One of my favorite coming of age stories, aside from IT, is Summer of Night by Dan Simmons. Love that book! The Edible Woman has been on my shelf for a while now and I've never gotten around to it. Think I'll have to move it up on my list! And Atwood is such a great writer.

Boys life has been on my list for a while- sounds like I need to move it up and get started..... I think one of the best coming of age horror I've read was The Saturday Night Ghost Club by Craig Davidson. I don't think it's on many peoples radar but I loved it. Its a quick read and doesn't get bogged down by fluff but it really took me by surprised at how much I loved it. I loan it to people all the time to help get the word out

YES. Thank you. I am a huge fan of Margaret Atwood. I am from Germany, and in German book stores you will very often find her books in the "women's fiction or literary fiction" - I think these label just don't suit her. For me she belongs to science-fiction (Handmaid's Tale, Maddaddam-Trilogy, The Heart Goes Last) and - as you said it - a quiet (maybe more literary form) of horror, such as "Alias Grace". Her stories are soo clever and twisted, and really rubs it in the wound, what is wrong in our society - but in a more interesting and entertaining, and at times funny, way than most terary fiction does. I like reading literary fiction - don't get me wrong - I just think literary fiction writers often take themselves and their writing to important, and "oh so special and different" ... And because everything is "so serious", readers who read for the sake of escape, do not reach out to the literary fiction shelfs and completely miss out on such great writers as Margaret Atwood. And on the other hand, the people, who read more women's fiction (in Germany it is mostly chick-lit, or some very corny "eye-opening" novels), will probably be confused and upset, about the themes Margaret Atwood depicts in her novels. Therefore, I am sooo happy to have you mentioning her, here. I loved this twisted tale on the concept "feeling to be eating alive/ consumed by society" - so horrorfying. This book can definitely be read as a psychological thriller of going mad.

For coming of age, since I think you have already read December Boys 🤔, I would recommend Malignant Summer by Tim Meyer. It's a new release. The one that jumps first to mind about rereads would be Ender's Game. I thought it was kind of strange and just okay but I for some reason decided to reread it and now it's one of my favorite books. Another would be The Archived. Liked it better the second time around.

Boy's Life is sitting on my shelf, waiting to be read. This made me want to add it to my TBR for this month. Plus-I love Robert McCammon. I enjoyed They Thirst and The Wolf's Hour from him as well, if you are still looking at recommendations. In fact, They Thirst has the scariest vampire scene I have ever read and it is hands down my favorite vamp book. It is the best of 80s vamp horror.

heh, what a coincidence. When you said "best coming of age horror" novel, I thought, "Boy's Life" by McCammon. I don't recall anything about it as I read it long ago (probably more than once), but I remember the emotions it gave me. For some reason, I was thinking about this book earlier this summer so I downloaded it along with other McCammon books I haven't read/don't remember if I read. No idea why it came to mind (maybe you'd mentioned it in an earlier video). Now I'll have to reread it sooner than planned. And thank you for putting The Only Good Indians onto my radar. I don't think I would have read it otherwise. It was so good! I'll look for the Chainsaw one. A book I enjoyed even more the second time was Peter Straub's/Stephen King's collaborative effort, The Talisman. But that was read a long time ago so don't want to reread in case it fails when reading it as an adult.

I’m on chapter 8 on my heart is a chainsaw, so far it seems ok but I feel it will really pick up soon. The only good Indians I didn’t really like, I finished it but the big twist in the middle threw me off, it’s like I invested in these characters and then all of a sudden it was like starting a new story, maybe if I do a 2nd read of it I’ll like it better like you did cause I really liked Jones Night of the Mannequins and My heart is a chainsaw so far.Have you read any other Stephen Graham Jones? Mongrels and The last Final Girl seem interesting but I have not read them yet.

Sweetheart, Sweetheart has some good reviews, but if that kind of story isn't your thing, then it isn't your thing. Yes, I'd say The Edible woman is horror . . . quiet, literary horror. As for coming-of-age stories, I really like Something Wicked This Way Comes and Where the Red Fern Grows. Haha, I rarely re-read books because there are still so many good ones I want to read for the first time!

I would recommend "When Marnie was There" by Joan Robinson. It's about a lonely young girl with no friends who is sent to the coast to visit her aunt, and there she befriends another girl, Marnie, who is about the same age. The story becomes creepy, because Marnie is not what she seems. In the end it is very poignant and bittersweet, as life sometimes is. It was turned into a film by a famous Japanese company, Studio Ghibli. It's my favorite coming of age, because I can relate to her loneliness . I'm always looking for stories with similar characters.

Boy’s Life is good, like really good, but for me it isn’t number one on my favorite CoA stories. Number one, for me, is Ronald Kelly’s Fear. Really great story that takes you to fear county where stuff really goes down!!! I actually have a very long list for my favorite CoA, and I have a whole bookshelf dedicated to CoA. Boy’s Life is great, Don’t get me wrong, but I have a few above it when it comes to CoA. 😄

Sounds like I'm going to be reading my first Margaret Atwood, that sounds good! I thought the first half of The Only Good Indians was excellent, I thought it was going to be a 5-star for sure (gave it a 3 lol). I almost cancelled my preorder of Chainsaw but I'm going to give him another try. A Little Life may be my best Coming of Age, but its rough on the emotions.
