The animation and storytelling is amazing enough and they even synchronised the original TV series’ theme song along with it!!

1:44 the "fake" Wukong, known as the Six-ears maccaque (or monkey whatever) is one of the 4 monkey-entities that has equal power to the real Wukong (the stone monkey). After Wukong smashed some bandits trying to robe his master, the Tang Monk (Sanzang) was so furious that he expelled him from the party. Six-ears then shapeshifted into Wukong and attacked the party, stole all of their luggage to form his own pilgrimage team. After hearing that news, the real Wukong rushed to his mountain to find the six-ears already tricked Wukong's minions into believe he was their king. Wukong and Six-ears then engaged to a lengthy battle that extended from Heaven to Hell, no one even Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva could distinguish them except for Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva's pet, but he knew that they couldn't subdue the fake Wukong in Hell nor Heaven, only the Gautama Buddha can, so he advised them to go seek the Buddha. The Buddha then trapped the fake Wukong under his bowl, forced him to return to his true form and Wukong gave Six-ears a good whack for his life. This is what told in the novel, but there are others deeper meaning than that. Some theorize that since only the Buddha could tell them apart and has the power to defeat both of them, the real Wukong was indeed killed by the fake Wukong (and that Six-ears has been a docile discipline of Buddha intended to replace the rebellious Wukong). Some said that both the real (good) and fake (evil) are Wukong's personalities, as Wukong is the symbolization of human's Mind (Wukong = Mind, Sanzang = Body/Heart, Bajie = Emotion, Sandy = Perseverance, Dragon horse = Willpower), we human all have angel and devil on our shoulders, constantly fighting each other to gain control of our body. As the journey went on, Wukong/Mind became closer and closer to Buddhism enlightenment, to the point that the evil personalities manifested itself into real form and tried to stop the good personalities to achieved total body control.

The final cutscene is the story of Journey To the West in reverse order.

The last animation is Wukong's memory, and it is flashback. This is actually an interesting point on the Chinese Internet, that is, reversing the story order of Journey to the West is still a good story. The author skillfully made it into Wukong's memory. So, Wukong (me) definitely won't choose to wear the crown, as for how to develop it in the future, it depends on DLCs. Journey to the West is a novel with a long history, and the original work uses mythological stories to reflect the social reality of that time. There are various interpretations and adaptations, and as far as I know, there are five or six different directions of interpretation. The story points to completely different directions and all of them are reasonable, so no one can fully explain it because it was co created by many people.

Ok so this animation is basically Journey to the West played backwards, there are tons of references to the original story (like how the Tang Monk recites the incantation that "tightens" the headband to tame Wukong), you can also see how Wukong killed his clone (六耳猕猴)or killing his inner demon in a metaphorical sense. I can't even catch all the references, you gotta read JTTW to get it all. But at any rate, this is some top tier animation making. Oh btw the music in this? Yeah that's basically every Gen X and Millennial Asian kid's childhood anthem, words can't describe how I felt when I heard it brought back to life like this. Chills man, god damn chills.

This animation is actually the sixth relic of Wukong that Erlang Shen secretly hides in his own eyes. It represents Wukong's spiritual will to resist heaven. It is shown in the form of memory. After defeating Erlang Shen, we saw it in the form of a reverse playback. Appearing means that this memory about Wukong's life has been passed on to the Destined One.

3:56 Transitions from flashbacks to present moment. Yes, the Monkey King's army is dead in the present moment. But, Wukong is finally free.
