There are two common issues that make this exercise pretty lackluster. 1. People will typically use momentum to sway and kick their feet upward, practically nullifying any core activation. 2. Done improperly targets the hip flexors instead of the abs. It's really hard for most people to get this right. (a bonus 3rd would be people not controlling the negative) Perform it with control and proper form and they can be great. I add a pulse at the top for a bonus. Superset these with windmills and/or around-the-worlds for a way better and more complete core workout. Maybe I should start a channel. Haha

Hanging leg raises work so well. You feel a deep deep contraction and burn that alot of other exercises dont achieve. Good point on keeping the knees together too, def helps with feeling it work!
@natty1

@@aphid8494 right! I actually prefer doing them lying down, I just do the extra work by squeezing and slowly lowering my legs. I don't hang because my forearms always fatigue before my abs do. Even if they don't, they take a lot of my energy away from the core work

Gotta consciously train them to get to that level, you won’t just wake up one day being able to do them. Start by laying on your back and lifting your legs. Start with 10 reps every few hours, they don’t take much time at all. Then add a couple more in your sets every week. Then bent leg lifts. Then unbent. You’ll get there

When it comes to actual hypertrophy and progression the exercise you spend most of your time with and have the strongest mind muscle connection would be best. Though hanging leg raises show one of the highest overall emg activation when including the obliques as not many exercises can hit abs and obliques to great degree. My second fav would be long lever planks.
