I agree with you on "Past Masters": it should include mono when the singles were mono, and stereo when the singles were mono. I live for a remix of "Beatles for Sale". It's looking up that newbie fans are finding their way to the mono LPs over the stereo. They have the facts, the history, on the "stereo" wrong -- George Martin provides the facts in his book "All You Need is Ears" -- but hopefully they learn those facts.

Just out of curiosity, do you know what the average price was for a Beatles album in the U.K. in the mid 1960s? The first album I ever bought was the Capitol version of "Help!" I bought it in early 1968 and I believe I paid $2.39 for it. The label on the vinyl had the green apple on side one and the half apple on side two. It contained Help!, The Night Before, I Need You, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, Another Girl, You're Going To Lose That Girl and Ticket To Ride. The rest of the album was background music from the film including a terrible Indian sounding version of "A Hard Days Night" played on a sitar.

When you factor in the monetary conversion it's about the same but of course you guys were getting more Beatles product for your money. Sad news. Mark Lewisohn and many others have been tweeting about the death of prominent Brazilian Beatles fan and ‘Apple Scruff’ Lizzie Bravo aged 70. On February 4, 1968 Bravo and another teenage fan Gayleen Pease were invited inside Abbey Road studios and asked to provide backing vocals for the song ‘Across the Universe’. This original version appeared on a charity album supporting the World Wildlife Fund - No One's Gonna Change Our World - in December 1969. It can now be found on the second disc of the two volume Past Masters album, released in 1988.

I respectfully disagree regarding the Yellow Submarine tracks. I believe that the four unique YS tracks should have been included on the stereo Past Masters, and the Yellow Submarine album junked. Also, Day Tripper through to Rain should be included on Disc 1 giving a distinct 1962-1966 and 1968-1970 split. This means that Magical Mystery Tour sits comfortably in between covering the 1967 singles and EPs in true Past Masters fashion.
@7JANEWAY

I fully agree with you. One reason that they released the YS songs on an album was because they were on EP in the UK. EPs never sold as well as 45s or LPs in the US. They also did this for the same reason with Magical Mystery Tour, as one example. I can see these tracks being on both. These past masters were already released, so the YS songs would fit perfectly.

I’m honestly not really particular about the mixes. My version of Past Masters would have a different track listing. If the US Magical Mystery Tour album hadn’t been made cannon, the tracks from there would have been included. This is what my version would look like: Disc 1: 1. Love Me Do 2. From Me to You 3. Thank You Girl 4. She Loves You 5. I’ll Get You 6. I Want to Hold Your Hand 7. This Boy 8. I Want to Hold Your Hand (German version) 9. She Loves You (German version) 10. Long Tall Sally 11. I Call Your Name 12. Slow Down 13. Matchbox 14. I Feel Fine 15. She’s a Woman 16. Bad Boy 17. Yes It Is 18. I’m Down 19. Day Tripper 20. We Can Work It Out 21. Paperback Writer 22. Rain Disc 2: 1. Strawberry Fields Forever 2. Penny Lane 3. All You Need Is Love 4. Baby You’re a Rich Man 5. Hello, Goodbye 6. I Am the Walrus 7. Magical Mystery Tour 8. Your Mother Should Know 9. What really makes the original PM disjointed is how it goes straight from Rain to Lady Madonna (i.e. it doesn't include any singles from 1967) Strawberry Fields Forever never appeared in stereo in Britain until 1973's 1967-1970 "Blue" album. The Capitol MMT Lp included the very first stereo remix of SFF from 1967 but included fold-down mono mixes of the rest of Side Two. So I would add all the 1967 singles, A and B sides in mono. The mono version of Strawberry Fields Forever is so much more menacing than the stereo and it is how most people would remember that song. I'd also move Across The Universe to sit with Lady Madonna and The Inner Light as that is when it was recorded. I would also include the Yellow Submarine EP. And the last few singles from The Ballad of John and Yoko would appear in true stereo as that is how they were originally issued except You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) as that track was never originally remixed for stereo until 1995.

I'd quite like to see a second pairing of Past Masters compilations; one featuring their pre-EMI career, from My Bonnie to the Decca Tapes, possibly with the Hamburg recordings thrown in. The other could include the alternate mixes heard on The Beatles Box, plus the Yellow Submarine tracks, plus the now hard to find tracks from the Baby It's You, Free as a Bird and Real Love CD singles. There are even tracks where multiple Beatles are playing together, but that's probably pushing the format too far.

I would definitely have the 18 tracks first in mono then in stereo on my playlist, then you could add the authenticity and you could hear the songs Annie how much broader scope The only song that I would not have in mono is thank you girl simply because of the fact, that there is no harmonica parts being played in the middle and at the end of the song which I think gets its charm from that wonderful harmonica that’s from John Lennon especially at the end. I love Ringoes drum patterns at the end of the song they’re fantastic. I didn’t know the differences between the mono version in stereo version of paperback writer but when I heard the mono mix for the first time a few years ago I was blown away I love the mono mix of paperback writer and rain and going onto Revolution. and I absolutely love the fact that you have the German versions of she loves you and I want to hold your hand I would probably go for the mono versions of the songs but I think stereo is good too so it’s quite a tossup for me. and what is interesting is the mono version of them down has kind of a longer fade out which is nice and I loved yes it is that’s a great song and so is I feel fine with that feedback intro which is fantastic. One of the things I found out was that love me do there’s no master tape of the original single mix it might’ve been banned or something like that which is quite a shame. But I think they use the Canadian copy I’ll get cleaned up.

