the door. Things would never be the same in the entertainment industry, again. New technology appeared, speaker designs, players, videos, the improvements in TVs (in 1964, most of America watched the Ed Sullivan Show on black and white TVs). Maybe they were just at the right place, at the right time, but the quantity, and quality, of their works says otherwise. Best of the Beatles 01 R E V O L V E R 02 A B B E Y R O A D 03 A H A R D D A Y ' S N I G H T 04 T H E B E A T L E S 05 R U B B E R S O U L 06 H E L P ! 07 P L E A S E , P L E A S E M E 08 B E A T L E S V I 09 M A G I C A L M Y S T E R Y T O U R 10 P A S T M A S T E R S V O L U M E O N E 11 P A S T M A S T E R S V O L U M E T W O 12 S G T P E P P E R ' S L O N E L Y H E A R T S C L U B B A N D 13 W I T H T H E B E A T L E S 14 L E T I T B E 15 T H E B E A T L E S F O R S A L E 16 Y E L L O W S U B M A R I N E (true Soundtrack)
