I actually own a Yema Superman. The Armee De L'Air special edition in 41mm with the house movement, but not the GMT complication. I will say these are easily the most underrated watches on the market. I have hardly worn any of my other watches for the last 2 months and the watch has only maybe lost a minute in that time. The watch is extremely well built with a great feel. It turns heads with watch nerds and its a brand I have yet to encounter anyone who has heard of them. The bezel lock is a little silly, but it is unique. It's a rare piece, at least in North America, and it wears like a more expensive watch. If you get the 41mm the lug width is 20mm. That was a necessity for me, because I only keep one size of straps on hand for simplicity. The down side is ordering out of France. You will get the joy of paying the import duty on top of the price, so keep that in mind. I also cringe to think what servicing a house movement Yema will be like someday.

I’ll tell you this little story. I started collecting watches a month or so into lockdown. I watched a range of KZitem videos including The Urban Gentry. I happened on an Urban Gentry video where you were talking watches, culture and stuff. I thought what is this guy on about, I tuned in for watch reviews... 6 months later I consider your reviews the most honest, balanced, entertaining and importantly the most enriching. I learn something every time, history, trends, and you have that certain gentry style which does not suffer from any form of male sexism. Bravo!

I own a Yema, I'm in love with their designs and the brand is getting a lot of attention as of late, but there are some things that really rub me the wrong way. Forums are full with people complaining about horrible customer service, numerous quality control issues with the Navygraf, watch service and repairs only in Morteau. Then there are the plastic movement holders or the fact that Yema launched the Flygraf this summer and only two months later they launch their new improved movement, so early adopters like me are stuck with a watch with the outdated MBP1000... That's not cool Yema!
@rwheller
3 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. I too was a customer of the first Flygraf M1 and was disappointed that Yema released the watch when they clearly knew that the improved YEMA2000 movement was on its way. I contacted them only to be told there was nothing they would do and if I wanted the updated movement I needed to pay for it.... Safe to say I won't be buying another Yema if this is their business model which is a shame because I really like my M1.
@matslundgren1632
3 жыл бұрын
Be proud of your M1 and wear it in good health, and as many have written on the forums it is probably the small batches of the MBP1000 that will have the best value in the long run as it was the first in house movement. And also, I know some people have asked Yema about servicing and they admit that the MBP1000 is so similar to the 2824 that you could probably treat it like such and service it locally. It is an ETA homage you know :)

Fixing a dive time bezel by the crown is not the best idea. Sure it protects from bumps but on a diver bezel a bump can only increase the elapsed time therefore urging you to the surface even earlier than normal. BUT many time their ascent by setting the time to 0 at every pressure level. Something you cannot do when you are already under water and rotating the bezel means unscrewing the crown. Fixing a GMT bezel on the other hand is a great idea.

I have a bronze Steinhart Ocean One. I've had it about 5 years now and love the patina that has formed, dark where the case doesn't come into contact with sleeves, lighter where it does ie lug tips. Looks like the Yema uses the same type of aluminium bronze as the Steinhart and Tudor BB. If you want to encourage the patina don't force it but swim in the sea with it. As you said it then is an extension of you and your lifestyle. Buy one!

I have one on it's way this February from the Kickstarter campaign. I already have a Navygraf and a Superman Heritage Blue, I couldn't resist the low Kickstarter pricing. I have had a Bronze Glycine Combat Sub for a couple of years now that I really love, it has developed a dark dull finish much like an old copper penny that I really like. If I wear the watch often, the patina wears off the sharp edges and points on the case slightly, giving it brighter highlights that really add to the look. If I had wanted to keep the watch looking shiny new, I think just giving it a light polish with a soft cloth periodically would do the trick. To get the extreme green corrosion that you see on some bronze watch cases, you need to make an effort, exposing it to sulphur or vinegar of other substances that massively accelerate the "patina". I tried it out when I first got the Glycine, decided it wasn't for me, and easily polished the watch to it's original, gleaming state. I also like the metallic smell of the bronze, although many don't. It smells like old copper coins.

I was smitten with it the moment you shared a preview on your chat with Marc and managed to place an order for it on the kickstarter - cannot wait till February! I too loved the fact that while it has hints of the Tudor/Rolex to it, it had it's own unique design cues, brand history and character as well! While I love the Rolex GMTs, I have been looking for a relatively affordable GMT for a while and did not want a straight homage either. This would be my first 'expensive' watch and I have my fingers crossed that the servicing won't be too difficult. Lovely video as always, and thanks for shining a light on some of these brands I might not have found about otherwise!

