One (dis)advantage of a controlled build fixed at rl 150 is that you won't have to worry about losing Runes.

Very good point. Gameplay-wise, not having to worry about losing runes is a good thing. Since leveling will not be affected, it is one less burden to bear. That said, it will still be good to have runes so that we can buy weapons, items and materials. The feeling won't be completely lost, but it will be a bit less punishing as it does not control our power level. Thank you for your comment.

I am going into the DLC at level 301 just enough to meet the status requirements of all weapons and spells cos I want to be able to try out as many of the dlc weapons as possible. When it comes to difficulty balancing I’m not worried since Miyazaki already stated there would be a different leveling system in the dlc to balance it out anyway. On top of that I will be using lower leveled variants of my fav base game weapons and will be trying to stick to using mostly all the new weapons. First time I fight bosses I will also not be using buffs or the spirit summons. All of that combined will make for a very fun first experience I think
@FrownyGaming

Miyazaki did say that. At this time, we don't really have much information on the system itself so we can't really now how it will balance. That said, what you described is a good way to maximize the possibility of using everything that you find so it should lead to the most varied playthrough of all. There is merit in trying this. It seems that you have given this a lot of thought. Let me know how it goes. Thank you for your comment.

@ausi6758

The only difference between something like a lv.150 build and an overleveled build are the amount of options you'll have, not power level, especially if you have your overleveled character on ng+7. That on top of the fact that there will be a new leveling system in which lower levels will probably need it while higher levels are free to ignore it, giving a new sense of balance.

While I agree that going for a NG+7 playthrough with a max level character does normalize the difficulty to some extent, I do not like the idea of trying out brand new content at such a high NG cycle. I prefer to run new content at regular NG to see what the intended experience is and then, if necessary, adjust from there in subsequent playthroughs. For this reason, my preferred run is RL150 at regular NG. Thank you for your comment.

I really want to stay under 125 or 150 but Fromsoft sadly deleted my favorite archetype in Elden Ring. You can't do a hexer Faith Int, most debuffs in the game are tied to strength/dex weapons or pure faith (greathorn, Milos sword), int faith spells are rather damage oriented rather than hex-like. There is only a spear enchant and a sword scaling with int/faith so you are kind of pivoted into spells. All in all, I think I will do a 60 vig, 40/40 int faith, rest into Mind build whose main damage will be Radagon Ring - Ghostflame explosion - Magma shot. Will have access to basically all powerful buffs so even though I can't hex, I can bless at least. Also will use small crossbow, poison, stealth and ambushes (using darkness before casting anything, just as useful in PvE and PvP, for example). I despise the idea that DEX increases cast speed, I think Mind should increase cast speed xd so I won't invest into that. Adds a layer of difficulty, which I can live with.
@FrownyGaming
3 ай бұрын
If it makes you feel better, the extra casting speed is useful for spamming spells that chain into themselves but, generally speaking, does not make much of a different when using the larger guns. I have multiple caster-type characters in this channel and not once have I prioritized casting speed. My solution was just to improve my casting opportunities through better positioning. Now, as for hexes... I got flashbacks of Dark Souls two and how powerful they were back then. They deserve to be back in full glory. If it interests you, I made this build for an INT/FTH omnicaster: kzitem.info/news/bejne/k2qtwKFun6yYgJg Hopefully it helps. Thank you for your comment.

My build will be on the controlled side. But also, my only fear so far is letting too many NPC's die. Some go inevitably, who I'll keep anonymous to avoid spoilers. However, Millicent, Alexander, Sir Gideon, or even Melina might be summonable, as were NPC's in Bloodborne: The Old Hunters. In preparation for that, I'm building around buff skills, sorceries, and/or whatever else doesn't involve killing NPC's off.
@FrownyGaming

I have to say, playing to babysit the NPC's sounds stressful. I tend to not summon them to fights, and just deal with their questlines outside of battle. But it is a first playthrough. With no prior knowledge, more than one of them will be messed up. Thank you for your comment.

