Many guitarists either don't understand, or cannot fully appreciate how John's choice of instrument, The Rickenbacker 325, strung with Pyramid flatwound strings, was SO instrumental (pun partially intended) in how the Beatles SOUNDED. The guitar had a short scale, a vibrato tailpiece, and was semi-hollow. It made for a short, almost banjo-like decay, which worked perfectly for John's oftentimes staccato and/or syncopated rhythm parts. In itself, it lent a pulse to the music. If you were to take a quick triplet rhythm e.g. "All My Loving", and play it on a Telecaster with regular roundwound strings, the individual notes would run over each other. John's Skiffle roots may have had a lot to do with this. Anyway, it's a HUGE factor. Nice work! 🙂

As a guitarist, I really appreciate Mike's easygoing enthusiasm when he shows these parts. Some YT instrumental lessons are pretty stiff, where the instructor dictates the notes and chords as they've been exactly memorized, but Mike seems to be really feeling out the music himself as he plays. It's like casually jamming with a friend, who just happens to have great equipment and who can play the tunes with perfect accuracy. Great fun, great job.

Mike have you researched about George's guitar teachers? I can't believe he was self taught. No KZitem like I have now. I'm playing so much better now than since I retired 30 years ago. Only had a terrific jazz guitar teacher then, and my ears to pick up the new releases. No one to show me
@MPfrance

Malcom - Believe it. For the most part George was self taught. He got a book called "Modern Guitar Chord Progressions" and figured out how to play mostly by himself by studying chord charts in the book. Later he and Paul - Paul was more musically inclined - learned together. Even traveling across town to have a guitar salesman show them a B7 chord. MANY great guitar players were self taught. Including (my all time fave and arguably the best ever) Wes Montgomery. And Wes didn't even begin until he was NINETEEN years old!! Wes learned by ear - copying Charlie Christian solos.

I too have been performing this song forever. I wasn't even conscious I was playing like John but when I picked up the guitar, yeah that's what I do (hitting the E string). Why doesn't the Rickenbacher stay in tune? Probably because of that tail piece, but couldn't you nail that down somehow? It's not like he used that whammy for anything or at least very infrequently. Thanks, man.
@marshall9875

I haven't had any tuning issues with my 325. I tune before I play and I play for about 1 hour at a time. The vibrato could replaced with the trapeze tailpiece if someone wanted. I never use the vibrato myself and I just leave the arm in the case.

The ONLY thing I would add to his instruction is this: If you are going play this song as a single acoustic performer (as I do), and you want the sound to ring truer, instead of playing the E7 at the 5th fret in it's normal configuration, lift your index finger off the 5th fret 2nd string and stretch it to the 4th fret 1st string to catch the G sharp. Try it, you'll see what I mean.

@@MPfrance Great point, and AWESOME lesson! Speaking of "live" variations, on that Swedish "Drop In" performance, and in one of the BCC performances of this song, it sounds like John almost doubles Paul's bass line at times - maybe to accommodate for George's amp being too quiet, or maybe just to keep it interesting for him? Just another example of how talented and versatile of a "rhythmer" John was.

Something I always find interesting when watching The Beatles play live, is how John Lennon's wrist is so efficient when playing the fast parts on his Rickenbacker. For instance, watch the video of this song played during Australia in 1964, when Jimmy Nichols was sitting in for Ringo. There are a lot of good close-up shots of John. Slow down the video using the controls on KZitem. He pivots at the wrist so fast and it's not broad strokes like Mike or even myself play on rhythm to achieve the same sound. He also does this on All my Loving, This Boy, and other challenging rhythm parts of the era. Extremely tight and a lot of precision to do this in a short stroke. He never looks like he's working hard to do all of the things that he is doing.

The “you know what I mean” line was covered in a bbc radio interview with John that I don’t have anymore (it was on cassette).
