Greetings from Bharat (India). I tremendously admire Bob Dylan, although It took me over 10 - 15 years to come around to appreciate his music & voice. Ironically, it was through the music of Mark Knopfler that I was introduced to Dylan. Anyone associated with Mark must be REALLY good. Right? I didn't like him in the beginning. I was like, why is he not singing like Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Elton John, Springsteen or Louis Armstrong. Then I listened to Mark Knopfler & Tom Petty whose voice have the shades of Dylan. And then I got to listen to " Like a Rolling Stone " & everything changed. :) Thanks for your wonderful videos. They are very insightful, especially for people like myself from other side of the globe who do not understand American pop culture much.

Well said! I would also put Dylan at a close second to The Beatles in my list of favorite artists. The more I've explored his work, the deeper and deeper it gets. I was listening to Tell Tale Signs yesterday and had one of those moments where it all felt so rich, so powerful, so real, such great grooves with the band, that I felt I could be satisfied if it was the only record on my shelf. And so much of his work can evoke that same response. What an artist.

Great list. My number 1 is and will always be Highway 61 Revisited, but as you say, ranking is totally subjective and there are so many great Dylan albums. Love & Theft would probably be in my top 10, as would Another Side. But Highway 61 seems to represent so much of what has always drawn me to him. I remember first playing a copy of the album in my bedroom, aged about 12 in the early 80s, and I knew that was it for me. The lyrics, the voice, the band, the attitude; everything. By the way, the artwork on Blood On The Tracks is not Bob's; both are lithographs by David Oppenheim.

However, I was unable to do so as I kept changing my mind. Every single time I put a record on I’d say to myself, “but this one is so good”. I finally gave up. I am a very enthusiastic Bob fan. Just an addition to what you said - Mostly agree. I went to see Bob Dylan just before COVID hit. I am a huge fan of his songwriting. Before I went I was warned by a couple of Dylan fans that his live performances varied a lot. I must have copped him on a bad night. He was truly awful - probably the worst live concert I have seen (and I've seen a few). We were ready for the fact that he didn't interact with the audience - that's par for the course. He played the piano and did adaptations of a lot of his songs - that's OK except his voice was terrible. People walked out - a fair bit of yelling out from the audience. I'm still glad I saw him before I die. An interesting experience. BTW Mazza - great video.

Thanks, Mazzy, really enjoyed this. Apologies for the nerd out, but I can’t see that anyone has yet mentioned this spot of Dylan trivia. The consensus (I think) is that Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands was written for his first wife, Sara Lownds (a name which even sounds a little like the song title). Dylan himself later sang in the song Sara (from Desire), ‘Staying up for days in the Chelsea Hotel, writing Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands for you.’

Nice list Mazzy! People need to lighten up with these types of videos. They are subjective and they are your opinion. That's the idea. It gets the blood moving. lol. I really enjoy your insights. I especially like those videos where you reminisce about a specific time and place in your life when discussing the music. Not a bad listing at all. I would have put "Freewheelin'" higher on my list simply because "Hard Rains a-gonna-fall" is the song that got me to love Dylan. As soon as I heard that song, my world changed. I just listened to music in a different way after first hearing that song. Still is my favorite song of his along with "Rolling Stone". Glad you recognized his most recent work but kind of surprised that "Time out of Mind" was not included. Still remember picking up "Love and Theft" when it was released on Sept 11, 2001. I was the only customer in the store. Getting home and just immersing myself in that album got me thru that terrible day and time. Anyway, an enjoyable video Mazzy.

