Ive recently paid a deposit for a Hyundai Tuscan Elite N Line. Im about to change my mind after testing the Escape today. I might lose some refinement in the Escape but that 180kw engine is beautiful to drive and its $6K cheaper. Smooth, quiet and unlimited power when desired. My only issue was finding a suitable driver seat position with the manual seats but im sure it'll be fine. Btw Ill be getting the AWD. Great positive review. THANKS !

Hi John, I bought this when they had a @2k discount. All up $45k - Escape ST Line AWD version (Frozen White) with Power Option pack and tinted windows. (I had Ford powdercoat the callipers Red for $700).... looks very nice. The rear seat moves forward for additional space. The AWD is the way to go with all this power.

Sounds like a reasonable deal. How do you find the steering on the Escape? A few reviews have said the steering wants to get back to centre quickly. I didn't notice any obvious springy sensation on my initial test drive on a base fwd. But then i tested a phev fwd later in the day and the steering was very "dodgem car" like. Maybe its something i will get used to.

I have noticed that the steering seems to want to "right itself" on the odd occasion. I did not see this as an issue. Its probably related to the "sports" tuning on the ST line. But like any new car, they all have quirks that you become adjusted with.

Ford are doing a great job with these cars, but i think their marketing is letting them down a bit, at least here in Australia - no-one seems to know how good they are!

Like all of the German Fords (these were designed and engineered by Ford of Europe for the global market and sit on the C2 platform that underpins the current Focus) the level of engineering in these is better than some premium cars, so you’re right about it feeling way more expensive than it is 😃. We’re lucky - although called Escape, we actually are fortunate and get the European Kuga which is built to an even more premium level than the US Escape (but is priced accordingly), so feels even more above its price point. These are poorly marketed and criminally underrated in Australia.

@@4wheelsandaseat I found out on Saturday the reason Ford aren’t marketing the Escape is they can’t get enough stock at the moment. I had two dealers in Sydney tell me they would have sold 10:1 Escapes if they could, no thanks to the limited production. They don’t even have enough cars to test drive either - all FWD base models mainly or the odd Vignale that I drove to make my decision on an ST-Line AWD. The only way to buy an Escape at the moment is to put an order in like I did last Saturday. As I said in my earlier comment, there’s a 6 month wait, with a chance this could extend. Latest I read though was the semi-conductor issue was improving for Ford in October so it should be a bit better this month. Not sure though whether the Valencia plant is similarly affected. It’s a great car though that deserves a bigger following. I’m am in the process of doing my bit! More should take the plunge.

Hi Alex, Great review. I was looking to buy a new car for my wife and the Escape was not on my radar! I did look at many reviews/research of the Escape before I purchased. Like you mentioned, I was looking for an SUV that had more grunt but at an economical price (very little out there in this bracket). I purchased the Escape ST Line AWD version with Option pack and tinted windows ( Frozen white). The European styling and loads of features is great value for money. The Escape is not well promoted and therefore going to loose lots of potential sales against the traditional RAV4 and CX5. I will be jealous that my wife will be driving a better car than I now have. Just for your understanding, I had the same criteria when I bought my 2015 Jeep Cherokee (not the Grand Cherokee). I wanted grunt in a small SUV... again the Cherokee was not on my radar. The Cherokee has been a great car. Cheers.

Hi John. It's such a great car isn't it? Ford should really be marketing it a bit harder. You might have to borrow it from your wife occasionally! I haven't driven the current Cheokee yet, but I'll try and get my hands on one for a review. Thanks for watching!

@@trojanhman8136 Hi Trojan, My wife drives this car 80% of the time. I have had no issues to date. My wife keeps telling me how much she loves it. The car drives very well and like I mentioned, it has plenty of power and the right amount of "glitz". very very quite in the cabin , nice exhaust tone.... no rattles or loose items... all seems solid. My criteria for the purchase was "power/torque" in a midsize SUV that had some creature comforts at a very reasonable price. I only stumbled across the Escape by chance at the 11th hour when strolling thru the Ford car yard. At first I was a bit unsure of its looks, but it soon became clear that this was the future trend. I also had the dealer provide the calipers powder coated Red.. to match the logo, trim and its sporty looks.

