Sometimes, simplicity is all you need. This version of the Free Living Caddis, known as the Rhyacophila Caddis, is tied to be simple and effective. It is a great fly that consistently catches fish and, from a tying perspective, is an excellent pattern to start tying your first nymphs.
The key characteristic of this fly lies in its profile: slim and straightforward. Each beginner learns to add the right amount of dubbing. Too much dubbing results in a bulky fly that looks nothing like the insect we aim to imitate. Too little, and the fish won’t take it. Start with this fly, and if you tie it correctly, you’ll catch plenty of trout.
