The Walrus remix on “Love” is far better than this new one. In fact, every remix on Love is better than the new ones. Compare the mixes of “Revolution” on Love and The new one. There’s no question. “Love” is hands down the superior mix.

I know Beatle fans love the thought of a 'Martin' having something to do with these remixes/Re masterings but from what I've heard most of it was done for the sake of doing it? Some songs ended up straight weird especially I Am The Walrus. I really do think that Giles is the wrong person for this incredibly important (if un necessary) job.

I would say the problem with the "I Am the Walrus" mix is that they added so much "new," previously unheard sound effects gimmickry that the original track is drowned over the last minute or so of the fade-out. The snatches of the BBC "King Lear" broadcast are part of the fabric of the song, and some of the most notable bits ("Oh, untimely death!") are now gone or nearly inaudible. Because EMI had only four-track machines, the song shifted into mono on "Sitting in an English garden..." when the radio recordings kick in, which was then panned between the speakers. It was never recorded in "true stereo" and never intended that way. The whole point was that it was otherworldly and anti-realistic. My favorite moment of the outro is when the "duophonic" tracks congeal in the center of the soundstage. It's magnificent! And it's not in the Giles Martin version, so I'll stick with the real thing from now on.

Great review. I just listened to it, and I can't believe it. They weakened a biting, stinging, satirical song, and a song that originally kept building to a frenzied psychedelic ending. Lennon's acid tongued biting vocal is lost in the mix, the King Lear radio play that they accidentally caught during the original mix is gone, etc. Most of the new mixes on both the red and blue are interesting because they brought out more of the music, you can hear things you never heard before, so they are worth the new mix. Walrus to me is destroyed. I'll stick to the original.

This new remix of I Am the Walrus reminds me of what Giles Martin did to Helter Skelter and She Said She Said; he completely took away their bite and power, and removed the edge that made them so compelling in the first place. As others have mentioned; thank god we still have the original, and far superior mixes done by his late father.

Exactly! I found that with the White Album. Some of the songs now seemed "limp" and without an edge. The White Album always had a lack of bass, but it goes to show that remixing something so it is theoretically sonically "balanced" does not necessarily make it better. Don't they ever think that because the songs were created with 1968 instruments and equipment, that it actually sounds better to try to honour the original mix and try to improve the clarity but keep the general sonic signature?
@errollzastre7380

The I Am the Walrus remix is interesting as an alternate mix, but I hope and pray when they finally remix the Magical Mystery Tour album that they reproduce the mix as we know it (but with the "veils" lifted and stereo all the way through to the end). But they need to mix the BBC King Lear in as was done on the original. Phrases such as "Oh untimely death" and "burry my body" are too iconic to mix out of existence.

They chose what they chose, because that's how they preferred for us to hear it, which is an artistic decision...their artistic decision. I liked the new 2023 mix until I heard the outro. This is one of my favorite Beatles songs and always will be but that odd section that they put in (I'd have to go back and find the time where it starts) just stood out like a sore thumb, and drowned out some critical parts, I was thinking WTF! The beginning of the fade dropped in volume too much. I'm really starting to tire of these re-mixes, I want the original songs remastered and re-mixed I don't want new parts thrown in. Expanding the Red/Blue albums was really a head scratcher; why put non-original songs on it and why expand it? A better idea would have been to redo the Anthology albums and put Now and Then out as a single and on the third installment of Anthology. Also, to call the box sets "box sets" is a bit of a joke as there is no: promo poster of the release and no book, nothing. My favorite Beatle album "Revolver" has no promo poster, bad quality control and no picture sleeve of the original "Paperback Writer/Rain". The Red and Blue release feels like a huge rush job with zero thought behind it. Universal/Disney is really ruining things and as with them are only out for the cash. Also, why make the cd/vinyl/colored vinyl "limited" there is absolutely no reason for it. The Discog/Ebay scam is in full swing and it is disgusting.

