The beauty community tends to roast neutral palettes when in reality, that's what most regular people use on the daily basis. Also... This is a thing I've noticed being outside of the US, I think the beauty community on YT has an American view of things and some brands that are considered "boring" or "outdated" for americans, are the most popular thing in other countries. Like everyone on YT thinks MAC and Too Faced are dying while those brands are considered the best makeup in my country.

Okay so I’m an ULTA ba and potentially lead cashier soon (fingers crossed) but basically I’m the one at my store who is up at the register the most i love being up there but basically i see most of what people buy in my store we aren’t a crazy big store but still a decent size one but some points i have to say at least I’ve noticed at my location 1. Bare minerals is go to for anyone with sensitive skin (also their tinted moisturizer is bomb not a fan of the powers but every one and their mother loves them so we sell a TON of them) 2. At my store personally anytime someone is looking for a good foundation we typically will go to one of these three: it cc cream, Lancôme (it’s so good honestly worth every penny), or nars ones it really depends on the pba or ba that helps you 3. I don’t sell as many too faced palettes or tarte in my location at least i mean I’ll sell one or two a day but nothing crazy 4. 1000% our most popular mass eyeshadow is anything morphe or colourpop 5. Out most popular mascara as of late has bounced around a lot (but whenever someone asks me for my recommendation I typically will go to benefit roller lash or Lancôme monsieur big or hypnuse drama) A lot of people haven’t been as into the better than sex mascara and I found have been favoring a more full look but is far more natural look that doesn’t come out as clumpy 6. At my location benefit brow products and Anastasia Beverly Hills brow products for about tied for popularity I want to say (i like both but have found myself reach for the benefit one in my stash more) 7. Our most popular skin care is 100% the ordinary and cerave (most transactions are ring that are buying skin care typically have the cerave cleanser and then a couple items from the ordinary) 8. Grande lash depending upon your location can be a top seller (for mine i get everyoneeeee on it because I’ve been using it since Christmas and it really does work so i get a lot of people to buy the trial size kit) 9. Also 9/10 if you come in and are going to pick up a setting powder it’s more than likely going to be the Laura Mercier one 10. ALSO please if you have questions or need help ask us we all have our favorites and love to help out other people onto them and see how they love them (if we seem busy we might not be able to be with you the whole time but will do our best to help you and check in on you when we get the chance) 11. This I feel like just has to mentioned but please don’t be mean to us we are doing our best and most locations are trying their best to hire and if your rude to use it doesn’t make us a better worker it just makes us have a worse day so please be nice to all retail workers and food workers (also I’m sorry if the coupon doesn’t work i know believe me it bugs me too but i have no control over it)

Yep, been using Bare Minerals for ~15yrs and now I'm in my mid-30s. My friend from HS and her sister also use it and not bc of anything I said. BM prob doesn't have to waste $$ advertising bc they have such a loyal customer base, lol. It's a great foundation. - It's ingredients are good for sensitive skin and thus for basically all skin types. - No weird binder chemicals on ur face - melts into ur skin w ur natural oils. If u fall asleep in it, you don't feel bad. - Extremely lightweight - it is hard to go back to liquid foundations after feeling so free, plus all the other benefits. For the weight on the skin, the coverage is amazing. However, it maxes out at medium coverage. - You can spot conceal really well w a lighter shade and a pencil brush. - Bc it's a dry product, you don't have to worry much about bacteria growth or shelf life compared to liquid foundations. This is great for someone like me who tans easily and needs cycles thru 5 shades throughout the yr. I got more into colorful eyeshadows bc of YT and the pandemic (nothing else to do), so I'll play and try out lots of eyeshadows, but I'm not messing w my foundation. I am also a CeraVe cleanser and lotion fan.

While I consume a lot of content on YT I only own two palettes and I see where a lack of creativity lies in new releases but I feel less bored with new releases because I still have so much room in my collection. Every time I go to Ulta most of the Colourpop and Morphe palettes are sold out - always!! Also I would consider myself the “average consumer” who works in a professional setting. I choose palettes based on if I can use it to get a “professional” look. Loud, bright colors are pretty frowned upon. So that “different, unique color story” that beauty KZitemrs tout as desirable generally doesn’t work for a huge percentage of the makeup market. my theory: beauty influencers own lots of palettes & keep up with every new release so it jades them the average consumer owns maybe a handful so things are more fresh to them theory 2 also average consumers may think morphe is fine bc they don't know it can be better but also...store placement. BH is right there in the same store (which imo has excellent eyeshadows) but their products are tucked away to an end cap where morphe gets a whole aisle and also highlight stands (idk what they're really called; the mini stands in the middle of the main walkway with like 3-5 products from one brand showcasing new releases) so of course more people are going to see morphe

