Definitely not worth it alone but if you’re upgrading your SSD already it’s convenient enough for an extra $10 to get some low quality but good enough tools to take it apart and swap out the SSD while cooling it slightly more than before. The Ally needs all the help it can get in the cooling department so even if it’s better by 1 degree it’ll be worth it

Isn't the temp reading in reference to the CPU/APU not the SSD?
@StarViruZ

That's what I thought cos the average SSD operating temps should be between 0-70 Celsius, anything close or beyond these limits can shorten the SSD lifespan.

(Steam deck) I tried, but seems to thick for the case to fully close.. which means the main silver heat shield that goes over it, is lifted up higher, which means none of the thermal pads are completely touching in the places they’re supposed to be..

Hows your steamdeck lately? I've heard this copper heatsink could potentially slow wifi speeds and decrease air flow over certain areas. If so it should be minimal and the heatsink itself should balance it out with certain cooler temps here and there

Interesting video and thanks for testing this. The results, however, are silly. An ssd heat sink can't possibly affect apu temps. Any drastic fluctuation as big as 10 degrees is more likely to just be weird power management of the ally.
@PlaySpace-gaming

Yeah, The Rog Ally sometimes auto adjusted the APU Watt by itself. It's weird. There some videos on KZitem showing why disabling CPU boost can help out a lot. Asus likes to boost the CPU way too much for no reason, when disabled everything functions better. In terms of temperatures, battery life, and even performance.

FYI, do NOT install the thermal pads on top of the paper label on the ssd! That's basically pointless, as that paper label will NOT transfer heat through to the thermal pads and heatsink basically at all. You NEED to remove the paper label on the ssd before applying the thermal pads.
@Cancer-sy8px

But Linus did the test and found no significant difference between removing or leaving the paper on top...

That's not entirely true. Some paper labels used for thermal printing (like the ssds) can pass the heat to the thermal pads without much significant difference

Everyone with an Ally should be changing their OC power settings, my temps are great now, it on settles around 70C at highest (DIV, Cyberpunk). Change “Aggressive” to “disabled” video on KZitem for help somewhere. (May prevent sd reader burn/sd card it’s self)

the heatsink really didnt do anything for the 1st few sec it did drop the temp to 84 locked but without the heatsink the temp dropped to 82 seems the controller and nands cooled on its own think you might have the pads on the wrong part of the NVMe

Proper heat syncs have fins - not that this won't help but normally you need more surface area to wick the heat away from the source. Likely what will happen is the SSD will run cooler for a bit but once the surrounding area has warmed up then the flat metal heat sync you installed will warm up just as much as the SSD. Basically what you have is passive cooling, as mentioned before it can help but you'd be much better off with fins in the metal heat sync.

Nah thats cap. You compared temp when it was at 52w winding down to 30w while the bottom was already at 28w, you can literally see both temp results are the same near the end of your gameplay when they are both running at a stable wattage. It looks like you recoreded right after turning off turbo mode to make it "look" like it ran hotter.
@PlaySpace-gaming
Жыл бұрын
Thank you for pointing out that. But no, I didn't turn off turbo mode. They are both plugged and turbo mode all of the time. The Rog Ally auto adjusted the APU Watt by itself and I said at the end of video " the ssd heatsink does offer a minor reduction in heat, but the difference is not significant. Upgrading is optional". Many steam deck users attached heat sink to their ssd also, it actually reduced 8-10 degree.
@Infinite_Ouroboros
Жыл бұрын
@PlaySpace-gaming Fair enough, soz for sounding aggressive, wrote this at 4am last night but yea I still think it's somewhat misleading because the wattage and temp spikes when you plug in the charger so using that as a comparison is not really fair (spike only happens when you change to turbo or plug charger in). In terms of the heat ssd heat shield, does it touch the plastics or still have clearance to the plastic rog backplate?
@PlaySpace-gaming
Жыл бұрын
@@Infinite_Ouroboros No worries bro, I appreciate your clarification and the points you raised. You're right that those moments can cause temporary increases in power consumption and heat generation. It's important to consider such spikes when comparing power consumption or thermal performance. As for the SSD heat shield, it's designed to provide thermal insulation and protection for the SSD module. While it may come in contact with certain components, including the plastic parts, there is a gap between the heat shield and the backplate also.

Does the rubber on the thumbgrips come into contact with the actual console? I have some Xbox KontrolFreaks and they do. It’s something minor but it does stick to the surface on the worse moments so it’s not ideal

Interesting! but I do not recommend it. The SSD lacks proper screwing, gluing, or taping to secure it in place. Consequently, any minor jolt or bump could dislodge the SSD from its socket, potentially resulting in damage to both the socket and the SSD.