I’m wanting to try out as many different weapons as I can, so I’m aiming to have a Quality build that will allow me access to good damage on each weapon. I’m also considering your Quality Arcane build in your Berserker video and whether or not I want a large Arcane investment. At least for a first play through, I want to try out a lot of things, so I’ll need some spread out stats to achieve anything beneficial. I’m still trying to decide on whether to just focus on one damage stat (Strengh, or maybe Arcane) and then just meeting the requirements for items as I go along, or maximizing physical damage (Str/Dex) and just adding in cosmetic stats for meeting weapon types. With so many new weapon types, I’m favoring physical damage over spells in the blind play through.

I agree with this. Going for a Quality build would allow you to try many different things during your first playthrough. Even if the build turns out to be weaker than a specialized character, the difference should not be so much that it would ruin the experience. I've been pondering this for a while now and i remember asking you to help craft a build that is a jack of all trades. I was inspired by your "wild heart" build, but i wanted to see how much further i can push it. The best jack of all trades build i could make at 150 is as follows (with Godrick's rune + both soreseals and silver tear mask): Vig 60 Mind 30 End 30 Str 34 Dex 40 Int 42 Fth 36 Arc 45 I know, 2 soreseals!! To counteract the damage penalty, I have the beast champion altered chest piece, ronin leggings and battle mage manchettes (53 poise!), together with the dragoncrest greatshield talisman you get 22 physical damage nagation! the last talisman slot is for utility like max cast speed with radagon icon, but i can also equip the drake +2 for 22 negation for any specific affinity if needed. Not to mention, i can cast defence buffs like black flame protection for further def boost. With proper physic choices and minor equipment/talisman switches i can basically equip any spell/weapon in the game! It is not an optimized build by any means, but a jack of all trades is not supposed to be optimized as it is the master of none. My casting tools of choice are the dragon communion seal and albinauric staff, both reach over 320 spell scaling, which results in decent damage. My main weapon of choice is Mohg's spear as it is one of the best weapons and it makes use of many of my stat investments. This character is at normal NG, so I think I can manage with non optimized builds just fine. I prefer prioritizing the flexibility of using almost anything i find in the DLC without being OP with an overleveled build thats is also opyimized for everything.

I am going with a controlled build too. Level 125 pure strength, wielding a heavy Iron Cleaver (S-scaling in STR). This build is mainly centered around the weapon's fully-charged R2 + Royal Knight's Resolve. My secondary will most likely be a cold Gargoyle Twinblade.

Iron cleaver is such a powerful, underrated weapon. The charged R2, which tracks the target, and Royal Knights Resolve does so much damage. I had a build that used magic damage and it was a monster.

Very solid. Iron Cleaver adds a lot of value to any Strength build. Focusing on it's R2 with Royal Knights Resolve will give you incredible single hit damage. Good for bosses. I hope it works out for your. Thank you for your comment.

@@riflesmcknight9456 Powerful and underrated are absolutely accurate. My preferred builds, even going back from Dark Souls 1 & 3, have always been dex-focused. I like fast-hitting weapons. In Elden Ring, that means power-stanced curved swords or straight swords, cold infused. However, when I finally tried the Iron Cleaver, I got addicted instantly lol. The fact that you can dance/weave around the enemies' attack as you are charging your heavy attack, I never realized how useful that was. Also, being able to deal 2,200+ damage on a single fully-charged R2 (without extra body or aura buffs) just makes me grin every time.

You raise all valid points. Miyazaki said there will be a nerf so that all rune levels will start at (or near) the same difficulty level. Also, mentioned a leveling mechanic similar to that of sekiro. . I think he could have elaborated more on the nerf, and how leveling will apply to stats. We have no idea how much stronger a 713 will be to a 150. This would inform the player on how to tailor the experience

I have seen the information about the new leveling system akin to the Power Level system in Sekiro. I think this is a good idea. That said, what do you mean by "nerf" and "all rune levels with start at (or near) the same difficulty level". I have not read anything about purposely lowering the strength of characters based on their Rune Level. I think this would be a bit too much. Thank you for your comment.

