I deeply appreciate Broadcast's perfectionism and how Trish stressed the importance of editing. a medieval poet would have called it 'labor limae', polishing work. it was a rewarding approach, as I think that, among the holy trinity of British dream pop (Stereolab, Broadcast and Pram), Broadcast had the best songwriting.

Information on the two forthcoming demo albums... *Distant Call - Collected Demos 2000-2006* Release date: 28 September 2024 *Spell Blanket - Collected Demos 2006-2009.* Release date: 3 May 2024 _Distant Call is a collection of early demos that were worked into finished productions appearing on Haha Sound, Tender Buttons and The Future Crayon._ _The album also includes two songs discovered by James after Trish’s passing: “Come Back To Me” and “Please Call To Book” which was her response to Broadcast's 2006 ‘Let’s Write A Song’ project, where fans were asked to submit lyrics on a postcard which would then be worked into a finished song._ _Distant Call is a closing of the door on Broadcast and will be the last release from the band._ _Spell Blanket comprises songs and sketches drawn from Trish's extensive archive of 4-track tapes and MiniDiscs. The recordings lay the groundwork for what would have been Broadcast’s fifth album, offering a window into Trish and James’ creative process during the post-Tender Buttons period from 2006-2009._ _Photography used in its artwork is by Trish and James and the artwork is designed by Broadcast's long-time collaborator Julian House._ Both physical and digital albums are available for pre-order now. Information sourced from Broadcast's Bandcamp site and the Warp Records website, 30 March 2024.

My God, I was just singing a Broadcast tune and thought, "hey, I want to hear some Deerhunter". Imagine my surprise when Bradford's name popped up in this. I suppose it should not surprise me, but I nearly swallowed my tongue. I figured Stereolab might pop up, as the sounds are both so unmistakably parallel (yet definitively different). I commented once of Broadcast that, it was as if Stereolab and Melody's Echo Chamber made a beautiful, beautiful, baby. Great doc and thank you! On another note, I truly feel that Tender Buttons was Broadcasts apex album. It was complex and obtuse, but hauntingly beautiful in its angularity.

Trish Keenan’s death hit me way harder than I could have expected! I literally discovered Broadcast for myself walking past Emerson College and damn near beating down the radio stations door. I must have terrified the woman djaying as she tried to ignore me, but she finally cracked the door abd told me the name of the band. I bought The Noise Made By People the next day in early 2003, a few months later: Haha Sound. ❤️❤️❤️

Trish's passing absolutely stunned me, I was genuinely upset by it for 2 months. It was only a Laetitia Sadier/Andy Votel gig that threw me out of it - Laetitia and Trish were good friends, and Andy had known her well and posted a wonderful tribute to her, one of the best I'd seen. I gave Andy a note to thank him for his blogpost, that it just encompassed her so well, on the stairway of the club, before going for a smoke, and as I was finishing I could hear "Come On Let's Go" starting - I went up to Andy and thanked him. Great and rather cathartic moment. Good to see the footage at 12:34 there too, found that on Vimeo (auf Deutsch) and posted it on the forum many years ago (a friend on the forum made it into a KZitem vid). Trish is easily the most important person musically in my life, ever. I adore Astrud Gilberto, for example, but her passing (at 83?) was nowhere near as bad as I knew she'd had a good long life.

Thank you so much for posting this, this is their most coherent document on KZitem I have ever seen so far. I am glad you used some of the materials I filmed, too :). I started to listen to them when TNMBP came out, and even now their music means so much to me. It was almost accidental I filmed them in 2005: I had been testing my sony handycam for my first travel to Paris, I just put out it of the camera to see if it can actually capture the concert in darkness. When I came back to hotel and played back the tape, I was utterly surprised by the fact I captured such a miraculous moment. When I saw them in 2010, thanks to the moderator of the music festival, I finally managed to talk to them backstage. I spoke to James first, and I asked him if he felt the lefthandedness has some effects on his musicianship, as I was a lefty too. In his turn, he asked me if I liked their music more after they became a duo, then gave me an email to let them know when I uploaded movies on KZitem. Funny thing is that he told me he somehow liked my Japanese name I wrote on a stripped notebook paper, which would might have sounded strange. When I stood before Trish, I barely spoke out my gratitude to their music. I froze. She spoke back, and it was such a strange sensation that her voice I always used to hear on the music, was now speaking to me. She seemed to know the pieces I uploaded already and told me that she was looking forward to see this new one soon. My speech stumbled, but she playfully tapped on my camera, then said, "Ah, this part is a microphone", pointing to a windscreen, "and where is a lens?". Probably she realised that I was nervous but that I could talk on something I already knew about. I tried to continue, in a timid way, but it lasted only a minute or two. When I tried to step down the stage, I noticed she gestured with a small smile and I knew that I could shake hands with her. Her right hand felt a little warmer than mine, which was probably a bit icy from the unaccustomed coldness of climate. I came to the theatre on the very day I arrived in Italy, and it was the first time the land was covered with such snow there.