This so much. I’ve taken great care of my skin, so I don’t look my age, but glittery and bright colors just look wrong on my eyelids now. Plus, I did all that back in the 80s, along with the nail art-it’s old news to me, lol. Give me a neutral eye, red lip, and nude French nails and I’m happy. Love you and your videos Kelly! Here's the thing with new exciting colorful palettes. Most of us in daily life wear neutrals, or neutrals with a pop of color for everyday wear. I am also a neutral girl. I say to each their own. It only bothers me when the beauty community constantly roasts neutral palettes as boring, and then do a review on a really colorful palette and when they are done, say that they have to go wash their wash face being they are going out shopping or running errands. So if you want to wear color, wear it, but stop complaining about neutral palettes if that is what you also wear out in public. Where I live, I probably wear more pops of color than most people, and the younger girls only seem to wear very subtle makeup. Again, I love you Kelly and your eye looks, you make very beautiful looks, even your colorful looks are very soft and beautiful. So I say to everyone, wear what makes you feel good.

Bareminerals palettes are my favourites. They have a nice ratio of matte/satin colours, are easy to apply, not too shimmery, great texture, and no fallout (which is my biggest issue with those ColourPop palettes). I am an average user, and I have no time to fuss over which colour to choose, so mono shades and trios/quads are always my go to choices.

I think the problem is that the beauty community kind of forgets that the average consumer doesn’t hop on every release. I VERY infrequently buy new eyeshadow palettes, and practically all of my makeup repurchases occur if I run out or if it’s my birthday/Christmas. And beauty is one of my interests! “You already have this” and “this is so boring” as well as “They’ve already done this” are phrases I always hear. It’s a common complaint with colourpop. But since I buy eyeshadow so infrequently, I love that I have so many choices and I can pick *just* the right tones when the time does come to pick a palette. Same with when I needed a neutral palette for performance choir-since there’s “too many neutrals” I was able to find one with the right tones within my budget.

You can do a quick, fairly foolproof eye plus a “your lips but better” lip color and a dash of blush and look polished and professional for most workplaces, and it’s quick and easy when you’re trying to get the whole family out the door of a morning. For a special occasion or date you can intensify the eye a bit, or leave it alone and do a strong lip. I like the neutrals because I love a vintage look with a red lip. I think the Bratz collection is popular with teens and tweens. The bright colors and the collab would be really popular with younger kids. Also a lot of the most popular palettes are ones that us average consumers feel we can use to look pretty. I've looked at some of the bolder more interesting(in the eyes of the beauty space) palettes and know that putting together a pretty look is going to be a challenge which is cool when you do make up for a living either as an influencer or as an artist. I personally don't have time in my day for an expensive challenging palette.

A point that was not mentioned that I believe is an important want is the age of consumers. Many of the bigger KZitemr tend to be younger women (20s- 30s) and may be more attracted to bold colors and looks. However, mature women may feel less confident or not interested in wearing bold looks preferring the classic more neutral looks instead. This age group of women don’t have a big space in the KZitem world, we don’t hear this perspective but can guess what it is based on these top sellers.

YES! I'm in my mid-40s and do like color (mostly grungy shades which can go a bit more neutral), but I spend a lot of time now researching formulas - avoiding things with too much glitter, too much fallout, anything that accentuates lid texture. It takes time, which is good for my low-buy, but most people won't bother and pick up something familiar. Those Bare Minerals quads are super pretty, even if they're not avant-garde!

One factor besides name recognition that could play a huge factor is having consistency with certain brands. There are so many limited edition, fast rotating products out there. We cycle through trends so quickly. Brands like Too Faced, Urban Decay, Morphe, and Bare Minerals tend to consistently keep products on the shelf for years so average consumers can develop staple items and know the products are good. I know I hate it when I like a new product and it gets discontinued quickly. Not every consumer loves to experiment.

