I use an iD22 for voice work, the ability to completely physically bypass the preamps was the deciding factor. This lets me use an external mic preamp of my choosing (Avalon M5). A lot of these interfaces only disable the internal preamp gain, but route an externally amplified signal through the internal preamp circuits. The iD22 lets you completely bypass the preamp circuitry entirely. It's one of those "probably marginal increases in quality" things ...

ON the voice I hear a minor difference, although I’m willing to bet that’s due to minor variances in the proximity to the mic. The guitar on the ID4 had a more well defined high end. On the piano, the evo 4 sounded ever so slightly muddier in the low mids. Very close, and for $120 or $130, the evo 4 is quite impressive.

I'm an audio engineer (for whatever that's worth in Internet Land), and the main difference I hear on voice was definitely a variation in mic placement. It almost sounded like the mic was in a different part of the room between the two recordings. The line inputs and the DI comparisons were more fair. I agree, it's definitely splitting hairs, especially in this segment of the interface market. Microphones, in particular, are where a would-be recordist should sink more of their money, all things being equal.

One of the best comprehensive and honest reviews I have seen in a while. As I got back into music, I was on an intro/broke-producer-budget, just trying to see if I was serious again, so I got a Behringer. It served it's purpose, especially for the price, but as I upgrade other things, Audient gear has come highly recommended. I have a small home studio. I went to check out a friend at his studio. 23 years in the business, he turned a full 2 car garage into a home studio. A lot of top of the line equipment. I sat down to check out his everyday work "interface", it's an Evo 8. I look at him and he says, " Trust me, get you one. I use it more for recording, than I do my high dollar equipment". This video is helping with my decision. Thanks!

Audient definitely has the some of the best preamps and A/D converters out there in the lower end interfaces. The ID14 is certainly comparable to a lot of the sub 1000 dollar units. And the ID4 is pretty similar just with less I/O. The ID22 however is one I suggest staying away from. They tend to stop working after a year or two and overheat. I've seen tons and tons of people on here as well as forums complaining about it. Audient has never come out and addressed these issues either so I can't say if they ever fixed them or not. I was going to spring for the ID14 a few months back but ended up getting an Apollo Twin for the plugins. But I definitely would choose it over the 2i2 I've been using for a few years.

Listening to the differences on very decent set up with analytical headphones - the ID 4 seems more balanced across the frequency range with a bit more detail in the higher frequencies vs the Evo, which seems to have more of a bump in the low mid's giving the Evo a "warmer" tone. I actually prefer the sound of the Evo but I think the ID 4 is probably more accurate when it comes to music production and mixing. The differences aren't night and day but they are there - both are great entry level interfaces imho - I used to own the ID 14 and it punches well above it's price - I don't think you can go wrong with either of these at this price - hope this helps :)

@@geraldundone I agree with the headphone jack on the back. Not a great location. My workaround if I upgrade my old interface would be to route an aux extension under my desk and mount it under at the front. That might even be a cleaner setup than having it run over your desktop. The 4k switch adds some harmonic distortion in the higher frequencies. Adds a bit of hype to the mix. I believe it emulates Solid State Logic's old, legendary 4000 series console. I highly suggest Podcastage's review over the unit! He tests it on quite a few mics and compares it to the Motu M2 as well.

For a bit of long term experience as well: between myself and a few people I know, 4/5 Audient iD4 have failed in some way either in a few months or in a year or two. Just a word of caution to those looking to buy it, Audient took 10 weeks to solve my issue, so their support isn't the greatest either. I now own an iD14, no major issues so far... knock on wood. Additionally, I'd also want to add that the iD4 uses the same console preamp DESIGN as their high end consoles, not everything is the same under the hood.

And furthermore: I've never read novels much. Much less novels about killer viruses. That I really don't find novel whatsoever. But this video was. And so in closing. What this video basically says. And what I recommend also to most entry level folk. Home recording enthusiasts. You purchase the interface. That has controls laid out. The way it works for you best in your head. Not what the sales guy tells you. As the latest greatest newest released thing. May not be that for you. It might be last year's model. Or their first release from years earlier. That suits you best. And that's also how I set up my home clients. What do they want or not want to see in their interface. How simple or feature laden. Must I decide for equipment. For my home clients. And their level of technical proficiency and/or desires, technically. The only thing that matters in the end. Is, how well you utilize the device. How far can you push its envelope. Before your recording begins to suffer. With horrible entry level amateur wannabe engineers. That all over think this stuff terribly. Because it's technical. But engineers like myself don't play these technical items technically. We play these technical items, musically. In a creative process. And it's our knowledge, experience, skills, technique. That makes things sound really cool. Not the equipment itself per se. So this was a lovely video demonstration and very good audio information. He saying it doesn't make a damn. And well that is absolutely correct. I've heard all of these portable USB audio interface devices. I certainly have my favorites. But I don't really care what I use. As long as it has the amount of inputs I need. Usually a minimum of between 8 and 16 or more. Things get a little different when you need that many. So do you blow your money on the finest analog to digital converters and the affordable audio console/microphone preamps/equalizers? Or do you go for the finest sounding microphone preamps, equalizers and consoles. And scrimp on the multitrack computer audio interface device? Yes! Absolutely yes! That's because. That even lousy first generation, 16-bit, 44.1 kHz input devices. Will still retain the character and quality sound. Those input sources develop. And no one will care. But they'll know what they're listening to. And it ain't no entry level mixer. No. It's an $85,000, in 1970, dollars, custom audio Neve console built, for NBC-TV. That I already had been using for 12 years. When it was made available to me. And I mean cheap. For a song. It took my breath away. I nearly fainted. It doesn't matter what you get yourself started with. You just have to learn how to use it correctly. And you can make beautiful professional recordings on virtually anything that passes audio. In fact I believe that's what makes me a great engineer. And I am a great engineer. It was starting with all of those garbage consumer items back in the, 60s and early 1970s. YES I'M THAT OLD! And the cheap stuff available today. So outperforms any of that stuff I also made some lovely recordings with. So moral of the story kids. If you make a crappy recording with your audio interface. It's not the fault of your audio interface. It really isn't. It's what's known as operator error and inexperience. Nothing to be afraid or ashamed of. It's how you learn. Making nice musical recordings is fun RemyRAD