Hi Alex. The genuine positivity of your review was inspiring. I test drove a FWD Vignale on Saturday as there are no AWD Escapes to test in NSW! Only a couple of AWD demonstrators on offer at the moment on Carsales in Melbourne a year old for almost a new car price with 12K on the odometer. It drove beautifully - great fun, handled like a car in cityscape but really opened up on the Cahill expressway. So much room for the kids too. Loved the heads up display and the punch in sport mode was thrilling! I loved the drive so much I put a deposit down for an AWD ST-Line with the option pack in metallic blue. Had to have the heads up display and boot opener 😁. Like for nearly all car makers with the semi-conductor shortage and now a magnesium supply crimp there is a wait on Escapes up till end of May unfortunately. But with RAV4 delays of 10-12 months encounting, if they get the car to me by then or earlier (touch wood) it will still be a bonus in this market. Price locked in too to de-risk any likely hike. I will just have to be patient!

I have the previous generation Escape ST-Line AWD which is the ZG, the the ZG MY18.75 have 19x8 black alloys with 235/45/19 tyres all round, the AWD version is the Haldex 4 (or Borg Warner 10 since Borg Warner now own HALDEX) with is an on-demand active torque split however in some circumstances can send torque to rear wheels first if in "sports" mode which is basically the only mode the driver has to choose from as putting the transmission into drive is just normal mode, you can use the paddle shifters in "D" mode if you want to gear down however the transmission will upshift again to a higher gear depending on road speed, you can defeat this by going into "S" and then use the paddle shifters to manually keep the transmission in the gear ratio you want which is great at highway speeds as 6th gear is all you need due to having a wide torque curve , only need to upshift if going up steep hills for extended periods if speed is limited to 80km/h. It's near the same engine to the ZG version, the main difference is engine tune, the ZG outputs are 183kW at 6,000rpm and 345Nm from 2,000 to 4,500rpm however since the emission spec is EURO 6 if you use 98 RON fuel power is up rated to 198kW in sports mode, Ford AU did not tell owners this however its been confirmed by Ford North America / Europe that is the case since the engines all come from the Spain facility for international and North American markets, that said the ZH version is actually EURO 5 spec and they have a PPF (petrol particulate filter) and don't have the 98 RON engine tune. Steering and ride balance is great for both versions hat said I would prefer 17x7.5 alloys over the 19x8 purely for fuel economy reasons also riding on 45 series profile tyres in Sydney at 36psi all round is not a nice feeling, at highway speeds the balance is near perfect and the steering is super direct which I actually like the only thing lacking is feel but that is how all EPAS are from Ford. SYNC3 works great however I use Android Auto for the most part which allows natural voice for sms replies and also making calls, a lot better then SYNC3 which is great for navigation and DAB/FM/AM functions, also the ZG version has SONY audio setup (even though the actual head unit is Panasonic). In terms of space the ZG is slightly smaller however for my needs its fine and seat comfort is good even over long distances, never feel tired after doing long 6 hour trips. The negatives? fuel economy, I tend to drive always in "S" mode, again the 19x8 alloys don't help either and normally kerb weight with me and my cargo is around 1,880kg driving in Sydney start stop traffic the current average is 10.3L per 100km (verified via fuel pump logging) which is Trip 1 which I have not reset since I purchased brand new, on trip 2 I reset it every fuel tank refill and at present after doing close to 450km highway and about 150km metro on a full 60L the average is 8.5L, the other major negative is metro ride balance, this can be explained due to the slightly stiffer lower suspension & 19x8 alloys with 45series profile tyres, its at best lumpy but on highways its very good so it's a compromise. Overall its been a great vehicle over the last 3 and 1/5 years and will hold onto it for another 3 years. Thanks for reading.

I'm actually wondering if the difference in indicator stalks might be down to the cars being made in different factories. The one I reviewed was made in Spain, but I believe Ford also make them in Thailand. @@4wheelsandaseat Ford changed the configeration in early 2021 (cost saving excercise). I believe that the left hand stalk vehicles lost the paddles shifters in the process as i could not see them in your review but the car featured did have the Manual gearbox selector. As far as i am aware all australian market cars are made in Spain as we get the USA model with the more powerful engine.

@@4wheelsandaseat I don’t think they are produced in Thailand at all, but in any case no, all of ours are sourced from the European factory in Spain. The realm for the blinkers is simple; Ford Aus de-specced the car for MY21 to improve profit, removing the heated steering wheel from the Vignale and ST-Line pack. The heated steering wheel forces the use of European (left) side indicators as the heating element is configured only for left hand drive models.

This is Euro Ford so it is 95RON only, the indicator is on the wrong side and it runs euro spec brakes, you know brakes like cardboard, so expect new rotors and pads at around 35,000kms at a high cost. The power and torque are epic as are the driving dynamics, however, I prioritise low running costs and buying products from manufacturers who don't have a reputation for burning customers. Would I buy one... tempted, but no.
