Folks like Cornelius and his family are why I'm confident we're gonna win better communities! And before folks despair at the state of their current communities, it's worth remembering he's right about going to local government officials. Local government isn't always easy to shift but it is WAY easier than trying to do change on state or federal levels of government. I just attended a long term planning meeting for my local government's transportation and land use planning and all the citizens there were pushing for more bike infrastructure and the county officials were pretty open to that. I even got assurances that "capacity expansion" on a road I use all the time would mean bike lanes not car lanes and some interest in reducing car speeds there. So we should all be like Cornelius! Boldly take the streets where we can now and use that experience to push local government to improve our communities. Ideally with our neighbors joining us!

Cornelius has outlined an intensely important aspect of community: access. Kids need to be able to access schools, libraries, and parks. Having a built environment that only works for cars places anyone under the age of sixteen at the mercy of someone else to access these parts of their community. We bought our suburban house in a walkable/bikeable area so that our child will be able to go places on her own. We've got a mostly safe route to the elementary school, two parks, and the high school. We don't have a safe route to the middle school or the library because the Greenway stops at the elementary school. They are going to add more lanes to the six lane intersection at just past the elementary school. Right now, the safest way to bike beyond the school is to ride on the sidewalk. My new goal is to try to get some infrastructure out of this road expansion. Kids need to be able to ride or walk to the library.

I admire Cornelius. I have been transporting kids and cargo in suburban Australia by bike for 20 years. Unfortunately my experience of doing this in isolation builds zero social and cultural capital. I am at the point where I resent being visible because I find it difficult to identify many incidents where I have helped people or contributed to the community. Actions speak louder than words and unfortunately there are far more instances where people have excluded our family because we don’t drive. Please keep up the good work and unfortunately the only choice is to live ina community with like minded people and legislators.

I am currently in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. The main importer for most brands of Cargo bike Dutch Cargo Bike is based in Melbourne. Melbourne has numerous transit oriented bike shops and ever expanding inner city cycleways. The main problem in Australia is the cost of real estate in the inner ring suburbs. I seems like inner ring is evolving towards transit, bikes and walk ability, middle ring electric cars and transit and outer ring electric suv. Anyone who bucks the trend in their planning ring is like a Quaker in an Amish town. Sections of Melbourne’s inner east has exceptional public transit and the metro style carriages are excellent for carrying bikes. I have also carried a Brompton on Melbourne trams

Looks like Dutch Cargo Bike is based in Moorabbin. So South East Melbourne. Don’t be shocked by the pricing. A Cargo bike usually pays for itself within a year if it replaces a car. I have never dealt with them personally. A Danish man set up a bit earlier in Melbourne and I dealt with him but Dutch Cargo cornered the market in the meantime. Also be prepared to move in and out of Cargo if you use them for family transit. My 18 year old daughter will rarely ride a bike but will not drive a car either so the general message of economic enslavement to the car industry is more important.

Thanks Karl. With a front loading cargo bike it is a case of reducing numbers as they get older. If you have seen Chris with his videographer you will know that many front loaders can carry a small adult. The American family of long tails that developed from xtracycle and Yuba can carry two larger children but this effects the front end handling. The Dutch also make family tandems, Onderwater was one example, but they are limited in cargo. Tern have really pivoted from folding to compact electric cargo in this space. There approach makes storage and transport easier and I feel the GSD or HSD are vehicles people are more likely to keep when their kids grow up. They are great commuters and grocery getters that fit easily in a garage, storage room or even hung under stairs. They also fit better in lifts if that is your need.

Honestly biking is super nice for a commute; I had a pretty chill day yesterday and decided I could go for a longer inline skating tour. Was getting on and off the main cycling path to check the streets out but kept bumping into the same lady. She told me I was pretty fast on my skate to always catch her even while doing loops and she was able to point me to a nice ice cream shop nearby. Ain't getting that in a car.

