I would love that specific topic for me, my neighborhood being considered patrimonial, all renovation plans need approval from the city. This is great, however tricky and more costly. My kitchen window goes from floor to ceiling, and i wouldn't be allowed to change that feature, therefore there's a countertop missing there...

Imagine having a hidden sitting area behind cabinets in the kitchen for when you are baking and waiting with a cozy chair and some books (and preferably a window). That would be so amazing! In general I am all in for hiddem rooms and nooks, not really into open concept personally

My sister has beadboard backsplash and she really hates it. Over the years the seams have lifted from the heat/steam of cooking. It’s not easy to clean after the months roll by. I would avoid it personally.

One of the things I love about your videos is your emphasis on practicality. I am lucky to have a large, well equipped kitchen which gets a rigorous workout daily. It’s my “happy place.” I always chuckle when I think about the oven that was in our “gourmet” kitchen when we bought our house. It wouldn’t hold a 12 pound turkey! When I see meticulously remodeled kitchens in a home where no one cooks, I have to wonder why anyone would spend that kind of money for something that just looks pretty.

I have an opinion about beadboard backsplash! I have it, and I’ve had it for about 10 years so I am totally qualified to speak on it. The grooves do not create a cleaning issue anymore than grout on a tile backsplash, maybe even less than that, truthfully. The issue is that it’s not really a waterproof material! I have to be super careful to dry it if it gets water on it so I don’t get waterlogged wood. I wonder if a 4 inch tile on top of the beadboard would help?

I installed (glued and nailed in) the very thick (close to an 1”) individual wood plank paneling boards as a backsplash, painted it in a medium gloss and loved it! Super wipeable and if needed I could just touch paint a spot or paint the whole thing. I loved it and will install in my new home. The cottage charm aesthetic is worth it if it’s your style. I had it for almost 10 years before I sold the house and the kitchen is what sold my house. But, no, I wouldn’t do those sheets of wood paneling for a back splash or something other than what I did to get an authentic paneling look.

Back in the early 80's Irish country farmhouse was in, the trend was chop up small pieces of hay into your plaster, so bits of hay showed on the walls, to mimic an Irish country cottage, some would use dried flower petals.. I did it around my eat in breakfast nook and loved it, then add concrete yard animals to the window ledge, painted in buttermilk and moss you had whipped up in a blender, spritz lightly daily and the moss would take off growing, throw in a few ferns, and it was cute..lol

I am kind of over open-plan kitchens. There's no way to corral the moisture, the odors, the messes. I also have a dog who likes to get underfoot, put his feet up on the edge of the counter to see what's there, and beg when I make something that he thinks might be delicious. It would be nice to be able to start the dishwasher, have a pot roast going in the instant pot, and mop the floor, without all those sounds & scents intruding into the other rooms of the house.

I am planning on having a section of butch block installed in my kitchen when it gets remodeled this year. I have a large wooden pastry rolling board between my stove and sink that never moves, that sits atop the counter, so might as well build it in. My parents had a 4" thick butcher block table in their kitchen (not for eating at, for kitchen use only, approx. 36"-40" x 72" and at counter height) that I have missed since I moved out when I got married 27 years ago. It was so functional, between prep and baking, it was the great all purpose working surface. As for maintenance, I am getting the end grain, which is easier on the knives, more durable and hides imperfections better then edge grain or plank. I worked for over 15 years in a commercial kitchen growing up, so I am very much into industrial quality materials.

As to the subject: I've had tiny stone mosaic backslash, I had all white standard glossy tile, I've had the subway, but now I have no backsplash at all, and i am loving it. The correctly chosen paint, and very good job leveling the walls did it all, my countertop doesn't even have the silicone behind it. And it makes the kitchen look less like kitchen. Perfect choice for me, and i do cook tons, and grill and fry.

I adore the hidden cabinet trend. Our laundry room is directly connected to our kitchen and I would love (love, love...) to have it hidden like that. Oh, as a side note: I begged my sister to not install butcher block countertops. Two years later, between her cat and food prep, they look horrible. She's currently shopping for quartz. When I was growing up, the part of the counter that was butcher block was used to make bread and that's it. No storage and no other prep. I love that idea if you have the room.

The colored pendant lights reference made me realize that I dislike pendant lighting mostly because of the 80s and 90s, they had red or amber colored glass pendant. I have an orange oven and hood which I love. I have an MCM home built in 1950 so orange was a really common color then. It also happens to be my favorite color so that helps. The orange is set off very nicely with the teak of the cabinetry. It does have stainless steel accents so the fridge and dishwasher are stainless steel. I think all orange appliances would be overkill. I think every appliance being a funky color only works well when the color is a bit more muted (light mint, pastel blue, etc).

Another great video, Garrick, and I love your discussion of these trends! The secret doors and retro painted appliances are pretty cool! The backsplash discussion was interesting, too. In Phoenix, I have also seen brushed stainless and copper used for backsplashes. These provide a look that's not too busy with items on the counter and they're easy to clean. Would love to see you do a video on how to find our design "style." I'd love to know more about how and why YOU make some of the choices you do for your space or when working with clients. This would be informative and fun, and maybe even help us to avoid costly design mistakes! Thank you, Garrett!!!

