You know, this was one of the first Gundam shows to be localised in the west (0080: War in the Pocket and Wing coming alongside it), and... It totally deserved that honour. Not just because Shoji Kawamori did the designs for Units 1 and 2 (since Macross Plus was popular at the time), but because... Look at it. It's so intense and badass people had to see it.

@@stormmeansnowork Even in modern, heavily digital offerings, we still rarely see something like those Verniers given such attention. Freedom/Strike Freedom had a few "flaps" of the wings every now and then. 00 moved the engines around throughout its first sortie, but that's all I can really think of. Again, I recognize that details take time and time takes money. Both then and now. So the fact that the put the attention to detail in back in the day just makes it even more special.
@stormmeansnowork

@@grimlock1471 Yes indeed. While I am not saying that producers nowadays have less passion about Gundam, it is hard to look away from the fact that the success in Wing and SEED (and the latter in particular) shifted a lot of weighting to selling plastic models with minimal production cost (i.e. cheaply reusable animations). 0083 was just a 13 episodes OVA with so much details and yet, all we got in those days were just some low quality 1/144 gundams (it wasn't until the late 90s that the series received MG and subsequently HGUC treatment), but SEED Destiny simply threw away SEED's story foundation with a crap ending that could have been delivered in perhaps 35 episodes and still had a strong model market. When this happens, it is inevitable that some level of production quality was sacrificed. In fact the same happened to Unicorn, if you may not remember. During its pre-production stage, the writers started out asking for 8 episodes of 50-60 mins each, but was given just 6. However Sunrise realized after that rushed pace of episode 4 that 6 episodes clearly doesn't work, they gave the team a 7th episode of 90 mins. That's why episodes 5 to 7 took much longer to air than 1 to 4, due to the change of production direction. Frankly, a lot of story details of Unicorn was removed because of this decision but at least they learned that lesson from Destiny and invested more money in order to sell models. The sad thing with this kind of mindset, is that with such a successful model sales, Sentinel and Crossbone are not getting animated in the next decade

This was from the 90's when animation really went from cartoon to cinema, with some of the most iconic animated films coming out in that decade. This and 08MS Team really has that gravity that cinema should have, and it makes sense, since they were inspired by the 80's Nam/post-Nam movies had. 08MS team is literally Nam with mechs and Stardust Memory is Top Gun with mechs. Every Gundam that came after this hasn't been pure kino, and all of them has aspects of it aimed at selling to kids no matter how violent the action got, but recently Origin brought back that adults exclusive feel writing for Gundam and the new Hathaway film really was the return of cinema to Gundam franchise after years of shonen level writing. On top of that, the mech designs are done by Kawamori Shoji(the man who designed for Patlabor, Eureka7, Macross, and Armored Core among other things) and Katoki Hajime(who you will know very well if you're into Gunpla Building, with his own dedicated MG line-up by Bandai).

I disagree on the portion about "Every Gundam after this", as Turn-A's entire purpose was to be a "Fuck Victory Gundam" kinda thing, where they go out of their way to use Old Units, and fights only happen every few episodes. Its a very slow paced show, but its one of the best because of it.
@Noobnormality
Жыл бұрын
While i do agree with your points, i want to point out that the "aspects of it aimed at selling to kids no matter how dark the action got" only really apply to AU shows. Gundam is still that hard-blooded adult sci-fi anime you know, at least on the UC side. But i mean the marketing stuff you're pointing out kinda is the point since the beginning? What I love about Gundam is how it crosses the line between adult fiction and "toy" marketing, and you can especially see that with the MSV line, with how much detail the graphic novels have despite it marketing model kits to collectors. It really gives you a nice peak on how actual technological data works in real life.

The Zephyranthes is in my top 3 main character starter Gundams of all time, the other two being the RX-178 Gundam Mark II and GAT-X105 Strike. Expanding it to top 5, the Victory One and GX-9900. Exia and Wing get honorable mentions but the reality is that they're way too overpowered. I like them more for aesthetic. My only issue with Impulse is that it's really derivative of Strike.
This scene after Kou makes peace with Kelly and reaffirms his place as the unit 1 pilot always stuck in my mind. It's such a great scene-- pity how some aspects of the ova turned out, like the whole romance crap, but it's still beautifully animated. and hey, there's always the gundam 0083 rebellion manga that fixes a lot of issues I had with the ova and also fleshes out characters nobody really thought too much about. the manga still has its issues and fan servicey nature, but it's overall great and pairs up nicely with the ova as a sort of alternate timeline. Great upload.
