EVHs 'Eruption' never looses it's impact to me from the first time that I ever heard it as a teenager in my bedroom armed with only a crappy acoustic guitar in my hands, listening intently, mesmerized, the tone unbelievable, the construction was impeccable, and the energy was infectious. I knew on that fateful day, in that ecstatic moment,as the last vibrations of Eddies whammy bar was fading into the distance out through my bedroom window, that I'd have to take up the fucking drums!!! :-)).

UFO/Michael Schenker's Live Version's are much much much better than the original, This Version was excellent, but was from 1973 studio Vinyl and the live versions evolved so much more over the years becoming a 12 to 13 minute master piece's, Schenker just kept getting better and better. Just glad that someone included the Maestro into the mix. Rock Bottom is part of hard rock history.

There are no bests but this is a great compilation. Loved seeing Sweet Child O'Mine on here. My daughter (who never got into rock), one day was riding with me. And was talking while the song played on the radio. During Slash's solo she lost her train of thought and was listening to the solo. Then, when it was over, kinda of looked at dad like "Omg!"... Good list, TCJ - you can tell so much about the list-maker's musical point of view with these things, and mine is similar. Opening up with Nuno got my attention - when I first heard "Mama, Don't Wanna go to School Today" back whenever, you could tell that there was now a post-VH caliber of player, in a generational sense. Then Zak's perfect soaring mix of thematic Gilmore-esque long notes, picked pentatonics, raunchy blues licks, and the ascending chromatic figure at the end - it's just always been a favorite of mine. His timing always feels so perfect - juxtaposed with his persona of raw, scary viking bearded guy and self-proclaimed adopted child of riff godfather Leslie West. Bark at the Moon - what a metal song-writing performance by Jake E. Lee. I learned that song from Japanese tab when I was in Japan around 1988, and always felt like there were little "riffs-within-riffs" in a lot of the guitar parts. Also, classic metal pedal point in the riff, but (in my mind, at least) it never sounds dated. Maybe it's the timing of the chords (that alternate with the pedal point metal chug parts). For me, that song is timeless. Yngwie had to be in there, too, and of course you end with "Eruption." The list practically makes itself. Regardless of people's individual impressions, the talent in the excerpted leads = almost incomprehensible when listened to in concentrated form like this. Jesus.

Just one another list that reflects a personal taste...if you do not mention your criteria, it's just 'the ones I like the most'.Some solos I really love (more than 10): Black Dog (Page); Burn (Blackmore); Beat it (EVH); Mr Crowley (Randy); Ice Cream Man (EVH); We will rock you (Brian); Fire (Edu Ardanuy); Mary Had a little Lamb (SRV); I'll see the light tonight (Yngwie); Red House (Jimi); Altitudes (Becker); For the love of God (S. Vai); Cliffs of dover (E. Johnson); Surfing with the alien (Satch); Heartbreaker (Page); Far Beyond the Sun (Yngwie). I could mention many solos from other guys like many great ones by Jeff Beck (Blue Wind, cause we've ended as lovers)...this is just a simple list. Why 10? Is that an old pythagorean number? PS - Randy did really great solos like Crazy Train, Diary of a madman, revelation (mother earth) and Paranoid (live tribute).About Slash: YOU MUST BE KIDDING! Say you like it, not it's one of the best! Anyway, he had some nice solos. But not to be in my list.

just for discussion, then, I prefer my music to be melodical first -- that is technical mastery for its own sake maketh not great music imho. That said, you'd have to consider Hotel California, Stairway to Heaven, Sultans of Swing, something from Gilmour, Free Bird, something from Blackmore, Clapton, cliche' as it may be, maybe even one of Angus Young's solos or Tony Iommi's, but I do think including Michael Schencker, Gary Moore, and the one from Bark at the Moon (sorry! lol) are solid choices too. Notable absences (but not who I'd necessarily pick): Hendrix, Santana, Nugent, Jeff Beck. Notable Inclusions whom I'd rank perhaps a little lower (by above mentioned ranking scale) are Rhoads, Yngwe, Van Halen.

Agreed. The current list seems stuck in a late 70's to early 90's time warp and thereby ignored the contributions of highly skilled guitar pioneers. The Speed King himself Ritchie Blackmore - the Godfather of Neo-Classical shred, could have easily been included on this list.

I too am happy to see Gary Moore...so underrated, but an awesome player. Rest in Peace Gary. Also the absolute BEST solo ever ever ever is Gilmour's Comfortably Numb...hands down...One more I think should be added as well, Dave Meniketti from Y&T...Just listen to his solo in I Believe in You...awesome stuff...

Great list! Two of my all-time favorites are Vivian Campbell's solo in Holy Diver and Gary Richrath's solo in Golden Country off the "Live: You Get What You Play For" album. Gary Richrath was one of my favorite guitarists ever, and he's probably at the top of my all-time underrated guitarists.

Clayton Schorege Who has come out after SRV that's better? Jason Becker should have been the 90's Malmsteen but he became very ill. Dime Bag Darrel was great but never really got to his full potential as a guitar god because of all the bullshit egos in Pantera. Kurt Cobain was never a good guitarist but a really good song writer. Kenny Wayne Sheperd was good but no where near as great as SRV. Slash was great but still nowhere as talented as SRV. John Mayer is very good but doesn't have the magic touch SRV had. Gary Clark Jr. is very talented but hasn't done anything to even come close to SRV. Shawn Lane and Petrucci are virtuoso geniuses but even they didn't change the world of music at the level like SRV did. There were better guitarist than SRV in the past sure, but in the blues category SRV was unrivaled and all the other great legends (including Hendrix) all followed the blues as their foundation, and blues was where SRV was a god, even Clapton, BB King, Muddy Waters, Albert King saw SRV as something very rare and special in blues. There hasn't been a guitarist to bring back guitars the way they use to be back in the old days. All we have as guitar masters now days are the old relics like Gilbert, Vai, Satriani, Petrucci, Malmsteen, Batio, Halen, Slash, Clapton, Young etc... It seems like the further we go into the future the less likely we have have of seeing another ground breaking phenomenon guitarist, and instead more low tuned D dropped power chord hungry octaves slinging screaming grunting no talent bad haircut Metallica wannabe tattooed emo non shredders.

This is just like the never ending cell phone battle... "iPhone is best"... "No, Android is better"... "No, because iPhone can do this"... "Well, Android can do that and that's worth more"... "No, it's better to be able to do this"... "No, this is the best solo"... "He's much better because he plays like this"... "No, he is much better because he doesn't play like that"... "He shouldn't be on the list"... "That list is wrong"... "My list is right" 'Personal preference'... two simple words but as soon as they're put together noone know what it means.

Like every top ten out there... this selection it´s a simple matter of taste, as all these solos are great. Some people like this, some like another... etc. BUT this time, for those who didn´t had the chance to listen... I would recommend Buckethead´s solo on Nottinghan Lace, which could be fairly included in this list.
@218IKE

Gabriel Nardin Music If you asked 1,000 people to list their top 10 guitar solos you would have 1,000 different lists. As you say, it's a matter of taste and everybody thinks they have excellent taste. Personally I can't see how John Petrucci was not included but equally a dozen other people will suggest their own particular favourite. It's a discussion that could run forever.