Valandized I just switched from the 204hd to the evo 4 the only thing I miss is the ability to control the volume of both my monitors and headphones I forgot how convenient that was. But I’m happily sticking with the evo because my output both headphones and monitors sounds clearer as for the mic preamps... the Midas ones vs the evo 4 I would say isn’t far off sounds different but both maintain clear clarity the evo 4 sounds a little warmer, but the 204hd slightly just ever so slightly clearer. Oh the hardware isn’t as well made as the 204s those feel way more durable. You’ll definitely notice that. If you like manual control. And don’t care too much about headphone output and monitor playing at same time. Stick to the 204 but for me definitely the evo 4. Or I’ve heard rumours of the coming soon evo 8 not having that issue of auto muting. So maybe. Hold another month it’s not that much more, at least not in U.K.

@@sharma673 Thanks for the feedback Sharma! Actually, I do like all those nice features and multiple outputs on the 204HD, which is why I've been holding back for such a long time. Since I got my DT990's I must say I'm not quite satisfied with the sound output of the headphone amp. For this reason I've started looking around for something better, but not too expensive and with comparable features. I haven't found a replacement yet, not a cheap one at least. I saw a video about the Motu M2 having one of the best headphone amps, on top of good mic pre-amps. Do you know if the Evo 8 will be comparable to the 204HD?

Valandized Hey y/w in terms of inputs yes but in terms of usability and individual dials I’m afraid not. At least not until a newer version of the 204hd comes out which I have no idea when. But I completely agree with headphone output. Personally that’s the only issue I’ve had with the 204hd. I know that focusrite can power the dt 770 and 990 just fine but the Midas preamps sounds way better than focusrite. This was the reason why I went with the evo 4. As much as I prefer manual dials and love my Behringer. What matters most was input and output. For better mixing balancing and fine tuning even if I have to press one too many dials. I do want the evo 8 though for one main reason. It has two headphone outputs great for recording artist whilst monitoring. Let me know if you come across a Behringer competitor for the price. ☺️

I can't decide between the EVO-4, Motu M2, or the M-Audio Air 192/6! I think I'm certain about midi I/O but, how necessary is it for sequencers/synthesizers?

I just have to say, you are really talented. Great video, great voice, and great detail! So I have the GoXLR Mini, but dislike it due to the lack of XLR inputs. Would the EVO 8 be a good replacement, or a great addition to the GoXLR Mini? Thanks man.

Enjoyed your review, however I use a Behringer Xenyx QX1002USB with my iMac Pro. Seems to work pretty well.

the price in thomann is just 1€ more in the iD4. I'm using my iD4 heavily for two years already and I couldn't be happier with the size/price/quality. 119€ and if you don't need the two preamp inputs beats any other audio interface in that price range.

Enjoying your videos. If you only needed the interface for voiceover and video, would these still be the interfaces you recommend?

The ID4 is a bit more forward in the upper mids vs the evo4. More low end on the evo. Both sound great!

audient makes always awesome stuff! I love evo4's simple appearance and quality of sounds. Hope you can get a MOTU M2 and get a chance to compare to audient stuff. Thanks. I'm considering buying MOTU M2 which is overestimated than audient product.

I’ve considered both for a purchase and was leaning towards the Evo 4, but the ID4 sounded a bit better in all examples, especially the guitar. But, the ID4 isn’t iOS compatible. Argh. Good review!

I am listening on a Pass Labs amp... and the iD4 clearly wins on everything. I think it actually does have higher distortion, but it is by far more musical. Sometimes being perfect, is what those audio guys call 'clinical'... aka, florescent lights in a cold, sterile room... it doesn't matter if 'better,' it doesn't sound better.

Have you seen the Motu M2? I've got one on order and what I'm seeing looks great to me. I'd be interested in your input on that setup if you can get your hands on one.