Another great video, keep them coming. I was the cargo bike dad in Torrance on a benno boost last year. It's now election season in Socal. There's a new council district in North Torrance. I reviewed the candidates webpages and watched 2 1/2 hours of forum speaking between the candidates to learn more about their thoughts on bikes / infrastructure. There was no discussion about bikes/infrastructure. I contacted the South Bay Bicycle Coalition SBBC+ to ask what could be done. They invited me into their organization and asked me to lead the effort. I sent a form letter via email w/ 4 questions to 10 candidates in 3 districts and 2 for the mayor, 9 replied and about 2/3 stated they wanted to work w/ SBBC to improve bike lanes in Torrance. We are now working w/ news organizations to get the word out. All that was done in one month. Join a group, advocate, talk to people.

@@Propelbikes That's the energy! Conventions aren't just for big industries anymore, start small but build it and they will come! There is such a demand for the right hands-on live platform to present ideas and products to the right people, especially now with the world slowly opening up again. Fully Charged Live was born from Robert inviting his friends and electrified brands who want to represent. Maybe hook up with his team or visit the next FCL and get some pointers. And I think "Propel" is already an insanely good brand name, symbolising moving forward people and all kinds of positive progressive ideas and projects. Hey Propel, you have definitely convinced me over several of our videos that the NYC area is my top spot to move to! I live in a decent college town that is friendly to pedestrians/bikers, but no one else really does it. Also, my friends just have various ways of screwing around with me to "grow up" and drive already, so it makes me feel unwanted or an outcast in my community. NYC looks like a bicycle haven with a strong community that supports these active lifestyles over driving everywhere, as Cornelius has shown us.

Such an amazing video! I'm from Europe myself, but I found this to be super exciting. I wonder what would happen if New York City actually sacrificed a couple of car-centric streets (remove cars and car parking completely) and replace those streets with wide walkways, wide and fast bicycle "motorways", greenery, playgrounds local shopping, food trucks etc. I bet the city would spring to life like never before. Traffic congestion would most likely drastically decrease since people would choose to walk or bike instead of using cars and cabs.

My family moved from the UK to the Netherlands when my kids were 10 & 13...As they could now safely make their own way to school & after school clubs by bike, it saved me hours of driving a week compared to the UK, where school car traffic is major cause of rush hour congestion & pollution. It should be emphasised that building universal high quality infrastructure is good for car drivers too. Car ownership in the Netherlands is similar to the UK's, it's just they use their cars less, & are more likely to cycle or walk short journeys.. This reduces congestion overall, with everyone benefiting.

We need to address issues with our local counsels to improve things. And it is indeed what you already said in another vid and Cornelius says now: those little interactions with other people while cycling is amazing! And people are more friendly most of the time while being outside of a car. Last Wednesday we were with 5 cargo bikes to drop off kids from different families and all different brands (baboe, R&M, gazelle, urban arrow and our own Carqon classic) We had a great talk together and even the some children where looking at the differences between the bicycles which was fun to hear 5-7yolds do. We have some work to do here in Belgium cities but some are doing a decent job.

We are definitely going to be early adopters, I don't think anyone in the area does this (or at least I've never seen them). Most it wouldn't be possible/would be very dangerous because our roads are not bike friendly. I live in Calgary, AB, Canada. I have never owned a car and when I had my son I bought a Masden bucket bike then a Yuba cargo bike. I transported my son to daycare and then elementary school and then picked him back up. We biked together all year and in all types of weather. I am able to afford my own home, organic food and growing a big garden. I had to make a decision when my son was born, what is most important to me? Being able to live within my means and living a simpler lifestyle. Now that my son is 16, he rides his own bike and hopefully he will be able to reason that just because he lives in the city he doesnt need a car to be successful. I think for more families to reduce their car dependency, they have be dragged into it by not being able to afford to fill up the fuel tank with higher prices and other expenses related to the cost of living.

But this man does what is right for his children. Let's just hope that New Yorkers will and dare to follow his good example. Wouldn't it be great if New York became a real cycling city like Amsterdam? Then New York actually gets its original name back: New Amsterdam.
