So it's a prism+filter. That's quite interesting. I've been using prism glasses for years, for reading, gaming, etc., without any filters. It really helps a lot with eye strain. But it has a drawback: you need to sit close to your monitors. If you lean back for more than a meter, they distort the view and become useless.

Hi Doc! Can you make a video about thin vs thick lenses? I’m nearsighted & my prescription is on the stronger side. I don’t care about my glasses being thick and sticking out of the frame. However, I don’t like how my head/eyes look(s) significantly smaller behind my glasses. I wanted to know if that was just a downside of my strong prescription, or if paying for thinner lenses would solve this problem.
@mvallejo1111
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Malika! I'm Mark! I do not work with Dr. Allen or his practice but am a practicing Optician for 25 years now. If your prescription is of the higher variety you should definitely purchase thinner lenses. Anything in the -1.00 to -3.00 range Polycarbonate is sufficient (it's not my favorite due to clarity issues but it's thinner and lighter) If you can spare the extra $$ I would opt for Hi Index 1.67 lenses. They are very thin and light weight. Not as impact resistant but still safe for drilling through the lenses if you like rimless glasses. On high minus lenses the image on the backside of the lens may seem skewed or smaller. This is normal but can be reduced the following ways. Make sure the frame is a good fit. By "good fit" I mean make sure your eyes are in the geometric center of the lens. People often times purchase frames that are too big for them and this creates that image you don't like seeing, also making the lens edge thicker. The 2nd thing is purchasing the right lens material for your Rx. Listen to your optician! Most times they're not on commission and are sales driven. They're there to work with the Dr to help you see better and feel better about wearing your glasses. I hope this helps.

I have an odd question, but a fairly applicable one :) You have a great mix of skills here, your professional skills and knowledge, but also a clear knowledge of filming, production quality, lighting, and you play videogames. Do you have recommendations, glasses wise or gear wise, for folks who record and stream with facecam and/or face reading detection for avitar rigs? I mainly ask becuase some of the lighting set ups for this sort of thing can turn a pair of glasses into a little disco-ball of glare. And also because streamers usually broadcast for quite a long time while dealing with the screen's blue light and the bright light of their set up.

I used to have them. Remember found the magnification annoying. Your really need to consciously "super relax" your eyes, which just gave me more headache. It's also annoying that you can't just look outside a window or anywhere, without having to take them off. So note taking is a nono. Therefore I bought some regular blue-light glasses, without magnification. But, I am now considering buying these again. For coding, and also for reduced stress during night, before I go to bed. When your eyes are shutting down, it's best to have some magnification, because otherwise the tension in your eyes could keep you awake longer. 👍🏻

I found your video because I have the Razer Gunnar FPS Glasses and started wondering if they actually work, do they block blue light? I am not convinced. So I started searching for someone that has tested them and stumbled on your video, figured I would mention my testing. 1) the color wheel test: I did not see nearly any difference in changes to blues, they do add a warmer tint as you mentioned, but the blues stay the same, maybe a touch darker blue, but certainly is not filtering it on this test. Fail. 2) the blue & black square/circle test: the blue square remained 100% the same and did not change at all. Fail. 3) the reflection test: I tested in two ways, first was looking in the mirror with my phone in front of me and in the mirror I see the reflection color between blue and purple, not the best result. Secondly I put the glasses over the palm of my hand and positioned the glasses facing the PC monitor and looked at the reflection which was almost entirely blue, great results. I'd say this test Pass. 4) flashing black to blue boxes: with the glasses on the blue box was 100% clear. Fail. I reached out to Gunnar and to Razer requesting the report from their spectral analysis they must have completed in order to validate the filtering of the blue & UV lights. Gunnar stated the data is publicly accessible on gunnar.com/pages/technology - - however, that page has zero lab results or test data outside of a bunch of marketing jargon. Razer did not have further information or assistance to offer, other than contact Gunnar. A manager at Gunnar is reaching out to their lab test team to request this report. It will be interesting to see a 3rd party perform the spectral analysis to compare what Gunnar puts out, because in all of my tests, the conclusion was very evident - these glasses are not blocking blue light, maybe a tiny bit in the 5% range, but to claim 65% is something I would bet against.

hii Dr. Eye,, what's the differences between gaming glasses vs computer glasses ? i am in germany, any idea where can i get one of such gaming glasses without tint ? thx andrew