Bead board, love the look of it (fits perfectly with my decorating style), although I have no idea how practical it would be as a backsplash? I've lived in several old homes that have had plaster walls, love the look of it way more than dry wall and wish I had it in my current home. I have several vintage pictures in my kitchen and I'm completely enamored with the look! I do have them leaning on counters but not near the stove or sink. I think any of those trends could look great in the right kitchen. A trend people seem to either love or hate is open shelving. I’m putting a couple of shelves in my kitchen for pottery and glassware, but not next to the stove. People who object say everything will get greasy, but nothing else in my kitchen gets greasy, so I’m not worried about that. I’m thinking ahead to accessibility as I age, so I didn’t want upper cabinets I couldn’t reach (we’ll have a pantry, so don’t need the space). Our house is on the rustic side, so I think a couple,e of live edge shelves are going to look great.

Wonderful video, Garrett, thank you! This week, Houzz has a feature on kitchen pendant lights. Most of them are awful! Most are clear glass. Some are absolutely HUGE! One photo shows black glass globes, another, wicker baskets. Did anyone think about cleaning these things? Some totally overwhelm their kitchens. Ridiculous! I have Hubbardton Forge’s single Erlenmeyer pendants over my island and the matching five-light pendant over the attached table. They are small and elegant, and don’t detract from my kitchen decor.

Loving the cozy writer-esque look Garrett! I think I o like the beaded board backsplash though it's kind of unexpected. The hidden secret pantry is bomb! I love that. One thing I want to know what you think about is the built in wine rack in the kitchen. I have this one that was built in the seventies. It's heavy duty, beautiful (surprisingly) and well built. I am repainting and I think it's kind of cool even though normally I might not think so. I want to buy some Perrier or wine to put up there for guests. It also has spaces for wine glasses though I am not using that right now.

It is possible to get a beadboard look FRP (Fiber Resin Plastic) panels, which is common in restaurants where a portion of the kitchen is within view of the public. This would be very hygienic and easy to clean, but you need to see the quality in person to make sure that it isn't too shiny and plastic looking. PVC panels would definitely look plastic. Wood panels could be ok if they are painted with a waterproof semi-gloss or gloss grade paint.

I have a beautiful mantle vent hood with a copper panel backsplash. I had to fight with my kitchen designer to get it but I knew what I wanted and I was not wrong! Hanks for another great video.

I think the back splashes all look wonderful. I also think that if you have them behind your sink, you need to consider your life. It could work is you and anyone you live with will look at that area all the time and clean. If you have kids, maybe not. The water damage you will have from minor spills that people don't notice is huge. As for the hoods, I don't know how you clean grease off plaster. I think, if you don't cook much, it looks fabulous. As for the trend I'm seeing, it's kitchens painted very dark. I love the way it photographs, but you better have an extensive lighting plan. Thanks for this video!

I love these ideas! I’m quite fond of the bead board idea. Maybe a special paint would help with the cleaning? And I’m just crazy about the plaster! And the covered hoods! I like all the textures it adds. I think it’s very sophisticated. That said I’m just painting my kitchen walls & I’m thinking of doing my cabinets blackish, however they are wrapped with some vinyl like stuff. I’m also debating on if I’m going to do white on top, black bottom.

Love your channel!!! I wish you could talk about things like bookcases or coffee tables. Not which ones but how to decorate them. How much is too much. I am not taking about books or magazines. You are awesome and I love your vidoes

I think beadboard and butcher block are too much maintenance. And I agree that fine art in the kitchen in isn’t the best place for it unless you don’t really cook. One thing that I’ve been noticing is fabric pedant shades. They seem difficult to keep clean. I love the tower cabinets and larder cabinet. I also love the enamel appliances. They look so fun.

Terrific! Thank you. I’m going for bead board because my backsplash wall is damaged. It will look good with my white cabinets and countertops.

Oh that one photo of the hood mantle and the little stove in the spot, that would be me, no money for a 48inch stove, had to go with a 30, haha

I had a beadboard backsplash for the last 13 years. I chose it because I didn’t have a ton of money when we first did our kitchen and I wanted natural countertops and nice appliances. I have to say, it held up, looked great, never got really dirty, and I got tons of compliments on it. I did get tired of it after so long and just replaced it with beautiful tile I love, but I would absolutely recommend this trend. The contractor I hired to do the tile thought I was insane to get rid of the beadboard because it still looked nice! It’s practical, cost-effective, and attractive if you like the look.

I'm still debating what to put over our eat-in kitchen table wall. I took down all of my mom's "wine" theme. I just left the clock up for now🤔

Hi Garrett! I see that you posted yesterday, but better a day later, being it's Valentine's Day today. Wishing you and your Valentine a happy one.❤️ On topic, I really like our beadboard backsplashes. Very nice, and I find them easy to keep clean. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I like the look. I shy away from the term, farmhouse. Until that became a thing, I always called my look old fashioned. I stay away from that chippy look and the only "signs" /art I put up is what I call fruit crate art. Second, you asked for questions about what you think of certain kitchen ideas... If I had one kitchen wish, I would want all lower cabinets to be drawers. So much easier to get to things. What do you think? I already have my dream come true walk in pantry.😁

Happy Valentines Day from all of us at LeChic Central! All lower cabinet drawers would be awesome in my opinion, accept under the sink of course. :)

I want a hidden door and secret space in every room! I’d feel like I was living in a house next to Narnia or the Secret Garden. Plus, I could hide if anyone comes knocking on the door to visit. 😇

I had beadboard backsplashes in my farmhouse and now in my cottage. It is perfect for both home styles! The old farmhouse had real beadboard (tongue and groove very slim boards). That was challenging to keep clean. My cottage has beadboard paneling which isn't nearly as charming but much easier to keep clean!

I have bead board around my tile backsplash, and from personal experience I can say it is hard to keep clean. It is hard to clean, especially if you fry a lot, grease it's impossible to remove without removing the paint as well. I can't beging to imagine having it as a backsplash.