I have had no issues with most of the remixes that have come down the pipe since they started doing the deluxe albums, but I was really disappointed with this one. IMHO, this track and 'tomorrow never knows' both were greatly enhanced by the sub-standard mixing practices of the mid-60s. The jarring way they are panned to either the left or right really work in these songs in particular. Particularly with 'I am the walrus' I feel like there are bits missing in this new mix. Fortunately, the old mixes are still there for us to compare to ;)

This is an excellent, erudite and thoughtful commentary. For my own part, the original mono mixes of "I Am The Walrus" which appeared almost simultaneously on the B-side of "Hello Goodbye" and as part of the UK "Magical Mystery Tour" EP remain the definitive gold standard versions. I can think of few recordings which affected my perception of music so profoundly, especially when I could hear these recordings being played on an old-fashioned, valve-powered "radiogram". Hearing the sheer warmth and body of that sound is a completely different experience from listening to these modern stereo remixes which are primarily designed for people who generally listen to digitally produced music through earbuds. With this particular remix, it loses far more than it gains, particularly during the shambles of the fadeout. I hope and pray that this mix never gains recognition as the definitive version. At best, it's an interesting bonus track in which we can hear some of the components more clearly but it's not by any means a better overall sonic experience. Far from it.

There is a fabulous remix of IATW that no one ever seems to take notice of. If you listen to the mix on the anthology DVD, it is a true stereo mix from start to finish. In the original stereo mix half way through it goes to a fake stereo. In the anthology version it doesn't. It's great! The only problem was the very beginning and end was missing. Many years ago I took the stereo audio output from my DVD player and recorded it into my audio editing software. I then edited in the intro and the last 10 seconds or so from the MMT cd and I've had a glorious true stereo mix (except for the last few seconds) for years now. That is proof that it is possible to do a great remix and keep the integrity of the original version. That's what I was expecting now, not the mess we got!

The ending is ruined with more sounds going over the ending groove and the King Lear lines which made the fade out memorable plus the small embellishments were annoying. Just my take, though.

To me, hearing songs like Norwegian Wood and Paperback writer with a normal panning, a clean voice in the middle or a guitar riff near the center as it should be is a real real real joy. I also really like the new Walrus. It’s a top 5 Beatle song for me and I don’t think it sounds limp at all. I enjoy the extra bottom end and crispness of the vocals.

The whole remixing thing stems from the fact that the stereo mixes in the 60s had a lot to be desired. The mono versions are untouchable as that was what they were all working towards. In fact Geoff Emerick said you must always listen to pepper in mono as the stereo version misses out parts. So why were the original stereo mixes so bad? Well first up it was new technology and the 4 track mixers of Abbey road could not cope with stereo anyway. The general consensus says that the stereo mixes were just after thoughts and the beatles themselves had no involvement in them. However, that is not the whole story. George Martin in an interview said the stereo versions were done for the stereo players of the time, these were extremely expensive furniture like radio grams, of course mono ones were ubiquitous, but stereo were for the super rich. The speakers in these units were close together so George Martin said that for people to get a stereo effect, hard panning had to be made of the vocals and instruments. Of course with head phones and spaced speakers this can sound terrible. Wouldnt it be great if you could stream each ai split off track and do the mixing yourself?

With some of these remixes, it is a tough call. The original tracks were released with approval from the band. This is what they wanted their fans to hear. Having someone else remix them such that the there are very noticeable differences to old fans like myself does feel like a corruption. For example, why remix 'Revolution 9'? Love it or hate it, it was mixed the way John wanted it. It was an artistic statement as-is and now someone else comes along and reinterprets it? Removing the false start from 'I've Just A Face'? It feels like a corruption. But the music business is a business and must generate cash. With the Beatles there is always a ready audience.

I thought that most of the Walrus remix was fine. I liked the better definition of the various instruments. But the whole outro is problematic. In particular, they appear to have largely downplayed the radio part, especially the King Lear broadcast, with the fadeout ending with the "untimely death" line. And in its place there's this other stuff, which presumably was buried in there somewhere in the original, but which seems so out of place when it's out front.

