STEP ONE: Go to Salvation Army or Goodwill and buy a used receiver. Wait until you find a good one at a good price. You can find an old Kenwood or Yamaha for $15 sometimes... Wednesday is half price. STEP 2: If you're lucky you can also find good speakers there. I got some Infinity Reference 6.5" bookshelf speakers to go with my used receiver. I think I paid $30ish for them. If you just can't find any used speakers for cheap, try something like a 6.5" round JBL coaxial car speaker. I think a pair will be $75-$150. Good sound and excellent stereo imaging (which is most important for 'audiophile' purposes). Slap them in a premade cabinet, or whatever. I happen to own a pair of speakers that were $2,000 each but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the sport of putting together a good system for the lowest price possible. My best was $22. $15 for a used Yamaha receiver and $7 for a pair of very decent bookshelf speakers. It would take about $400 to match or beat that system if you bought new stuff at a store. The secret is that you're doing the shipping and handling labor, by driving down to Goodwill. Shipping is the killer that makes ebay more expensive.

@djteknovibe93

Being an ex sound engineer and having had a recording studio before and set up many sound systems and been a dj since 1993 I can say the best, cheap'ish way to have good sound is to get yourself a pair of studio monitors like say the JBL 306P mkII and then buy some acoustic foam to put on your walls and use speaker stands that you can fill with sand using gaffa tap to seal any holes in the stands and put acoustic foam underneath the studio monitors to absorb resonance. You can easily get some thin strips of wood and some material the same colour as your walls and you simply put the wood around each foam tile and then cut the material to stretch over each tile and then staple the fabric to the wood strips at the side of each tile kind of encasing each tile in a wooden frame. Then you use no nails or something to secure the wooden frames to your wall. Then you'll have less sound reflections within your room increasing stereo image and sound quality and the aesthetic impact of the foam panels will be very minimal thanks to the material covering them which is the same as your wall colour. There is no better way to get an accurate representation of how the artists who made the tracks you listen to wanted their tracks to sound than using acoustic treatment and good quality studio monitors. Many audiophiles think they know a lot about sound but know very little and many items such as phono cables and power cables costing hundreds or thousands of pounds or dollars are nothing more than a waste of money and manufacturers know most people who buy them will be tricked into thinking their audio system sounds better when it doesn't. It's called the placebo affect. Do a blind test and you won't notice any difference between a pair of say Van Damme phono cables costing £30 to a pair of cables costing £2,000.

Steve, thank you for your video "consultations!" After the divorce and a move into a small condo, the K-horns and tube amps ended up in the garage - so sad. But I have found a $500 dollar system that makes my small space sing! From your short review on the Dayton Audio MK442T loudspeakers, I jumped on a pair on a special. Not the highest resolution around, but warm and lively. It has enough bass to satisfy without pulsing through the walls to annoy my neighbors. In one of your videos you recommended trying something new as apposed to "leveling up" with more of the same type of gear. So what's the opposite of my beloved 7 Watt 300B SET amp? An open box special crown SLX 1002 power amp - 350 watts a side to power those slender tower speakers. They were also featured in one of your guest presentation videos. Rounding out the gear is an inexpensive (found on Jeff's Online Emporium) DAC/Pre/Bluetooth box as an input (with happy little tubes sticking out of the top). The "system" sounds great - thanks again for the advice.

In the eighties, AIWA was still a thing. One day I walked past a electrical store they had a AiWA mini stereo playing some music, the stereo imaging was stunningly good. In those days I visited a lot of showrooms for speakers, the most impressive ones were Tannoy, some theaters in Hong Kong also use giant Tannoy speakers but that AIWA mini stereo was really impressive. The main part of the stereo was no bigger than the iPad display.