Computer glasses have the power specifically set for the computer screen distance. Where gaming glasses typically are not set for the computer distance but only have a slight +0.25 plus magnification. If looking for gaming glasses that are clear. Perhaps talking to your local optician about getting weak plus powered lenses, or getting them set for your normal screen gaming distance.

u said the computer glass has +0.2plug magnification (i am not sure is the whole glasses or just center of the glasses. i do know u said in other video that computer glass have the convergent effect, because the screen is wide and flat, and it is straining that the side of the eyes have to control the muscle to focus on the screen at the both outer sides of the monitor screen. however as for gaming glasses, i suppose they don't have this convergent.. am i right ? apart from this convergent effect on the glasses, there actually no different between a computer glass and gaming glass, am i right ? pls correct me if i got some point wrong. thank you. appreciate your respond, Doc. andrew

Doctor Eye Health hi there I make sure to give my eyes a break from looking at a computer screen or my phone screen or a tv screen but there are times that I feel like no matter what I use that I feel like I have to bend forward to check what I typed or what others have tyed if it's small print

Thanks for this review, it was extremely helpful. I’ve been on the fence for quite a while. I do have a somewhat related question: I have noticed that i have more difficulty focusing on rapidly moving objects now that I’m in my mid 30s, and I had PRK around 26 - is there any possibility than PRK surgery could cause this or is it more likely a symptom of eye fatigue? I spend 8-12 hours a day in front of a screen a majority of days.

Unfortunately no. I think it is a combo of the surgery and aging.

Doctor Eye Health Thx for letting me know. I mainly play fortnite, but I do like playing in the dark, but since that causes my eyes to hurt a little I have to play with my lights on, do u think that theses glasses will allow me to play in the dark without my eyes hurting?

Also about five Yeats ago U asked the optician if he could do computer use glasses for me but he done reading glasses for me instead even though I explained to him my monitor was 3 foot away from me. So the glasses weren't of any use to me. I would love a good gaming glasses with blue light blocking on them though.

Great video Dr. Allen. I have been trying to find a perfect pair of glasses that I can read in (at a laptop distance ) and also enjoy a larger display at 8ft or so. I'm always prescribed a distance Rx (-3.50 /-3.75) with slight Cyl (-.25 and -.75) but I find that this combination causes me not be super comfortable b/c of a defocusing that happens when my eyes become at rest and are not hyper focusing. This has been frustrating for the last couple of pairs I have had made. You point out prism values and possible offsetting of the point of center focus on the lenses in the video and I am now wondering if that is exactly what I need to try. The myopia/astig combination always causes my eyes to "reshift" and refocus while also experiencing a feeling of slight pressure on my right (weaker eye) - and I somehow can never get used to this - it is always a conscious effort and really gets in the way especially when reading. If you or anyone has any experience with something like I describe, please let me know or point me to a resource or 2 :) Thanks!

@@DoctorEyeHealth I don’t think so. - I have never heard of that from them - but I will bring it up when I see the doctor actually this upcoming week. What I have done is taken notes on my observations and experience with the last three pairs (that have sph /cyl) vs. the glasses I had done last without any cyl. Things like “focus at rest”, uncomfortable “image shift and realignment I feel my eyes have to do with the newer pairs whenever I place them on properly and pressure/ sight burning sensation on my right (weaker) eye. I actually find having the glasses 5-6mm further out makes perspective more natural but clarity or Rx strength is sacrificed a bit compared to having the lenses right up next to my eyes... if it was one pair I would call it a fluke or lemon but 3 pairs? I can only say that the compensation I need (or am prescribed) is not resulting in comfortable or optimum results even over time.

Hey Doctor Eye Health :) I am wearing prescription glasses +1.75 - +2 with astigmatism and was wandering if buying Gaming or Computer glasses for my everyday only pair of glasses that I wear all the time(Gunnar have prescription options). I was wondering that as I am a software developer but also have very active life and spend as many as possible time outdoors. So is it bad wearing blue light/gaming/computer glasses all day long and using them on the beach, mountains and anything without leaving them during the day? Your answer would be really helpful so I can make my decision for my new every day glasses!!

I suggest that if your eyes hurt at all, that you first visit with a local eye care professional about getting a computer glasses prescription for gaming and evaluate for other causes of pain, such as dry eyes.

There are few good brands which are safe for regular daily wear...but most cosmetic lenses on the market...like halloween lenses or theatrical lenses are made of older medical plastic from the 1960s and pose a health risk. For those types of lenses I dont wear them more than 4 hours.