Hey Maz, Another great overview from you dear friend (I’ve been a subscriber since KZitem first prompted me with your hilarious “Clapton/wanker” textbook quality rant!)… I’m totally down with at least your top 5, but am a confused “deer in the headlights” with most of the more recent stuff, in spite of the efforts of my nephew to bring me up to speed (being too busy shaking my fist and saying, “You kids…”). I’m greatly in agreement in regard to the “lost albums” “JWH” and “New Morning,” and I might say “Self Portrait” is also greatly overlooked! Bob’s incredible sense of humor is so often below the radar of the casual fan, or those of late arrival. Why there should be a house gypsy fortune teller in a “big hotel” in a “little Minnesota town” is of no consequence in the greater “Dylan-verse!” And that leads me to mention his wonderful “Christmas Album,” whereby Mr. Zimmerman leaves “no turn unstoned!” A quick personal anecdote. The youngest of five brothers and a total mama’s boy, I had always craved my father’s approval (he being a total Johnny Cash fan!). When Bob brought out “Nashville Skyline,” I ran to the local furniture store and invested my meager lunch money, happy and full of enthusiasm! That evening, with baited breath, I played the opening track with high hopes. My father listened stone faced throughout this historic duet, and as I lifted the stylus from the groove and looked up in most hopeful expectation, he tersely observed, “Johnny Cash is a WAY better singer!” Thanks Mazzy, always love your posts! Best, Glenn “They call me a bummer and a gin-sot too, but what cares I for praise…” “Days of ‘49”

I don't do New Year's resolutions, but I have decided to listen to a different Bob Dylan album every day, give or take, this year to really get to grips with him. I have always admired his music but not always liked it. In fact, I have always used Bob Dylan as an example of the difference between liking somebody and recognizing their greatness. I started randomly with 'Rough and Rowdy Ways' and 'Love and Theft' - about a 30% hit rate of interesting songs to phone-it-in songs on those two, I reckon. Now I am in the Nashville period. Did 'Blonde on Blonde' yesterday. The musicianship on that is stunning. There are a couple of phone-it-in twelve bar blues songs, but the rest are wonderful. I am now listening to 'John Wesley Harding,' which is more subdued but charming. I was really surprised, though, by how short 'All Along the Watchtower' is. I have always loved 'Blood on the Tracks' and have also always really liked 'Desire' too. Ditto 'Street Legal' - 'Senor' is a match for 'Knocking on Heaven's Door,' in my opinion. I'll take your advice on what to listen to next after Nashville hits the rearview mirror. Dylan fans seem to really like 'Modern Times,' which I remember as execrable, unless I am confusing it with something else. At some point, I fear I will be tearing my hair out and skipping tracks after about thirty seconds, but for the moment I am loving the journey.

One of my favorite things in life has long been to go to a town that's either familiar or unfamiliar to me with someone who has spent a lot of time there and to get their personal tour of the place, to see it through their eyes. That's what you do with these lists, so I thank you for the Mazzy Tours. But, of course, "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid" was a Sam Peckinpah movie. You were probably thinking of Altman's "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" from a couple years earlier, which had a Leonard Cohen soundtrack. The use of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" as Slim Pickens' riverside death dirge is one of the most beautiful onscreen tributes any actor has ever received. So, Slim has two of the greatest exits in movie history: riding the bomb in "Dr. Strangelove," and sitting by the river at sunset in "Pat Garrett" -- a scene, by the way, that was echoed in the death scene of Mike Ehrmantraut in "Breaking Bad" many years later.

That brought to mind another quite precious version from the 1971 Rudy The Fifth album by Rick Nelson. As you know Dylan was a Nelson fan, even paying him tribute doing Rick’s Lonesome Town on tour when Rick died. If you haven’t heard it in awhile, or ever, give it a listen. Blood on the Tracks has to be his best album: has such cohesion and raw, emotional depth.

Thanks Norman for a moving tribute to the singer-songwriter of genius, Bob Dylan in rock and folk music. Liked your choices and reason s for those choices. I think John Wesley Harding (of which you brilliantly describe) is Dylan's no 1 album. This album followed perhaps his most frenetic period of drug-fueled psychedelic rock in Highway '61 and Blonde on Blonde, perhaps his peak rock records. But all great artists have to land back on their feet to restore their spiritual energy, and this he did with JWH, a quiet folk-rock album of inner strength: the perfect summation of his genius. So I place JWH as no.1, Blood on the Tracks as no. 2, Blonde on Blonde as no.3, Highway'61 as no.4.

