St Martin's Church in Little Waltham holds a ring of six bells. The tenor was cast in 1821 by William Dobson, the fifth in 1634 by Miles I Graye, the fourth in 1749 by Thomas Gardiner, the third in 1657 by John Hodson, the second in 1632 by Miles I Graye (two years earlier than the fifth, making it the oldest bell in the peal) and the treble in 1935 by Alfred Bowell. All six bells are hung in an ancient oak frame from c1499. The frame is listed for preservation protection.
In addition to the six bells of the change ringing peal there is a clock bell, that is hung in the cupola on the top of the tower. The clock bells has a diameter of 12.50'', weighs half a hundredweight, and is by an unidentified founder. During the external recording of the bells, you can hear it striking the hour. Ringing here is unique as two of the bells are rung from a foot above the other ringers!
Recorded during our autumn tour of Essex in 2023.