The GMT is my favorite complication, having it no less than twelve watches from a range of brands. I'm glad to see you covering some lesser known brands like Yema. When you get to covering Longines in the future, consider their Conquest GMT, a variant of their Conquest. Another brand to look at some time are the Certina, one of the Swatch Group on the same tier as Hamilton, Mido and Tissot that tends to be ignored. Enjoyed this video about the Yema, highlighting the brand.
@OvidiuHretcanu

7:20 that's how every watch company like to justify it, advertising this as being "careful to customer skin", but is NOT the reason why the case back is stainless steel. The reason is pure technical, it HAS to be stainless steel: you cannot screw a bronze cashback on a bronze case since, as it will eventually develop a patina it will fuse to each other in time (titanium on titanium bond as well, although is a different phenomenon). Even the crown does not screw on bronze, but on a stainless steel tube. Is still an issue for the bezel as well, but since this will be used more often, the chances to get bond with the case is a bit low.

Yema always delivering bang for buck, especially now with in-house movements. But even their out-of-the-box options are very competitively priced. Lots of great manufacturers out there providing awesome options for under $2000. Sinn, Glycine, Hamilton, just to name a few. You dont need to spend $5000 for 300M water resistance. Are these brands heirlooms that will retain MSRP? No. But you're not buying them to put in a safe. You're buying them to wear and enjoy. Thats 90% of the fun of owning a watch -- the wearing part and the not worrying about a scratch or two part.

About the alloy formula, I think most brands use a copper-tin or Cu-Sn alloy, which turns green more easily as it patinates. The most iconic watch of this category is probably Panerai. However, when aluminium becomes the major alloying element, the Cu-Al alloy it produces does not form verdigris (the green stuff) very easily. The most iconic in this category would be the Tudor bronze BB. The Cu-Al alloy is both stronger and morr corrosion resistant than Cu-Sn alloy.
@tilio9380
3 жыл бұрын
Based on what I have seen from posts of people with their bronze superman, as well as the official photos Yema posted on their kickstarter, I am willing to guess that yema probably uses some kind of Cu-Al alloy similar to that used by Tudor, as all the pictures I have seen for both models show them developing a dark brown natural patina instead of turning green.

The thing I don't like about every sub $2k "GMT" watch I've found is the GMT complication is backwards. You can modify the GMT hand in hour increments but when you move the hour hand the whole thing changes. This is, unfortunately, pretty useless for the function of traveling since it means you have to reset the entire watch when you enter a new timezone. TGV, I would love a video where you find the best proper GMT watch under $1k. Currently I use my $80 Vostok 24 hour dial where I just spin the bezel for a new timezone. In proper Russian style it is really simple, and works. Even handles half hour offsets just fine! :)

Yema has only that one diver case and they offer it in different styles, but it's not really ideally suitable for non-divers. I quite like Flygraf, but would like it to be thinner and lighter instead of the useless 300 m water resistance. It is however great that we have more in-house movements. It signals that mechanical watches are doing well, and we really do get different watches instead of the same watch in different cases.

Thank you for your excellent and detailed review. I’ve watched this video several times now. I’ve backed the Bronze GMT and really looking forward to the completed Kickstarter. I’ve decided to go the Bronze Black GMT. It looks so good in your video. Cheers.

i've enjoyed watching my brass, not bronze, ventus mori diver (singapore) age and patina over the last year. automatic (seiko), 200m, horween strap, very robust and nautical, under $300. good value and interesting alternative to stainless.

Hello Tristano. You are wright, the watch has an incredible charming style and makes boring the standard Superman. But, if I had to go for one, would go for the standard one, wich is absolutely beautiful. Although, you will always know that there's even one still more beatiful, the bronze one. But it's ok, I would handle it. Said that, a wellcomed fresh air to diver designs. Very nice walks in the city too.

Love my Superman GMT with the green bezel! Great everyday watch and built to handle the elements as well. Agree, 18mm is the better choice for strap size. The current 19mm is the down side but Yema does offer some good, strap choices on their website. Great review!

As always, very nice intro editing with all those images referencing. Cool that you got to see the Yema Superman, a brand you love. I tried to get that bronze version too but with the blue dial but they when out so fast. Still could got a hold of a stainless/bronze green dial version. Not as beautiful maybe, but the aging process intrigues me. I also find it class that they made it in two versions, depending on your wrist size and that they give you two bracelets with them of different materials. A nice touch. As for the "Pure Class" translation, word for word it wouldn't make much sense. But maybe "La Superman Bronze, c'est la classe !" would translate the thought you have about it.

Zelos were one of the early brands using bronze cases, certainly before many many other brands 🙂

A Rallygraf with a brown dial would be absolutely lovely! Such a beautiful classic design watch! The stainless Superman isn’t really my cup of tea, but the bronze Superman with the gray dial looks very nice! The burgundy bezel on the bronze watch takes the cake, though! That’s awesome looking!!! Love it!

@@theurbangentry I love the bronze Superman, I just don’t like the stainless steel version of it. I fell in love with Yema the second I saw that brown dial Rallygraf! That’s such an awesome looking watch! Someday I’m gonna own one!

WOW, while that is kinda crazy, it is justly deserved, they are still worth it. I bet Seiko will not make one like that again. Thank you, Best regards, TGV