MY HIGH SCHOOL KEY CLUB DITCHED CLASS ONE DAY THEN ENDED UP IN STUART HERDER'S ROOM LISTENING TO BOB DYLAN ALBUMS. USUALLY OUR GROUP WANTED TO GO SOMEWHERE IN THE OUTDOORS FOR SOME TYPE OF ADVENTURE. BUT WITH BOB DYLAN PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND, NOBODY SEEMED TO OBJECT TO JUST HANGING OUT AND TAKING IN A NICE DOSE OF LIVING.

GREAT list. One slight problem with it -- no Time Out of Mind. I think that the heart issues Bob was dealing with at the time of the that album produced some of his most intimate songs. Really enjoy your channel; please keep up the good work.

Great video Mazzy - Time Out Of Mind would have to be in/around the top 5 for me along with Blood On The Tracks, Highway 61, Blonde On Blonde - Rough & Rowdy Ways only improving over time as well and may sneak in ahead of Bringing It All Back Home..

Curious about your thought of "Shot of Love"being named by Dylan as his favorite Dylan record? I like it better than Slow Train which always sounded too sterile to me for a Dylan record. I like your picks but I would have Love & Theft much higher, certainly higher than Modern Times, which always sounded like L&T outtakes. I actually prefer Tempest to Modern Times

Dylan debuted "Only a Pawn" on the birthday of Medgar Evers not far from where his assassin lived in Greenwood, Mississippi ... and later played the song at the March on Washington.

I’m almost identical on my list. Blood on the Tracks isn’t quite that high up there yet but it has been creeping up for years. Blonde gets a slight edge over Highway 61 for me mainly because of sentimental factor that I fell in love with it first. Both records are light years ahead of any other album done by any other group - Blonde was released two months before Freak Out and three months before Revolver. Highway 61 was released the same month as Help!. Now the Beatles are my favourite band and I love Help but Highway 61 sounds like it was made on another planet compared to its contemporaries. And while Dylan didn’t get psychedelic with his music he sure as shit did with his lyrics. Unmatched. I might even giveHighway 61 the nod as his best and maybe the best ever made if you compare to other albums released at the same moment. But both are ahead of their time.

Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands is definitely about Sara Lownds, Mazz (in reference to your question near the end of this video). On the track, Sara, on Desire, there is a line where he admits it straight off the bat: "Sat up for days in the Chelsea Hotel, writin' Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands for you ... " Anyway, this is a good review. For me, it's difficult to choose a favourite album because he has done about a dozen or so that I think are truly great, as well as others that will have to settle for just being excellent! 😂😂

Wow! I never saw that second issue of Blood On The Tracks! A tough task of choosing only 15. I would have slipped Time out of Mind in there - the great My Heart's in the Highlands, his musings on mortality after his near fatal heart trouble. Also the Rolling Thunder Revue - all remakes but to hear him go full Rock, with Mick Ronson on guitar ! He might be the only artist where you could choose 15 and still leave room to consider more. BTW, Sam Peckinpah directed Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, with James Coburn, Kris Kristofferson- his wife Rita Coolidge, Slim Pickens and yes, Bob Dylan.

Dylan, along with Allman Brothers my favorite bands/artists all time. I will hesitate commenting on Norman's list --- except to say, I agree with his #1. My favorite also. Would also have tried to fit in Street Legal and Time Out of Mind. Of course, likely in a Top 20.

In early 1980's interviews, the Bobster stated that his favourite is Shot of Love. There is a two minute KZitem posting of the interviews, less than 90 thousand views, so its relatively obscure.

I've listened to those interviews and IIRC he doesn't explicitly say it's his favourite. He was asked what was his favourite but he answered "an overlooked album is Shot of Love". So he definitely thinks it's underrated.

