I love how you kept in the parts where you felt self-conscious! Have you read anything by Carol Shields? She won the Pulitzer for fiction in 1995 for The Stone Diaries, and won the Orange Prize in 1998 for Larry’s Party. I haven’t read either, but I recently read the last book she wrote before she died called Unless. It made the Booker shortlist in 2002, and I did enjoy it. When you do the year 2002 this one might be worth mentioning. It made me more interested in her other books and the Carol Shields prize for fiction created in 2020.

I had to laugh at your comment about John Green. My brother, whose daughter was a complete devotee of Green, once said "your best John Green will be your first John Green," and I can completely subscribe to that. I had no idea that Tender of the Flesh came out in 2017. I thought it was much newer than that! I actually just DNF'd The Power this last month...

Hi Shelly, I just have to share with you that Home Fire is one of those novels that will stay with me forever and I think you would love it. Also, This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel, which was on Steve's list, was my favorite book that I read in 2023. Wonderful story and beautiful writing. I'm going to reread it soon so I can pull out so many quotes that I absolutely loved. Thank you so much for your thoughtful videos!

Tea break & Shelly! I liked Sweet Bean Paste. I recently read another Japanese short book that had a Leprosy element to the story - The Samurai's Garden by Gail Tsukiyama. Completely different kind of story, but I liked it even more.

I'm enjoying your "by the years" series! For 2017, I've only heard of 3 books and read 2 of them - All Systems Red (wonderful!) and The Broken Sky (the best of that series, IMHO). None of the others even tweaked my interest, whereas I'd not just heard of but actually read most every book on your early 60s video. Maybe it's an age thing...

You might like the Last Mrs Parish. It’s smartly done, in my opinion, without giving too much away.

‘17 was the last year for me before I had my first child in 2018. I look back thinking why oh why did I not read a hundred books that year?! I did more than I can now still though

Lincoln in the Bardo is an amazing book, best on audiobook, I think. Anything is Possible is also amazing, I've listened to it twice. Home Fires and Exist West are two books on my shelves I need to read. I loved Sweet Bean Paste, great book. I really need to give The Heart's Invisible Furies a go, I find John Boyne a bit hit and miss for me. I also really need to read Sarah Winman's Tin Man, (published in the UK in 2017) have to borrow that from the library too.

❤️📚❤️ Another enjoyable video! I've read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Killers of the Flower Moon and really enjoyed both. I quickly went to Libby and placed audio for Sweet Bean Paste on hold (8 weeks wait). Thanks.

If you ever want to read more Sally Rooney I highly recommend her latest novel "Intermezzo". Mind you I'm a Sally Rooney fan, but I'd be the first to tell you that her 3 former books, while good and entertaining, suffer on the character department. But with Intermezzo she's finally nailed that modern Steinbeck-esque characterization of the normal people living and suffering their social and political context

Yeah! I love these videos!! I wasn’t all that thrilled about The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I didn’t like Little Fires Everywhere. I liked Eleanor Oliphant and I really liked Turtles All The Way Down. I liked The Alice Network also. I never wanted to read Pachinko. I love The Murder Bot series! The Code Breaker felt like a money grab. Walter Issacson is supposed to be a good author. I dnf’d Less. Lincoln of the Bardo is an all time favorite! It is a very challenging book to read. I didn’t like Hunger either. I never could get into Elizabeth Strout’s books . I am glad you liked The Hearts Invisible Fury. I DNF the book only because of the boy talk. His new book All The Broken Places is excellent! 5 stars. Great video!
