The state nursery (MD) offered native ninebarks. I bought 25 to make a “ hedgerow “ for one of my pastures. Have 3 Diablos around my small garden pond. Great plants!

Thank you for this video. It was very informative! Later edit... Partially due to your video, I have bought a ginger wine nine bark that should be orange in both the spring and the fall and I've planted it in a spot where it should have plenty of room. I plan to put some sort of blue conifer there next to it. I was impressed by your comment about the color combination of the orange next to the blue evergreen. I wish more videos would include this type of information.

Very informative. The peeling bark reminds me of my Seven Son Flower tree (heptacodium), and the amber jubilee growth habit / branching reminds me of the smokebush. That Little Devil is really fabulous.

Just planted some Amber Jubilee Ninebark about two weeks ago. They were looking good yesterday. Today I went out and the tips were all drooping (not wilting). I had given them liquid miracle grow two days ago. When I went to look at them closer I could see where deer had nibbled some of the leaves off. I gave them a good watering and within the hour most of the tips had perked right up. I also bought several bars of Irish Spring soap, cut them up in smaller pieces, put them in small dishes and placed them around the bushes.

@@gardenwiseadventures Me too. I was told this by an octogenarian that they used to hang IS from mesh bags on the gravestones to keep the deer from eating the flowers they put on the grave.

I didn’t prune mine correctly over the years, I sheared it like a hedge so it just became a thicket of branches in there allowing a lot of powdery mildew because of no air flow. So I just hard pruned (rejuvenated) it down to the ground. Hoping it comes back so I can prune it correctly.

My little devil seems to get some winter kill (maybe from the wind?) on some of the thinner, wispy outside branches. It's not a big deal but takes some effort to prune out. Any advice/observations? I'm in the northeast in 5-b. Very jealous of yours which looks great - awesome, bold colors!

Try cutting it to the ground next spring. It will give it a chance to grow back with fresh branches. I will be doing the same because I had the same issue as you. It didn't die back at all, it just isn't as pretty this year

Thise are so gorgeous! I am glad you have one. Definately make sure it gets full sun and water it deeply once a week. They really don't like to be over watered. Give it enough room to grow full sized and only prune it from the base when needed.

Hello! Great video thank you! I just purchased 3 of Monrovia’s Petite Plum Ninebark which were on sale at my local nursery. Are you familiar with that one? I want to place them where they can grow and I will not have to prune them. I can either plant them in a group against the side of my home (in between 4 Japanese sky pencils) or place them as specimens throughout my landscape. What are your thoughts?
@gardenwiseadventures

Thank you for watching my videos! The Petite Plum Ninebark is really pretty! It really depends on your climate. Ni ebark do better with a lot of airflow and full sun. They can be susceptible to powdery mildew if they are in an area that is partially shaded and is humid. Against your home cod be pretty if they can get the right conditions.

i have acquired a ninebark at the house we moved to. It seems to have a case of powdery mildew. some leaves are coated in white powder and other leaves are black and curled up. I live in zone 5A. should I cut the entire shrub to the ground or selectively prune off damaged branches and give it a treatment of sulfer?
@gardenwiseadventures
4 жыл бұрын
I would do thinning cuts so the shrub can get better air flow. If you live in a more humid climate, then it may not be the best shrub for your area.

Mine does as well...may depend on humidity levels in a specific season. I applied fungicide which took care of it.

Will this kind of pruning prevent the shrub from flowering in the following year? I have several healthy dart's gold ninebark who's size I would like to control but I also want to preserve the flowering.

Ninebark flowers on old wood, so if you want to preserve the buds for next year, prune it right after it finishes blooming.

Ninebark are subject to powdery mildew in more humid climates. Some things you can do are to make sure you have good airflow around the branches. Clean the area out so it is more open. You can also talk to your local nursery and see if they have suggestions for your area.

🤣🤣 You should be fine. You can go in and fins outward facing branches on the stems you cut and recut them to there. You can also go in next year and cut any branches you don't like to the ground. It's all a fun learning process.