@@FrownyGaming I had to reread the three interviews Miyazaki has done, and it appears that I have misconstrued an aspect about the leveling mechanic (a possible rune level nerf) that probably wont exist. So i do appologize sincerely I have to add: I was recently talking to someone about their DLC build and they said they were leveling INT FTH and ARC incase there new spells to try, which is smart. But it got me thinking, alot of weapons scale in with these stats: how does the Sekiro mechanic increase attack power in weapons that favor these stats? Does the mechanic only increase attack power of physical AR, or is it a broad increase over multiple stats?

I don't want to be overpowered, but I also want to be able to try out as much of the new content the DLC has to offer on my first run without needing to respec too often. With that in mind, I'm thinking of using a RL200 build with a fairly even stat spread. Something like: 60 Vig 25 Mind 25 End 40 Str 40 Dex 40 Int 40 Fth 9 Arc I'm hoping with that stat spread I should meet the stat requirements for the majority of new stuff without being super op. I decided to leave arcane at base, as if the DLC is anything like main game there will be fewer items with arcane requirements. I have several RL150 characters and I kind of want my first playthrough to serve as a tutorial for future playthroughs, and being able to experiment with as many new tools as possible will be great for that. Since strength gets a 1.5x multiplyer when two-handing I'm strongly considering lowering that a little and putting more into faith and intelligence. As the DLC focuses on Miquella, I get the feeling there's going to be more Fth/Int weapons and incantations.

My character is something in between. It is about lvl. 160 with these stats: Vigor: 55 Mind: 17 End: 32 Str: 36 Dex: 40 Int: 25 Faith: 25 Arc: 11 It is not optimized, since it has a pretty wide stat spread. I mainly focused on defense since I don't want to be able to burst the bosses down, but be forced to learn them a little before I beat them. I mostly will run a melee character, that's why I am also mostly levelling Str and Dex, while the points in Int and Faith will allow me to use spells and split scaling weapons. This will also allow me to use most weapons in the DLC, which I am looking forward to. It is by default on the weaker side when it comes to pure power, but I know how, if I need to, to make my character very powerful. Alongside survivability, utility will be the second big focus of the build. There is such an insane variety cool, useful and fun items, consumables, abilities and weapons in the game, and switching between them has been the most fun way to go through the game for me. Sure I'll be able to find responses to most challenges in my toolset, but for me Elden Ring is as much of an RPG as an action game, and using that side to the fullest will be a lot of fun.

However, I plan to start the DLC with my lv 125 full dex samurai - In all my NG+ playthroughs, I seemed to enjoy the limitations with that the most, i.e. sticking to greases etc. Like you said, there will be lots of opportunities in further playthroughs to respec and try out other weapons and builds, but there is only one first time. 😀

I'm going to perfect my build, by that I mean finishing Millicent's questline for the rotten winged sword insignia, get both my weapons to +25 and grab a few more talismans, but aside from that now that I've beat Mohg I'm just going to get the rest of the gear I want and run straight to the end of the game and level up naturally from the rest of the bosses that are in the way. I want to feel sufficiently stacked, but I'm not going to go out of my way to make my character completely OP

Great video - I haven't watched anything else on Shadow of the Erdtree, but something about your thumbnail and title lured me in; and it was exactly what I thought it'd be. Going to check out your channel now! Based on what you've said, I think I'll go in with my high-level 'main' character for flexibility, but maybe quickly/immediately only use drops from within the DLC itself, to prevent being too overpowered. Personally, high health with low/moderate damage seems like the most fun for learning boss patterns, etc. (and good choice of background with the early spoiler-free boss fights - maybe you do it regularly with your videos, but it was nice to watch while you talked)