You said the Beatles singles were "issued" in mono and that makes it sound like they were just thrown out there in mono. Hi Lance - it is pretty widely known that the mono mixes are the ones supervised by the band themselves and that they often left the stereo ones to studio personnel because, in the early days, mono was what the overwhelming majority of folk listened in. Hi Richard, I don't think that's what I was saying here (certainly not what I was trying to say!). The only reason I am suggesting mixing mono and stereo is to reflect what was actually released, so the Mono Masters on its own is incomplete for the reasons you say, and the stereo Past Masters, whilst having all the right songs, doesn't contain the correct versions of the songs as was released as singles, so I'm suggesting a way to mix the two so that we get both the correct songs, and the correct versions on those songs, which by definition would have to be a mix of stereo and mono. 👍

Chronologically, Bad Boy should appear after Yes It Is, but I guess when they put the original compilation together they didn't want two rock 'n' roll tracks next to each other (the next song being I'm Down). There's also an argument for putting Across The Universe after Lady Madonna and The Inner Light as that was the era in which it was recorded, although that would mess with the authenticity angle as it wasn't originally released until late 1969.

1967 singles should be on there. They are missing a bit.. Anyway, maybe you could make your perfect "1" compilation or greatest hits compilation with about 27-30 songs.

really hoping for an eventual reissue of some sort - hopefully a definite one this time! currently starting to get into vinyl so I cannot comment on the 2009 remaster altogether, but I've got to say - listening to '09 stereo (sadly the only version available on e.g. spotify) on the headphones often hurts the ears (cue Gus Johnson's yt video called 'listening to the beatles with one headphone', shows the experience perfectly hahaha!)... thank you for the video!! PS I've got a small question/possibly a video request? you're often mentioning some non-album b-sides/rarities or films/documentaries that you've seen, and I have to admit I didn't know about a lot of them! are there any websites/resources helping with those, listing e.g. Paul's non-album original songs/contributions etc. or some good documentaries, or maybe you could recommend some and/or how to find such content! it's sometimes hard to comprehend all those years of music that largely came before I was even born :') cheers!

I'm not sure.of anything central that lists everything but when I was wantitto make sure I had all non album stuff I used jpgr.co.uk which is a great resource. For videos/documentaries I don't know where you'd start to look for a list of those but a good starting point would be the ones Paul made to accompany several of his albums, like Put It There (my favourite), From Rio to Liverpool, In The World Tonight, Movin' On, and The Paul McCartney Special (1986). A bit of googling might help you find them online hopefully!

Andrew, question. Do you separate Past Masters in your library into individual releases? So that you've got the Long Tall Sally EP as it's own release, Paperback Writer/Rain as it's own release, etc?
@AndrewDixonMusic
3 жыл бұрын
I do separate them yes, if you have a look at that iTunes playlist near the end of the video you'll see how each is tagged based on how it was originally released. That means I can sort/play their entire discography completely chronologically (same as I do for every artist in my library)

Great video. Agree with it all. Do you think they’ll continue the remixes of the earlier albums in 60th anniversary packages? I’ve been thinking of that a lot lately. I personally would like to just see it done by year “Beatles 1963” in 2023 and so forth. Include the remix of all the albums from that time period and demos, outtakes, unreleased BBC sessions and such. I’d also like to see an inclusion of the US albums in their correct mixes. Just a thought. The 1964 package would be massive however.
@AndrewDixonMusic
3 жыл бұрын
I think they're deliberately leaving the oldest albums until last until the technology to de mix them (before then remixing) is as good as it can be. I hope we get them all. Will be interesting to see if they package years together as you suggest, it's something I'd also wondered about.
@BeatleDustino

@@AndrewDixonMusic I’d be happy with individual releases too, but really want to see them redeem themselves on the US Albums box by giving us the correct mixes on those. Don’t want to see the US albums each done separately, but as part of a package of that year would be cool.

Sorry, Andrew, I really disagree with your premise for this video. But, it’s your channel! Lol I’d want ALL the versions because I’m not that biased for/against either mono and stereo. I’m curious where would you put the Yellow Submarine mono tracks, or would you even want them? You mentioned 🍏 may have put them there to attract more sales. That could be, but I don’t have a problem with that. They’re great songs. I will say, it wasn’t necessary to put mono versions on BOTH sets, since that defeats the purpose of two separate “Masters” albums.

OK. As everyone knows, the "Love Me Do" on Past Masters is actually a 'needle drop' of an incredibly clean 45 record, as the actual master was long ago wiped (erased). Is the 2009 "remaster" better audio than what we here in America got on the 1908 Capitol release "Rarities"?
@JamesBlood45

No rerelease of the single is as good as the original 45, even if the remaster is done from a needle drop. Idk about the Rarities version, but the 1980 "The Beatles Box" one sounds very good

I'd make some big and unpopular changes: the US MMT would be replaced by an album with the UK EP on side 1 and the YS EP on side 2 for a more British tracklist. Now for past masters: the mono version is the same except the 1967 singles are added, love me do is removed (Save it for the box set) and the YS songs are taken out. The stereo gets more complex: first 8 songs are the Sheridan ones from the Bear Family set, then it's all the stereo songs on Past Masters 1 but I Want To Hold Your Hand uses the 1963 stereo mix (Like This Boy does) and not the 66 remix. That remix is for the box set. It's the same until the 1967 singles where the 1966 stereo mix of Strawberry Fields Forever is used, and then the only other change is Get Back is taken off because it's on Glyn Johns' album and the 3 solo John singles are included as well (Wonderwall Music is too incorporated into the band catalogue). There you have it!

The Let it be song and the version that is on the Let it be album though, is so much better and much punchier than the single version.
