welcome Seirra, first time I've seen you here 😊 You are "ready" when you have (1) a strong reason for learning French and (2) you know your daily learning plan to follow. Without these 2 things, you will likely find it difficult to achieve your goals in French (whatever they may be). So, if you have been trying to learn French for a while now and you haven't been making much progress, you would simply need to start learning French a different way. Some of my students also had tried learning French in the past but didn't make any real progress. So for that reason they decided to partner up with me to ensure they make progress and actually achieve their goals. How is French learning going for you? What problems are you facing?

I ended up taking a traditional German course, but used Assimil German initially (still can't order a glass of water in German 30 years afterwards, but I can get a beer.) As I recall - half way though the German version it says "go back and re-read/re-do the chapters one through a 100" . Does itl do this in French, or all the languages they offer? Did you do this, or do you have your students do this? Or do you just have them plow through. I am thinking I want to do the The Camino Frances route - next year or so - but I am realizing that I need to brush up more on my Spanish, as France (apparently) is not the longest part of journey, though it would be good to be there for a few days to 'settle in' because of Jet Lag, do the Camino, and perhaps return to France/Germany for a week before returning back home. I do enjoy a lot of foreign movies, always with subtitles ( sadly, do not watch a lot Spanish/Italian movies.) I find it 'nice'' not to look have to look down at the subtitles though on some of the short sentences. Note: On many movies UK shows, I have to have the subtitles on just to follow the show, English itself has many dialects and expressions which, I miss completely, especially if I am watching a historical/period based show. The show Peaky Blinders, I had to have the subtitles on 60 percent of the time, and even asked google what things meant.

interesting stuff! thanks for sharing. the Assimil book does say you should go back and repeat lesson 1, once you hit lesson 50. I help my students use the book in a different way. Whenever they are struggling with a lesson, and they say are having trouble with the difficulty of the French conversation, we pause, and for the next 7 days, go back and repeat the previous lessons. For example, one of my students was finding lessons in the 30s difficult. I said no problem, let's repeat lessons 20,21,22,23,24,25, 26 for the next 7 days. Then he goes back into the 30s to complete them with a stronger knowledge base (as he has re-inforced what he previously learned in those earlier lessons to use in the newer lessons). What are your plans with language learning, do you want to learn Spanish next? Rory.

Is the Assimil With Ease enough or would you recommend including 'Assimil Using French' too? I am asking because I have both and I wanted to know if that will be an overkill.

good question Moses. Assimil "Using French" is the more advanced version of "With Ease". "Using French" you should use once you hit High Beginner/Intermediate level. If you tried using it while you are at Beginner, it may be a bit too hard. Once you hit chapter 80-100 of "with Ease", you could then probably handle "Using French". Me personally, you don't really need "Using French", "with Ease" is good enough to get you to Intermediate level.

if anyone would like to work 1-on-1 with me, yes of course it requires a financial commitment. but I encourage everyone to go out and try to learn French by themselves first. If they can succeed based on my advice and experience with my current students, then that's terrific! But, just for your knowledge as well man, every single one of my students I'm helping have all tried learning French before. They haven't seen real progress and that's why they have decided to team up with me.
