The reason for the fireball is because the 22 WMR was initially designed for a 17 inch rifle barrel, so the powder is going out the end of the pistol barrel while it is still burning. The pressure for the WMR and 22LR are exactly the same at 24,000 psi. I've got the 3 22 Mags in the safe (revolver, semi pistol, semi rifle) Looks like I might soon have another. - Also need to get a lever gun in 22 wmr.

It would be interesting to know what the actual velocity is coming out of that handgun. The listed velocity is assuming a longer barrel like you would get from a riffle. @davidmack4185 Yeah, I'm having a bit of a hard time believing him, but will give the benefit of the doubt because internet. Rimfire in general is likely to malf sooner or later due in no part to the gun, at the very least. I have two Kel-Tecs- KSG and RDB. The former is picky with shell brands/types and the latter ran 2k rounds flawlessly until the hammer snapped. I like Kel-Tec, but don't trust their guns one fat smidge. I've heard the same negative thing you said about the old Walther PP series- expensive and not always reliable, but they sure look cool! I don't have one, but do have some cheap Hungarian clones of it- Two PA63s in 9x18 and one in 380. After Wolff Spring ugrades to them, none have failed. For a 22WMR pistol, I recommend shooting Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 40 gr JHP. It is actually designed for the shorter barrel. You get less fireball because it burns off in the barrel. When shooting a pistol with ammo designed for a rifle, you get a lot less velocity and a much bigger fireball.

.22wmr has the same pressure as the .22LR. But uses a slower powder. Since the case is very long, this creates problems in blowbacks. Tapping gas from such a low pressure usually don't work well either, since it tends to get dirty fast. At least that is my understanding of this.

It is a bit tricky to do the Mcarbo kit but the video is very good. Mine didn’t run at first but the screws were too tight- and I really didn’t think I over tightened them.

I jave a question! I just picked up my S&W 22 mag and it shoots awesome. My question is whats keeping Smith and Wesson from machining an exchangeable barrel for 17HMR like springfield does with rhe 9mm and .40 cal?

I was curious about this pistol. I have a Walther WMP .22 Mag and love it!

I'm in love with my Walther WMP as well. 15 Round mag limit is fine considering some States like Colorado have a 15 rd mag limit, so don't see me buying a S&W to take back to Colorado when I visit my family there.

As with my RUGER Single Six using .22 WRM it is a LOUD cartridge - and yeah, it has a DEFINITE muzzle flame. But my Smih & Wesson M&P .22 mag pistol, in 250 rounds, and has never had a stoppage of failure to fire. I like it for its accuracy, especially with most 40 grain cartridges. Also the recoil is very light.

Smith and Wesson, if you're watching, be nice when you come out with a fine pistol like this, to offer it in Aluminum, and Polymer versions; I'm meta l pistol buyer.

327 federal magnum. Would love if S&W would take this 5.7/22 mag tempo barrel platform and chamber in 327 federal with an auxiliary recoil spring for 32 S&W long.

I'm liking this new SW platform. Undecided on 5.7 vs. 22wmr. But seems like a good tool have in the box. As far as the reliability, since SW sent you that gun, it's likely a cherry picked individual - so it would be strange if it was a jamomatic. Eitherway the concept is cool. Maybe add a threaded barrel and flash hider.

I really don’t understand why so many people lead with the caveat if you have something wrong with you that keeps you from firing a full sized firearm use this instead. Honestly given how flat shooting this caliber is and the capacity I wish more people would carry it even those that are able-bodied.

PMR-30 cant hold up to that. You'll never get through two 30 round magazines without a jam or failure to feed/eject. Nice review. Hope I can get one someday

As long as Smith & Wesson has been in business, you would hope they could be more creative ! Instead, they chose to pretty much make a Kel-Tec clone ! Shameful ! Typical Fireball generator ! Gotta believe the Walther is going to come out on Top !

**Well the Kel-Tec is a bargain priced, inexpensively made handgun, for what about half the price. **So comparing them really isn't that fair. (Kind of like comparing a Glock with a Hi-Point) **But after this Smith, is the Walther gonna get any love at all?? It's heavier, it cost more (maybe not a lot) and it's got half the round capacity. **I wish Kel-Tec would take their CP33 pistol redesign it for 22 mag and give us about a 10" barrel on it. **I also wish they'd take that stupid magazine release off the heel or make the grip just a little bit longer, as my bear paws, if I'm not careful I activate the magazine release when I grip it, **Walther should have taken their P22 design with a 5" barrel and rechambered that for 22 mag. That's small gun with a 15-round magazine, would have been the ultimate bug out bag/get home bag/survival gun. **But a full-sized, heavy gun, in 22 mag that's got half the rounds of the Kel-Tec or the Smith?? I think they shot themselves in the foot on that one.

The point of a comparison is to compare things that arent identical, so comparing this to a keltec, or a glock to a hi-point, is entirely valid and could really only be argued against by people with a vested interest in the outcome.
@kirkchartier7141

@@ALovelyBunchOfDragonballz well I guess according to you, it is valid. **But to me comparing a gorilla to a beauty queen just doesn't hold much attraction for me. And I won't need to watch it. **But of course I'm not in the market for any of these pistols with a sub 10 inch barrel.

Plinkster! Nice review. Good job on your success. I would love to get one of these .22mag's I would like something a little more compact as a backup. Is there a compact version of this s&w?