First and foremost, welcome to the channel! You are going to find a lot of content about builds, making builds and in-game mechanics. The objective is to give players as much knowledge as possible so that they can tip the scales of difficulty in their favor. Do not hesitate to drop me a comment if you have any questions. In regards to your plan for the DLC, I think it is a good one. Going in with a high-leveled character, but limiting yourself to using DLC-only equipment will be a good way to balance the experience and maximizing the aspect of discovery. As for the background footage, I do not always put early-game bosses. In fact, this is an exception. I normally have footage of late-game areas for the builds, or whatever bosses I get summoned to help with (usually the late-game ones). I hope you enjoy the rest of the content. I recommend that you watch this video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/y65_yYJvk559aKQ Warped Axe is a very good weapon that has good synergies with STR/ARC. You can run a very good Bleed Warped Axe, with the build up of Greataxes, or you can build an Occult Warped Axe, that takes advantage of what I call "Quality Occult", which gives you good scaling with both stats. You could go 56 STR, 45 ARC and two Warped Axes: one bleed and one occult. Then you use whichever one fits the enemy best. This would also give you access to dragon incantations with a relatively small Faith investment. I think this can make a very good sword and board build that still gives you a lot of incantations support. Let me know how it works for you. Thank you for your comment.

Hey Frowny, I'm currently working on a character centered around the godslayer's greatsword and so far have the minimum requirements met to use it but I'm not sure if i should start putting more points in dex and faith or strength and dex and some more points into faith. What stats should prioritize first?
@HonestOpinions4u
3 ай бұрын
Depends.. are you using the ash of war constantly or using the entire weapon? If its the latter dex would give you the most damage as it scales off dex primarily (for some odd reason) if youre mainly using it for the ash of war then faith and maybe some strength as fire damage scales off of strength albeit not as much as the faith since its only a D rating in strength
@FrownyGaming
3 ай бұрын
So... the Godslayer's Greatsword +10 has a D-STR (55), B-DEX (100), C-FTH (72) scaling. As such, you want to prioritize Dexterity and Faith. While both stats increase the damage of the weapon, Faith also provides a considerable boost to the Ash of War damage. It has 20 STR / 22 DEX / 20 FTH requirements. That said, you can have 14 Strength and still use the weapon effectively if you two-hand it. As such, I would keep Strength at a minimum and then push Dexterity and Faith to their corresponding second soft-caps. 14 STR / 56 DEX / 50 FTH, if you are two-handing /OR/ 20 STR / 56 DEX / 50 FTH, if you want to use it with one hand. Personally, I would two-hand the weapon and save myself 6 points; but there is merit in one-handing the sword and having an incantation seal in the offhand. Let me know what you prefer. Thank you for your comment.

I would say if you are looking a for a controlled character you should probably not go up to 150. The difference between 150 and 100 is not that much. At RL 100 you would have hit 40 Vigor, you would have hit the second soft cap of your main damage stat, and have some leftover stats for your endurance, mind or some spell stats for some utility. At RL 150 the difference between builds gets muddied and the controlled aspect is not really there
@FrownyGaming

I disagree with this. The difference between RL100 and RL150 (50 levels) is huge. RL100 is even lower than the established level for PvP (120-125). The reason why I like RL150 is because it feels natural. If you play through the game from start to finish at a natural pace, experience all of the content, a character should between RL140-160 when they beat it. I settled on RL150 as it is a comfortable middle ground. This allows me to maximize my damage, set up multiple defenses, but still be forced to pick a build type. RL150 is very strong, but it cannot do everything. I think that this is very important, specially for a new experience. Thank you for your comment.

@@FrownyGaming Thanks for the reply. Of course you play the way you wanna play and it is not the wrong way to play. But imo because of Soft caps the difference is minimal. At RL 100 you can easily have 51 poise (any amount of poise you have between 51 and 101 is meaningless), 1000 hp, FP and stamina (Elden ring is extremely generous with how much starting FP, Stamina and Stamina Regen you get), you would have hit 15 faith for flame grant me Strength and you would have hit the second soft cap for you damage stat. 50 levels on paper sound like a lot but it truly isn’t when you consider soft caps. I would also agree with you that RL 125 is the established meta for pvp but that is because of how important poise and carrying capacity is in pvp and not that much in pve. I do not disagree with the premise of the video but more so the cutoffs of which category is which