I first heard of BROADCAST, way back in March of 2000, when I saw their Music Video for "Papercuts". On MTV's 120 Minutes. I bought "The Noise Made By People". Immediately after seeing their video. I've been obsessed with the band and Trish Keenan since. And own all of their Albums. My favorite song by them is "Accidentals". However, when "Haha Sound" came out in 2003. The Japan Import CD, which I own, has a bonus track called "Stupido". Which is on the iTunes Version of "Future Crayon". Their version has an error glitch in one part of that song. Unlike the Japan CD which is Flawless. If anyone hasn't heard it. Here it is:. kzitem.info/news/bejne/u2quvW13aolml2k Great Documentary! Another film Trish mentioned aside from "VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS", was another film called "THE CRIMSON CULT". Which I own both of those on Blu-ray. R.I.P. Trish Keenan

It's really lovely to find this kind of tributes to all the little lights in the darkness that sometimes doesn't get the recognition that deserve. I will always find them deep and compromised whit the professionality, and even more of an inspiration to study English literature myself, because Trish encourage me to find more of the words that I wanted to hear, and giving the extension over diversity that art deserve. Ideas and matter changes but persist. This documentary it’s amazing and its perfectly done, attach all I expected from. Greetings from Mexico.

Incredible story. Thank you so much for sharing! **Story Time** So back in college in the mid 00's I met my roommates' dad who was a funk drummer in the 70's who went on to become a Grammy Award winning music producer. He was the realest person I've ever met; rarely gave anyone a second chance. When I first heard Broadcast, I think it was Accidentals, I was hooked immediately. Whenever he'd stop by I made it a point to show him a song or a band I was really into at the time. He came over one day and I put on "Before We Begin" to listen to because I knew he would really dig the drum sound. (Keep in mind, this dude is cynical and very critical of the overall production and will naturally point out everything he dislikes and how we would approach it.) He's listening to the track and is aware at what they were going for, he kept quiet the entire time and just nodded his head throughout the entire song. He tragically passed away unexpectedly not that long after but that moment we shared meant so much to me and will be forever suspended in time.

Just to pad out the info a bit - I think Trish spent time as an older child (with her mother, Zena, and four brothers and sisters) in one of the tower blocks that ran along Bromford Drive just south of the M6 (I'm pretty sure that's where some of the early photos in your superb documentary were taken). Some of them have since been demolished, which is I assume what her lyrics referred to in Michael A Grammar. The same song references Chelmsley Wood, a housing estate a couple of miles to the south east where I understand her father, Francis, lived, and she would've obviously bounced back and forth to both during her childhood. Trish's catering background came from working in a chip shop called the Sea Queen, in Castle Bromwich, probably around 85-87, after which she moved to Moseley/King's Heath and became involved in the gig circuit there as a vocalist (mainly folk stuff to start with). I think Zena very sadly passed away about a year after her wonderful daughter.

Toro y moi? How does one equate that sound to Broadcast? I enjoyed this Mini documentary but was constantly astounded by the comparisons made to other groups/artists. Broadcast stand apart from all of that music industry noise, Broadcast were an art project, and when they were in the midst of their career, it seemed that very few people outside of their local scene really cared.. especially in the U S.. But now, years later they are gushed over as they should have been from the start. What is referred to as their strangest moments are for me, and i suppose other deeply involved fans, their finest hours. I am glad they are popular now, but at the same time it is frustrating that Trish will never enjoy that popularity on the scale that now is afforded thier music and i predict will multiply as the years roll forward.. Art in sound+vision like this come along rarely and then seems, before you know it, becomes an echo.. Thanks for making this documentary.

I think it’s worth noting however that the Dadaist cut-up method you mention around minute 35-36 was largely popularized by Genesis P-Orridge who implented that and much much more. Quite useful if you’re interested in a dogmatic free approach to the occult world.

Hey Sets and the CD, I'm sure you're aware of the announcement on Trish's birthday of Spell Blanket, an album comprising Trish's demos between 06 and 08 which would've made up what I assume would be most if not all of the final album, out at some point next year on Warp. I can't wait to hear it - what are your thoughts on this? I know it's essentially closing the book on her wonderful career, and it's obvious now that James really didn't want to continue and finish it without her input which is utterly understandable. He referenced years ago how difficult it was even listening to her demos. I hope he's doing well, he deserves abundant praise for his work - it's hard to say "well Trish did this and James did that", I think it was their mutual love and understanding that made them so fantastic.

The KLF were not on Warp Records. They released under their own imprint, KLF Communications, with licensees abroad (TVT/WaxTrax/Arista in the USA/CAN, Indisc in Europe, ToCo for Asia/South America, etc.) Also while Broadcast's sound was far from the bleep techno and idm/braindance/armchair techno that the label made it's name with a decade earlier, by the turn of the century their stable held acts like Jimi Tenor, Boards Of Canada, Stereolab, Vincent Gallo, who were likeminded contemporaries and later additions like Gravenhurst, Bibio, Savath & Savalas, Home Video, wouldn't have found a home on Warp had it not been for Broadcast helping to expand their audience (as well as the existing fan base's tastes).
