The “general rule” is to use anti-seize” when joining 2 or more assemblies that are static; I.e. they don’t move relative to each other like a nut and bolt. . Grease is used when joining assemblies that are dynamic; i.e they move relative to each other like ball bearings mounted in a race. So, use grease on the caliper pins AND use grease on the “ears” & back of the brake pads & the guides. Anti seize “could” be used on the bolts that secure the caliper to the pins since those 2 assemblies are “static” relative to each other. Something I recall from many years ago from a Mechanical Engineering course.

You should definitely NOT be using anti seize on bolts that secure the caliper. They often come with thread locker from the factory, so if anything put a bit of the blue one so they don't come loose from vibration.

In any area prone to snow, ice road salt and brine, use anti seize on every nut and bolt, even lug nut s. Vibration loosening is a myth.
@paulg3316

@@mattp4079 That’s been my experience also - I’ve seen grease or anti seize used with little or no loosening of fasteners. However if anti seize or “regular” grease is applied to wheel lug studs it reduces the friction when the lug nuts are installed & it changes the recommended torque. It’s possible to “over stress” the fastener where it may affect its yield strength - but again, I’ve never seen this occur.

Young man, you explained very well how to use those two products. I bought 4 types of product two of these 3M and two lubricant in small tubes, but I don't know what is what to use on. I'm not a mechanic and try to replace the break pads for the first time. I watched several video and one guy use silicone on every thing, so I don't trust him and the other guy is new like me and he tried to explain in the video, but he is not sure himself too. So, again don't trust this guy. I found your video and now I know what I'm doing. Thank you, mate.

I don't usually respond to KZitem videos but I'll just put in my two cents well he did do a very good job at explaining things the one thing he did do wrong however was installed the outer pad wrong those two metal tabs that you see on the actual back of the brake pad are meant to actually go in the caliper side to meet the two pins on the inside of the piston he also didn't use any brake clean on the actual brake rotors nor did he clean the back of the actual piston other than that a very well made video

Lubrication is a good practice, but there were a few things ignored here: wash the rotor with brake cleaner (might be also 3M) - it is covered in anti-corrosive oil. Inner break pad was not worn, neither was the rotor - there is a problem with breaking forces distribution. It breakes with 1/4 surface/force. Without fixing this problem, you will very likely destroy the new set of break disks and pads as well. You could have cleaned and lubricated the wheel hub (instead of inner rotor). It is important to be clean and flat.

Anti seize is widely used on brakes, HOWEVER it is NOT grease! Grease is what the engineers of most cars recommend. If you don’t believe me look at your repair manual. BMW recommends very little in the way of any grease if I recall. So they vary, but most say to utilize grease and if you understand lubrication, there is a distinct and measurable difference between a grease and anti seize.

See a lot of KZitem mechanics here. Having worked at a dealership, been working on cars at home for years and done a lot of brakeservices, I can say he did everything very well! Would also recommend cleaning off the hub and applying new antisieze, cleaning off the piston as well as possible and using brake clean on the rotors. For those of you saying he should not use grease/anti-sieze on the inside of the rotor, you must be thinking of brake drums. In this video, there is no brake drum, and if you don't know the difference, and don't know what the friction surfaces are, you should NOT be performing work on the brakes of your car.

First he didn't do a good job cleaning calipers etc. Second he didn't apply anti seize behind the pads so they don't stick to the pistons. Third he didn't spray brake cleaner on the new rotors to remove protective layer of oil. All in all bad video.
@JessM1

not to mention he put anti seize on a coated rotor, thats why its painted black.
@SchweinungHD

Using brake clean is recommended, but not necessary. The oil will be removed by itself pretty quickly, and is not enough to effect braking much. If you have worked with brakes, you know that even painted/coated rotors should be applied with antisieze, as the coating really doesn't do that much. It helps, but it's usually a very thin, weak layer of coating. Never have I experienced that the pads stick to the rotors, but I do apply antisieze to the backside myself. All in all, not a bad video.

It’s not as bad rotor, it’s poor contact from the pads due to caliper biasing issues. Discs edges will only corrode and the friction surface will be lipped if the pads were seated correctly and able to move within the caliper for even coverage across the surface. Secondly, should’ve cleaned the hub with wire wheel/brush to remove existing corrosion/rust. Same as the caliper bracket and actual caliper piston/pot, generally on any contact area of pads or shims.

I do not trust that the lube, so close to the pads, will not bleed onto the rotor or contaminate the braking surface. When I saw the glob go on the pad hadware, I cringed. It's just to close to the rotor for my comfort, and I can imagine it getting onto the rotor. Not a criticism; if the results are good: great! I also wonder if Sil-Glyde would be enough to lube everything: slide pins, retainer screw and hub to prevent seizing. I'm sure the copper anti-seize is great but just wondering if Sil -Gyde would be sufficient. I'm either too cheap to buy 2 products or I'm just more efficient and/or economy thinking. Lol

Chris O - Anti seize, aluminum, copper, or nickel works great metal to metal. If washout is not a concern, then lithium or calcium base grease will work on metal to metal. Silicone (with or without PTFE) is ideal where rubber seals and boots are concerned. Silicone grease will work on metal to metal, but it just isn’t quite as washout out resistant. So yes, you could easily get away with just silicone and probably be fine. Geeky guys just like to use the best possible option for any particular circumstance. 😊

Rotor is coated with Copper Antiseize? It might be causing more problems when the copper runs all over the rotors and brakes. How did the rotors get so pitted? Salt baths? Washing off the salt might help. Looks like the brakes sat for long periods with salt to get that pitted? The rotors should have a smooth shiny surface if working properly.

those screws only index the part, the clamping force comes from the lug bolts. Also youll want to eat a bullet if you put loctite on that screw

Ha ha vordevan I second that. You even can leave the screws out, you don't really need them.

good day milanmastracci. I have a question. i'm not sure though if this has something to do with lubricants. I hear knocking sound from my rear right wheel every time I hit the break. some says something's wrong with my sliding pin/sliding pin bushing, etc. any idea sir? thank you.

Guess that's why O2 sensors come with copper antiseiz.

Can I use aluminum anti seize since it’s cheaper than copper?