After going through your comment, I want to clarify something. Are you insinuating that 1000 HP is enough to go into a FromSoft DLC which, from experience with past FromSoft DLC's, we have the understanding that it will be equated to late-game strength? Furthermore, as an example, I rolled a RL100 Hero character. 60 Vigor, 56 Strength and 15 Faith. That is exactly RL100. This character only has 9 Mind and 12 Endurance, equating to 75 FP, 99 Stamina and a total equip load of 51.4 units (35.98 units being the 70% cutoff). Do you believe that this would be an adequate build for, once again, a presumably late-game level DLC? The additional 50 RL would allow you to increase FP, equip load, and then dabble in any other Stat that you want (probably FTH to 25 for Golden Oath). As I mentioned before, playing the game naturally, from start to finish, would bring an average player to RL140-160 upon completion. RL150 sets a comfortable middle ground that allows players to have agency, comfort, and maintains the build's identity. Even at RL150, sacrifices must be made. I am not here to judge how you want to play the game. Far from it. But the question is: Do you believe that your favored RL100 policy is good for the vast majority of players that will pick up the DLC? Is this truly a sound piece of advise? 1000 HP is going to get most of the Elden Ring population one-shotted.
@happyrogue768

@@FrownyGaming The first one is a mistake on my part. I do stand behind the 40 vigor I just misremembered how much that equates to which is 1450. So yeah, I do not think a 1000 HP is enough, for which I appologise. But I stand behind the RL 100 late game build as I have made 10 builds some even being RL 90 as preparation for the DLC and testing them by beating all of the late game bosses plus Malenia. All of them have 40 vigor. This is a bit of a nitpick but you should probably not have more thean 54 STR (55 if you are one-handing the weapon). You do not need 25 faith for any build that doesnt focus around incantations. The extra 10 point in Faith are not worth it just ot get Golden Vow when you can just slap the Golden Vow AoW on a dagger. As an Example here is the RL 90 STR build: 40 Vigor 9 Mind 23 END 54 STR 10 DEX 7 INT 15 Faith 11 ARC Right Hand - Nightrider Glaive (Braggard's Roar), Dagger (Golden Vow) Left Hand - Highland Axe, Dragon Communion Seal Armor - Radhan's Helm, Radhan's Armor, Iron Gauntlets, Carian Knight Greaves Talismans - Roar Medalion, Axe Talisman, Arsenal Charm +1 (I was too lazy to get the Great Jar Talisman), Carian Filigreed Crest (So I can do the Buffs optimally in one rotation) 60 Poise, 31.358 Physical Resistance. Before I answer the question of if I would recommend that to the fast majorit of player, I never claimed that I recommend this to the vast majority of players, but to those that want an optimised build, which is piss easy to do at RL 100 as I have demonstrated with my RL 90 character. And again, I stand behind the 40 vigor, I just forgot that it is 1450 HP not 1000
@FrownyGaming

Alright. So we have different fundamental philosophies when playing this game. Nothing wrong with it, but we are looking at different things. So the HP thing is understood. 40 Vigor / 1450 HP is better. That being said, I have a hard time believing that 40 Vigor is "optimal". 60 Vigor increases the survival rate of any character by a considerable amount. We are talking about an extra 500 HP. Completely worth the 20 point investment. I see no reason why any player would leave this amount of HP on the table. The 54 STR I ask that you explain to me. Why stop at 54? The second Soft Cap for STR is 56 and, if you are interesting in two-handing the weapon, there is additional Strength scaling past 99, if needed. I am curious about this one, although one or two points up/down don't make a big difference. I actually really like what you posted for an invasion build. RL90 invasions are fun and I thing that this build would perform quite well. But for PvE, I think that there is more value that we can extract, while maintaining the essence of a Strength-type build. And then... probably the most subjective point, and the most insignificant, but I have to make it. The fashion you posted does not look very appealing. If I am running Shadow of the Erdtree for the first time, I want to look good doing it. In any case, I don't think that what you are saying is wrong. If any player wants to challenge themselves by lowering RL as much as possible, they would do well to follow your system.