Couple of points I'd like to make, which seem to be opposite of a lot of folks here: 1. I wonder how much expenditure wise breaks down from Avg. Consumer vs YT or other social media followers, because an avg consumer might just buy 1-2 palettes a year vs Social Media beauty consumer who might buy a lot more. Maybe that is why brands might release 1 or 2 neutral palettes to appease general masses but have more interesting and innovative releases too. 2. This might be correlation vs causation, but I feel that formulas for most products improved greatly since YT and other social media took off. Not to mention the support for indie brands, who brought us innovative formulas. 3. When I was an avg makeup consumer, I loved colorful shadow and still do. My 1st palette was UD Book of Shadows. I had a few colorful eyeshadow palettes and UD Naked as my work palette. So unfortunately, the avg consumer trends never appealed to me. I remember also struggling to make eyeshadows work on my deep toned eyelids, which is why I decluttered palettes like Naked 3 and the like quickly. I'm grateful for beauty community to not only acknowledging and "normalizing" colorful eyeshadow but also for demanding better pigmentation for deep skin folks. The main reason I started watching beauty YT was to learn tricks to make light ashy shades, that used to comprise half of palettes in the past, work for me. I ended up being introduced to brands where I did not have to do that anymore. 4. I know a lot of people have to wear neutral looks for work but I hope that trend is changing. One of the reasons I was able to practice and get better at colorful looks was in the last few years, most of my workplaces allowed people to wear whatever type of makeup, hair style and display tattoos in an effort to "attract millenial workforce". So, I no longer have "that one neutral palette for work". 5. I agree that bashing neutral palettes in not correct, people should just say not for me and move on. But since a lot people here mention that "Avg consumers don't watch YT", I don't think those folks will even know or care about beauty YT or social media opinions.

I worked at Sephora for 3+ years, and Bare Minerals always did well! Also we constantly had to explain to people that we did not carry Shape Tape 😂

I bought the Naked 1 just as it was being discontinued, and held onto it for months before opening it. I freaking love that thing. Darkhorse is my absolute favorite shadow forever!

I own the mini Naked 3. I enjoy it. The Too Faced Naturals and the Tarte Juicy are on my wishlist, I loved them the second I saw their release. 😬😄

I think one thing to consider is the average age of youtubers and KZitem audience vs average consumers. 30+ typically look for softer, more neutral colors - career looks if you will. High shine, glitter, bold colors, and extreme pigmentation are not appealing to me as a 36 year old who is wearing makeup primarily to work in an office. I have a couple colorful palettes for date night or whatever but the rest are midtone neutrals because they require little thought or effort to make look nice. The very things that make a product boring on KZitem is usually what I'm looking for.

I'm a bit behind the times with this video (just watched it for the first time) but I view the makeup community similar to the art community or performing arts community. Everyone can appreciate it, but it's a subjective experience and most of the time it depends on how exposed and/or trained you are in that field. EX: I'm a trained music person. I understand a great deal of how music is made, where it has come from, and why it sounds different in different parts of the world. I have my preferences, and when I discuss it with other people who have the same training I have, sure we "roast" music we don't like or music we don't think took much expertise to put together. We also have our specific likes and dislikes, music we always tend to listen to and some guilty pleasures. I think this translates well across to makeup. Another part of this is the shear volume of what's available in each community (songs, art pieces, performances, makeup brands and products). You literally could never hear all the music there is available. Same with art, same with performance art. And absolutely the same with makeup. As an early consumer (and my early days were before the awesomeness of YT and people literally teaching what the products are and how to apply them), it is extremely overwhelming how many types of products (makeup, skin care, tools), let alone brands that make them. Even simply going into a drugstore and looking at the little bit of makeup they have still usually involves 5-10 different brands. So the learning curve is HUGE. Even once you have a basic understanding of types of products, you don't know what you'll like or have an easy time working with until you try it. So then cost becomes a big part of decision making, can I afford to buy something that I won't like? Can I afford Ulta or Sephora brands over drugstore brands? If I can afford something more expensive, how in the world (outside of knowing someone very knowledgeable in makeup or watching a lot of beauty YT videos) would I know one brand is better with eye products while another brand is better at foundation, etc? Someone else stated another key point to all of this...what purpose am I buying makeup for? Work, fun, date night? That doesn't even begin to cover adding indie brands into the mix. Or the products you can purchase simply by looking at what other countries offer. All of these will influence a person on what to buy. So, while I greatly value your opinion and knowledge, I think looking at best sellers lists from only two companies doesn't give you a good view into what people buy or give you any understanding of WHY they buy what they buy. I think you're trying to put way too much importance on such a small or narrow indicator. I think this is a very interesting topic and would love to see a more in-depth discussion over it. If you've made it this far, thanks for reading :)

I actually kinda like the mini 3. I can't believe Tarte just took some of the same colors from that larger palette to make the new juicy palette.

When I worked on a collection counter for a department store every order that summer had Urban Decay Naked Heat. And Christmas was all of the benefit gift sets. People like familiarity