Yes, I recently listened to it, and it seems there is no longer the rule of honouring the original intention when remixing/remastering but somehow having to make it "modern" and "current". I never listen to the Giles Martin version of the White Album, but to the 2009 remaster. There was something about the mix of the original album, it had kind of a harsh high end, which actually added to the uniqueness of the album. It might be argued from a purely sonic viewpoint that one should remix it to bring out the bass, etc, but I find it actually changes the feel of the tunes. I found the edginess of some of the songs (Happiness is a Warm Gun) was lost. It is a record of a certain point in time and the associated attitudes of the Beatles in 1968. Why does it have to be "modernized" to satisfy today's listeners. Sure, remix/remaster to clean things up a bit and optimize what is there, but don't change it to something else.

If the BBC didn't like the knickers reference its probably just as well that Paul (I think) howling "This shit's getting really weird" (at one minute and fifty six seconds) was discretely muffled.

"I Am the Walrus" has always been one of my favorite Beatles tracks, and I heard a lot of grumbling about this mix before I ever heard it… which may be why I was surprised by the fact that I don't find it objectionable. Having said that, I've been listening to the Dolby Atmos mix - I might feel differently about the stereo mix… but given the fact that both these albums were mixed in both formats, it's probably wise to state which mix someone is finding fault with (or alternately, finding to have particular merit!) In general, I've been finding Giles Martin's remasters revelatory, and at the end of the day, I think he's helping the Beatles be accessible to a new generation of listener who would find muddy mono mixes that were tailored for AM car radios and those slapdash stereo mixes with vocals in one speaker and instruments in the other to be jarring - if not unlistenable.

I love the new mix of walrus. But the best remix on the new blue album is Bulldog, hands down. Apart from the bass which is REALLY 300hz heavy, very boomy and muddy on lots of average speakers. You can tell many of these remixes are meant to sound best on headphones

Yeah, my first impression of the new mixes were that they’re very friendly to Paul’s bass. That’s not a bad thing, some of the early stuff buried the bass. Imagine if they ran the All My Loving bass through the console instead of what sounds like a room mic. That’s what the remixes sound like to me. Some better than others though.

Thanks for the information on the Walrus lyrics. I had no idea Lennon was referring to children’s sing along songs and Lewis Carrol. Now the song makes more sense to me. Elementary Penguin? I had no idea what he was referring to. Now I get it. Thanks for explaining the lyrics as to what he was referring to. Yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dogs eye. I always thought he’s painting an ugly picture in my head. And now I find out there was a nursery rhyme he was referring to? I had no clue. I always like to find out what the lyrics mean. Thanks for the explanation. 😊

2023 Walrus sucks balls. No two ways about it. However, I wouldn't doubt if Giles and Sam were left to their own devices instead of having it to run it by the bureaucracy of Fab Camp, we'd get more of a Wilson/Jaksyzk sounding touch to the catalog instead of the now-usual mixed bag. The only full stereo Walrus out there is on the Anthology DVD...which is not available in any other format. Yeah, Love has one also, but the end gets overshadowed by the fading in of girls screaming during their Beatlemania phase.

No problems with the vast majority of the new mixes, but the fade out on Walrus is a dogs dinner - the radio play now dominates to the detriment of the music, I cannot believe it was approved by McCartney and Starr.

Having heard this new 2023 version several times now, i find myself actually preffering it to the original. I think it's in keeping with the psychedelic era it sprung from & most certainly not been ruined as some are suggesting. The only track from the red & blue albums i was disappointed by was,"She loves You." But as i understand,Giles Martin was hindered by not having the original master tapes to work with. This is due to EMI somehow binning/erasing it in the 60s.

The fact that JL, on more than one occasion, said IATW was his favourite Beatles song of his own is enough for me to say Giles went too far here. It should have been a stereo mix to match the mono (with the adt vocal and drums dropping out here and there). The original stereo has a dry vocal and swiches to fake stereo from the mono halfway through which isn't too good. The 2009 remaster switches to real mono halfway through and is somehow worse! Anthology dvd has a good full remix as does Love but on both occasions the beginning and end are obscured. I made my own stereo mix years ago using stems, the stereo stings from Love, the King Lear dialogue and a tiny bit of the mono at the end. Still my go to mix.