I would like to add the Audio Technica AT-LP3 automatic turntable in black or white (I always prefer white). It has a very basic cartridge that still work, and What HiFi in England gave it a 5 star rating, and they give few turntables that rating at any price. It has speed adjustment settings underneath if its a little fast or slow (each for 33 and 45). I have it with an LP Gear cartridge Vessel L3SE elliptical for $99 (2 gram down force). It's easy to upgrade that cartridge later with a line contact stylus (I have it). It really works well with that turntable. It also has a built in preamp for either MM or MC cartridges or a complete bi-pass. Note: Some of the upgrades are acrylic platter mat, aluminum feet with isolators, Denon DP-300 head shell is identical in either black or silver, complete table isolation stand, LP Gear higher quality belt. Remember it's the cartridge that gives the sound, not the expensive turntables.

He kept asking people to stop with the flash bulbs. He could not play. LSD is a very dangerous drug that has destroyed many lives. It was a real bummer and a bad trip for Jimi. Steve, through thrift store purchases I was able to put an amazing system together. Usually thrift store stereo equipment is cheap crap but occasionally they get high end stuff in. It took a few years put one piece at a time I came up with a great system. I have to make a video of my system.

Great videos Steve. Built my daughter a nice system for Christmas, under $200 and it sounds great (she already has a turntable and headphones) Dayton Audio DTA 2.1BT2 $75--thank you for the recommendation made two exciter XPS sheet panel speakers $16 for two DAEX25FHE drivers and $10 for two XPS 2ftX2ft XPS panels--really nice mid range sound, especially vocals, brass, and strings $75 for the 6.5 inch passive downfiring Dayton Audio subwoofer kit. The sound quality exceeds my expectations; and it doesn't get too loud (an ulterior motive)

I picked up a set of used heresy ii for $400 and and a used two channel integrated Nad amp $100.. I highly recommend my $500 budget system.. it sounds better then some of the $3000 to $4000 systems I’m heard. No joke. Now I’m not tempted to waste money on more expensive gear... hope you guys can all find a system you like. Steve makes the best recommendations.

This man is genius. If you wanna make someone become audiophilled, first give cheap choices (but nice quality). Psycholgycally, every man will never be enough, and then moving up, want more quality, spend more and more money.

I recommend buying older stuff, from the 80s-90, if you want a low budget setup. You can get stuff, that was mid to high end back then for 1/10 the original cost and it will be way better than a new setup in the same price range. The technology for Hi-Fi Systems hasn't changed that much actually and nowadays most stuff gets produced in China and has worse quality anyways.

Awesome video. Budget audio is where the fun is for me. I’ll definitely be looking into the Pioneer thanks to your channel and Zero Fidelity. :) $500 is also more than enough to enter the realm of High End if you’re willing to live with headphones. A JDS Labs Atom amp, Topping D10 DAC, and Sennheiser 58x Jubilee will set you back only $358 and sonically will get you within a whisker of most High End systems. We’re living in amazing times.

Excellent video..! I personally own the Dayton B652 speakers. I can honestly say they do sound nice for what they are... I still haven't gotten around to it but will eventually build new cabinets for them and replace the tweeters... I forgot to volume down one day in my woodshop removing the aux cord from my phone popping the tweeters... I also ran the Dayton powered 10 inch sub... My shop sounded pretty damn good which led me to designing a budget build ($500) or less home stereo set up... I ended up buying 40 of the same factory buyout 6.5s used in the B652's to use in future builds from parts express... These are the same drivers used in some older Polk Audio speakers... I designed an MTM setup to run with stereo subs... More on the subs later lol... I ran two 6.5s along with Dayton Audio 1-1/8" softdomes crossed over at 2.5k in each cabinet... the front baffle is 7.5" wide which really helped being so narrow with baffle diffraction which in turn really made these drivers sound nice, warm, open in the vocals as vocals should be... Next was the sub build... I had two Sony 8" 100watt powered subs that I acquired for free... Honestly they are junk from factory but I designed & built new enclosures... I ended up at .57 tuned to 30 Hz factory was tuned at mid 40s lol... Now powered with 100watt Dayton plate amps these little suckers really hit well for what they are... I also own the Yamaha SR202 receiver which has met my needs above and beyond...!