We have the same tastes in many ways. Certainly The Byrds, and I would most definitely add THE BAND. I became really connected to The Beatles post "SGT. Pepper". But the LP that really cemented Dylan as my most favorable performer was "John Westly Harding". And yes, "Slow Train Coming" was and is a valued lp.

I'm pretty much with you on most of that. I have a hard time deciding which is the "number 1" Dylan album between "Blood on the Tracks" and "Blonde on Blonde". They're both masterpieces. So I guess it depends on which day. Or which one you have on the turntable at the moment. 😄 The only one you have on your list that I can't relate to, oddly enough, is "Love and Theft". I like virtually everything Bob does, but I don't like that one for some reason, and I can't explain why. The songs just don't "click" with me, except for "Mississippi", which I really love. And I gather that "Mississippi" was from previous outtakes prior to all the other stuff he did on "Love and Theft". So, whatever he was into on that record, I just can't seem to relate to it, although most serious Dylan aficionados seem to love it. It's a mystery to me why that is, but no worries.... I would have put "Street Legal" very high on your list, in fact I'd put it among my favorite 6 or 7 Dylan albums. It's one of the ones I still listen to most frequently. I also really like a lot of the stuff on Empire Burlesque, although I know a lot of people object to the "80's production" sound. I first became aware of Bob due to his writing...that is, through various folk artists doing covers of his songs, and most of all through Joan Baez doing his songs. I was a huge Joan Baez fan and had all her records from the first one in 1960 and on from there. The songs she did that I loved best were the Dylan songs. I also heard Dylan songs being covered by Judy Collins, Ian & Sylvia, and various other singers, and they really got my attention. I thought, "Whoever this guy is, he's an amazing songwriter." But I didn't actually listen to Dylan himself doing any of his songs until he did "Like a Rolling Stone", and that blew my mind, as the old saying goes. From then on I was a total Dylan fanatic and bought every record he made. So although my roots were definitely in acoustic folk, I quickly made the transition to folk-rock and electric music, due to Dylan. And he also opened my mind toward a lot of the rock groups like the Stones, the Beatles, Hendrix, the Band, etc. Regarding "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands".......a lot of the lines and verses in that song do sound like they are about Joan Baez. And they may be. She clearly thought the song was about her. Bob later said in the song "Sara" that he had written "Sad-Eyed Lady" to his wife, Sara Lowndes. Well, that may be. Or it could be that it's about both Sara and Joan, depending on which lines and in which verses. Only Bob knows for sure, and he tends to be close-mouthed about such things, which is probably wise. You are right that Joan Baez's double album "Any Day Now" is a wonderful record, probably the best collection of Dylan covers ever done by anyone. Anyway, for me Bob Dylan is the greatest songwriter (and one of the greatest singers) of all time. Definitely Number One in my estimation, and he has had a bigger influence on other professional musicians than anyone else in the last 60 years.

Hard to argue ablout Blonde on Blonde. My first Dylan concert was at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood in 1991 or 2. Blown away that I got Just Like a Woman AND Absolutely Sweet Marie AND I was 8 rows from him. John Wesley Harding is my second. My friends thought I was nuts listening to Dylan when they all loved Quiet Riot. But most of them saw the light, lol. Nice Ranking!!

"Bringing It All Back Home" is Dylan's finest. "Blonde on Blonde" gets a little "thin" at some points, IMO. I really don't think "Blonde on Blonde" has more than 5 great songs (on a double album of 14 songs), while "Bringing It All Back Home" has 8 great songs and the 3 songs that aren't-so-great still have some fine moments. Cheers.

Love your passion for this music . I’m an audiophile too, but you have it right, music first, then the sound. Combine the great sound with great music and then it’s even more special and will get played more. I do still find it hard to play a terrible sounding record on my rig. I’d rather hear it on the radio where I can still get into but not worry about the sound.
