Camera schmaera. I shooting with Nikonos V and/or a Nikonos III. These were the best dive cameras in the day. I'm not shooting deep so I don't need the lights. So far no leaks. On price point I've never spent more than a $175 for a Nikonos V and not more than $70 for a Nokonos III. I shoot both with a 35mm lens which translates to around 50mm under water. They are film cameras. I think Nikon missed the boat not taking Nikonos digital. I have considered shooting a d810 or a d850 but the housing (those that work) goes for about a third or more than the camera. The other cost if you're going deep is lights again about a quarter or more the cost of the camera. I'm not inclined to spend money to light up my Nikonos. Occasionally I have used a fenix dive flashlight. Not great, but not bad. The main thing about the Nokonos is I have to think about each shot. I can shoot color film; if Ektachrome stays around transparencies. I have no problem shooting film or digital, each has their own aesthetic.

For the GoPro, there's many companies that make "triggers" to push the shutter button/make taking photos/videos easier/faster UW. I can only speak to the KNEKT gear -- "dive trigger" & dome -- that I have & it's a great setup! You even have spaces to put "arms" & lights. Like a proper dive housing rig.

You forgot to mention the most important gear for underwater photography which is artificial light. For photos you need strobes and for video you need strong flashlights otherwise your images will end up blueish or greenish and without contrast the deeper you go no matter how good the dynamic range of your camera is. Red colors are the first to disappear at around 2 meters and then goes yellow colors. Even the best dynamic range sensors cannot capture color that are not present. I use the Nikon D500 with Ikelite housing and two Ikelite strobes.

Excellent video. My issue with full frame underwater camera is the size of the housing. Full frame housings are enormous in size. Traveling and handling them on a commercial dive boat with strangers is not fun, to say the least. The smallest and most advanced (for its size) APS-C camera is Sony a6600. It has excellent battery life, but an old sensor. I am only interested in photography and I do not care about video. I wonder how this camera will perform underwater when shooting RAW. Another small factor camera I am considering is Olympus EM1 Mark II. Olympus EM 5 Mark III has a terrible battery life. Changing batteries on a dive boat is asking for trouble, not to mention increasing the risk of lens getting foggy. However, the Olympus EM1 is a micro 4/3 sensor camera(3 years old), it is larger and it costs more as the new Sony a6600 . Since you state to go for a bigger sensor, I do not have any more options (small housing and good battery life is a must).

For filming, the Sony a7s III is more suitable than the r III - perhaps the most suitable. I have filmed with it's predecessor and it is a brilliant bit of kit - the new one seems even better. Best lenses for that depend on what you want to do, but for general use, i'd say either the 12-24 or the 16-35 for wide zoom lenses. If you want to do macro, i don't really know.

Hey! Yeah, that's kind of a separate video, all those questions! But f you have a 1 inch sensor compact camera, there are housings that support a sort of 'screw on' lens to the port (for example the Inon i mention). Fantasea do an affordable version of both housing and screw on wide angle.

I have a Mk1 Sony RX100 bought for scuba, not freediving. These are now about £250-£300 in the UK. Matched with Sony's own cheap housing for a total of about £500. The RX100 mk1 and 2 have slightly wider lenses than the later marks, plus you can attach wet wide angle and macro lenses from the likes of Inon to many housings. I have an Inon macro lens (maybe buying a wide angle soon). I use it with an Inon D2000 strobe for photos. Shoot in RAW, get close (and then closer) to the subject, make sure the shot is in focus and not over-exposed, and sort out white balance etc in post.

Hi Daan, Fantastic video, super helpful. I currently use the TG-4, and while it is an amazing camera for the price, I find I am frustrated by the lack of manual control (I went to photography school back before digital, so not having manual was a bit of an oversight). Also, I freedive on Vancouver Island and so light is an issue at depth, a larger sensor would help, as you have already stated. I like to shoot freedivers, sealions, and the smaller bits and pieces like anemone etc. With the TG-4 I have resorted to bringing a strobe with me, but I miss natural light. My question, after quite a preamble, is if I upgraded to the A7r iii, what success do you think I would have if i ditched the strobes? Do you have any examples of low light photos with your set up?

Once you've put a housing around them, it makes less of a difference - though the smaller ones are definitely easier to travel with and carry to the sea. In the water, the difference is much less noticeable, and for video there's actually a slight benefit to having something bulkier, as it makes for smoother moves.

I gather that your budget numbers are based on the purchase of the camera only, not the whole system for underwater photography?!? You mentioned the Nikon D500 in the $1500 - $2000 range, the body alone is $1800; add the lens and you're already over $2000. Now we need the housing which start at about $1500 for the Ikelite up to over $3000 for a Sea & Sea, Nauticam or comparable; add the required ports and adapters ($500 - $2000), and we're at a baseline of about $4000 up to $7500. This doesn't include any lighting yet so budget another $700 - $1500 for a reasonable lighting setup to compliment the other equipment and you're easily into this for at least $5000, more likely around $8000-$10000. So, while your analysis looks good for the low end, GoPro, compacts, etc... I think you need to include the whole picture (no pun intended) when you talk about the budget for a higher end system.

Ill search through your vids see if youve covered this. But as a budding UW photographer/videographer I invested a $$$$$ in video lights, still not clear on the advantage of strobe lights.... Is it true they're are 1000x more powerful and also freeze your subject through sudden short burst of light for a fraction of the shutter opening? Does that mean I can light up a say large ship 10m...20m away much better with a strobe than a video light? Im interested in more natural colours 30m deep.. nice contrast.. sharp focus.. Im on the 6500 + seafrogs housing with dome, sigma 16mm f1.4, 2800lm bigblue video lifghts x 2 on long arms. I find the video lights make eveything red often, and of course scene in distance is still green.. all around not pleasing colours.. do you use slog2 uw?
@originalkk882
5 жыл бұрын
The range of a strobe is very short, no more than a few metres. It is there to bring back the colours lost at depth. If shooting wide angle you need to get very close to the subject (and position the strobe head carefully) to eliminate backscatter when the strobe fires. It's not relevant for video of course.

tough call - the Gopro has much better video, but i prefer taking photos with the Olympus. I reckon most people would be happier with the gopro, though. The trick with taking photos on the gopro is to put it in burst, say 5 shots in 1 second, or 10 shots in 3, so that you don't get the blur from pressing the shutter. Shoot in raw to get the best out of the photo in editing, and with plenty of light you'll be able to get nice results from the gopro.

Underwater, free-diving images could be so much more impressive and beautiful and alive. That's a matter of a camera u using, dynamic range it can capture. Have you ever tried film cameras, Black Magic or Arri cameras?

how strange! Of course your taste i can't argue with - though luckily enough people disagree with you so that i can make a living as a photographer - but your comment regarding the dynamic range and flatness of my photos and my camera are objectively wrong. The Sony i'm using has one of the greatest dynamic ranges of all photo cameras: check for yourself on DxO. But to say such trollish things about my work and then to ask me a question is quite bizarre. If you can do better than me - i'm sure that's possible - i'd like to see it.