There seems to be a bandwagon forming on You Tube with regard to I am the Walrus. Most don’t like what has been done to the track. Personally, it’s an improvement, as Oscar Wilde said , Comparisons are Odious. If you like another version, fine, no problem, but considering you have been listening to other “versions”for decades, and this one for days, let’s take a breath and see what you think when you have listened to the new version a thousand times.

I’m really impressed by this new mix, for me it’s a way of saying how close Lennon was to Revolution 9 at this point. And in a way for all the heralding of Yoko Ono as unleashing his avant garde side, it’s clear that he was well into the avant garde. The final breakdown into the radio broadcast now sounds like a nightmare, I really love it.

Thanks! I totally agree with your accessment of "Walrus." All I was expecting was the original to be cleaned up with the latest technology. All stereo with hi-def sound. This re-imagined mix just sounds schizophrenic at the end. You can't hear the haunting "Oh, untimely death" at the end of the song. They should have included both versions on this package.

Think the mix is ok for what it is. Maybe something that sounds more like a live version. Does sound a bit like a version I saw with the Beatles walrus video. But the 2023 doesn't fit the spirit of the Magical Mystery Tour album like the original. Dream like or trippy state as in Blue Jay Way or Flying. Think a great thing about the Beatles mid to late was that their album songs seemed to connect with each other. Giving the whole album a feel rather than just a bunch of tunes.

This points out the perils of remixing or reassembling the song after having everything surgically separated by new technology. Giles had remixed walrus for the Blu Ray release of MMT ten years ago and that sounded fantastic. Now having each sound separated introduces the possibility of messing it up as this one is.

I guess I'd be considered a "purist", but I feel remixes/remasters of such classic music should try to honour the sonic "flavor" of the original and just strive to clean up and sharpen the parts, but not change the overall character of the mix. If someone wants to make more radical changes, offer it as an alternative mix. But remember, this release is supposed to be "the" Red and Blue albums, not a new interpretation.

"Walrus" is the worst of the lot, but the remixes in general are pretty terrible. The lingering question is why...WHY do this??? In many cases the songs now sound small; "I Want You (She's So Heavy)," in particular, has been completely neutered of its hard edges. I really feel these remixes do a disservice to the original and revolutionary sounds George Martin was able to create all those years ago. "Walrus" and "Strawberry Fields" are probably the two most stunning examples of Martin's genius -- no one had heard anything like those records in 1967, and now they've been papered over for no good reason and sound puny; Martin's mixes sounded integrated, but the new versions allow the seams to show.

That is what i heard and read from various John Lennon interviews. He read that some fans started to break down his songs, one of which was In My Life and others, and he said i will write a song and lets see if they can figure this one out,so Walrus came along. You will find the same Lennon thought behind Day In The Life, although Maccas bit is pretty straight forward. It does get you thinking but in the end you give up,read about the stories behind the lyrics and just lay back and enjoy it,although those weird orchestral bits with the ending of the alarm clock does take its toll on my nervous system.

Well, this remix of 'I Am The Walrus' isn't what I expected, nor is it what I would have wanted. But, I think I understand why it is why it is, and I accept it. There's clearly a nod to the original stereo mix and what was really a deficiency, namely the switch from true stereo to simulated stereo at the 'English garden' point, due the the radio tuning effects being locked into the mono version. But while trying to be (somewhat) faithful to the flavour of that (unfortunate) characteristic, it has also tried to draw out more of the radio tuning feature than might have been possible originally due to the circumstances under which it was mixed in. Whatever choices could have made for this remix, there would always have been elements that some would consider unsatisfactory. Personally, I would have preferred it to be closer to the overall sound of the original mono version (but presented in stereo), but what looks like a decision to use the original stereo version as the model, while partially accepting its flaws and partially going beyond them, seems to have opened the door to what we've got.

NO! . . . My God, doesn't anyone out there grasp what happens when you draw the sound directly from the FIRST generation, multitrack tapes and remix in the state-of-the-art digital domain wherein there is no generation loss? THAT'S the reason to remix these albums. It's like lifting veils and revealing the music with far greater inner detailing.
