I was a purple belt for almost 5 years before i got my brown, purple belt in my opinion is where you find a gameplan with options to get the end result of a win, purple belt division is usually loaded with killers, brown belt is learning leg subs and counter advances, then black is the begining of mastering all the above and intuitively having a counter for evey counter until a weakness shows. I’m really good at top even with these big guys. I love starting in 1/2 guard, reverse them do a pressure side to high back take. From there I hit back triangles and knee bars. It’s so fun. I love looking at their faces on the kind of pressure I can generate on them. It always just shocks them. To clarify, this is not happening on the black belts I train with. They kill me. Lots of purple belts are underrated, or maybe underranked is the proper word. Young athletes - the talented ones - often improve more quickly than they get promoted, and they are still purple while they're actually somewhere between brown and black in terms of skill. Coaches just tend to kind of stop for a while before giving them the next belt at this point (various reasons for that, but it happens pretty often, in my experience).

@@tededo Well, I earned my purple at my first school, under a Chris Haueter black belt. I transitioned to a Renzo Gracie school after my first gym closed. The level of student is far higher at my new academy, and it’s about 80/20 no-gi. I had to unlearn many habits because all of students learn leg locks. So, it took me far longer than usual to earn my brown belt. I’m still discovering what works for me. Half-guard, clamp, a few basic sweeps and subs, and a few leg entries. It 49, I opt for sustainability. Plus, I feel awkward, because lots of younger, athletic guys kick my butt. Makes me feel like the belts are irrelevant.

Yes, exactly my opinion. A lot of people say white or black is the most important but the truth is that since purple you are to untrained people like a monster… till blue there are people with a little understanding of grappling and talent who can defeat you. Since you are purple, there is something different where you are more than average. In the most Tournaments you are at purple advanced and from white to blue you are beginner. So its the first step with purple to get truly good at jiu jitsu compared to normal People

This just proves it really isn’t about experience when it comes to martial arts it’s about the skill, some people learn faster than others, I’ve been doing boxing for about 1 year and 7 months almost 8 now in September, I’ve never stepped foot in a boxing gym everything was self taught, my parents said I have to earn it by doing good in school if I wanna go to a boxing gym or get a punching bag that really upset me so I just started teaching myself because they forget about the promises they make and I knew that wasn’t gonna happen regardless, glad I’ve been practicing this whole time tho it was definitely worth it.

Eaaaaasily the best and most fun belt. You get to know your game, no leadership or influential pressure of a black or brown belt and it’s the most enjoyable. Give the tenured belt enough to have a good round and there’s a big enough gap between white and blue to have something to show. 100% purple

It's like the equivalent to being 17 years old you're not an 18-year-old adult and you're not a 16 year old kid 17 years old was the best time of my life😂

I agree, Im having the most fun at purple. The no expectation thing is right on, and I also have no expectations for myself other than to progress.

I’m a purple belt. I told my coach to leave me here and don’t promote me any further for the exact reasons he said 😅

Man! Still on my way to purple... 48yo Blue Belt here... had a hiccup in my path. Recuperating from bulging discs, most likely from my 20 years as a graphic designer so sitting on a chair for that long has taken a toll on my body, back and shoulders to be more specific. I'll get there though. Oss.

He forgot to mention that purple belts are the main target of white and blue belts, and the cannon fodder of the higher belts
