Im a practitioner of Goju Ryu karate, and i really do agree with you. However i think in karate we really need to start doing more practical training, a long with traditional training (kata, bunkai etc), heavy bags and sparring for a good hour isn't being practice in enough dojos and i think we should make it a necessity to make those essential in the dojo. I honestly believe any Kungfu or Karate styles are great for self defense except for the ones that train for specifically sporting. I practice Wing Chun and Xingyi and when I felt that Xingyi was more difficult to apply, I found it slipping into my Wing Chun without realizing it. So it all boils down to understanding, and the deeper the understanding you get, the better the art becomes.

I agree Jesse. I think Karate is one of the best martial arts for self defense if it's practiced for self defense. Self defense is different than what we see in the UFC. The ground is not the place you want to be when you're fighting outside of a ring or octagon. But a lot of people don't know there is ground fighting in Karate too. It has it all.
@Supermomo2007

ground fighting in karate?? where?? in which forms??? which karate style?
@nw4357
6 жыл бұрын
It isn't found in your average dojo but it does exist in the schools that look at Karate as a whole art. Okinawan forms of Karate. Or karate jutsu not karate do. Karate wasn't a sport to the ancient Okinawans, it was life or death. It would be be silly to think that fights never went to the ground back then. Now the type of ground fighting I'm talking about is against an untrained thug attacking you. It's not as complete as Ju Jutsu but it is there. Karate has joint locks, neck twists, eye gouging, and dirty fighting. Because it's meant to keep you alive not win a match. It's hard to find authentic schools of Karate as it was meant to be because it's painful at times and that doesn't make money.
@Supermomo2007

ah ok. iam in a authentic hung gar kung fu school and we learn to survive in a life and death situation, especially with full contact sparring. i will start soon shuai jiao (kung fu wrestling) and plan to visit fukien in china to learn dishuquan. ju jutsu has his complete groundwork from this kung fu style.

Unfortunately most ppl forget about the real combat moves of Karate and Taekwondo, it's not as bad as with Tai Chi. But still, most ppl think when you learn Karate and Twd you are taught to fight on the street exactly like in sparring in these martial arts, which is not that effective, as there are many rules in competitions. Most Ppl teach Karate and Twd as sports. Also most ppl seem tk have forgotten the practical appliation of the forms, as well. They all think, it's some kind of traditional dance with no actual use on the street

1to cooperate martial moves with natural responses, the simple the better. It is faster. Same as Kung fu. Kata or form are important, but they’re concepts. Still need to be simplified and tailored to your own body. 2. For the flinch response, you can use leaning to kick.that saves more time. Awesome video btw.

Love the vids. Why, when I watch full contact karate/ non-mma, I never see a karate technique last more than the 1st or 2nd hit. The defender is rarely in the correct position after the initial contact that allows for the kata or techniques to continue as planned. The full contact sparring I see always looks like it descends into some hybrid MMA/boxing fight, then technical 1,2,3 moves being executed. I dont meant to disparage karate, but martial arts techniques just don't seem to work against moving targets. Can somone please answer this honestly?
@Fureviusx1x
6 жыл бұрын
bob bobbinson Not sure if I can be of any help. But here's how I see it. Prepare yourself for a long ass explanation. People often look at kata and take the forms very literally for what they seem to be. In a real life self defense situation you're not going to be able to execute a kata move by move. But that's the entire point. They're not designed to do that. A lot of people don't know this and think kata are for self defense. They're not. Kata are simply handy tools and ways to methodically remember movements, basic techniques and fundamentals of the human body. If you're going to literally perform a kata when somebody attacks you on the street you can be assured you'll be knocked out. The old Okinawan masters weren't magical all knowing geniuses who thought when you do a certain technique the attacker will automatically without a doubt assault you as a reaction from that side or from that angle. You can't predict human behavior like that. The Okinawan masters never meant to do that with kata. They created kata for a whole different purpose. Namely to record the vast knowledge of Karate. Kata hold the knowledge and essence of what we need to know in order to defend ourselves. By recording it in fixed patterns it's much easier to remember all there is to know and to refresh it whenever necessary. Kata as a discipline itself has nothing to do with self defense. The practical application (Bunkai) of individual kata movements on the other hand is a complete different story. In short. Kata and self defense are two different Karate disciplines. But they're connected through practical application. You perform a kata not to learn how to defend yourself. You can't defend yourself by moving in fixed directions and positions. As I said, you can't predict your opponent's behavior like that. It's impossible. You perform them in order to learn the very basic fundamentals and techniques which are essential for every Karate practitioner. See katas as shadowboxing. Only difference is, shadowboxing is more open whereas kata are fixed. But the very essence is pretty much the same thing.
@blockmasterscott
6 жыл бұрын
bob bobbinson katas are a template or a foundation to start your free fighting from. For example, boxers shadow box and work on speed bags all the time bit you don’t see them fight like that in the ring. Or an NFL team will practice half back toss left all week even though they know the play will turn to shit during Sunday’s game. But practicing half back toss left gives the team s foundation to work from. Katas are the same thing.

Funny thing, but pretty sure IKMF (Krav Maga) is the best for self defense due to its very realistic training for the things that will probably happen to you in a fight. (Like, in your first year you will learn how to defend yourself against knifes, kicks, chocks, etc. And in your second year, you'll learn how to defend against a gun at point blank range) Krav Maga was developed for the IDF and in my opinion, the best for self defense

Hi Jesse, great video as always. You make a lot of good points but when it comes to the order of moves in Kata where would you draw the line between the order of moves being important, and it being necessary to take those moves out of order to fit the situation. I really like Iain Abernethy's analogy - Kata are like alphabets, they don't alway make sense when you do them in order but you take the necessary sections and put them into the order that is appropriate at the time to get a meaningful result. Now if course I am not saying that the order is not at all important, the Kata are of course full of cominbations and transitions, but that your phrasing in this video is putting order above everything else and may attract the "Kata as a scripted fight" kind of mentality. Love your work, please keep it up!
@KARATEbyJesse
6 жыл бұрын
It’s a case by case basis. Let me put it like this: A kata consists of sections that definitely can be rearranged. Within those units there are techniques that can have variation depending on your ability to adapt to any given situation, known as ”Hin Di” in the Okinawan language. Hope this helps! :)

I was skeptical at first but you convinced me. However, I do not know a single karate instructor who teaches what you described as part of the art. Just like guys who have videos on "hidden" techniques in kata. They are only hidden because the instructors aren't teaching it. The meaning of the kata should be know or the purpose of the kata is lost to time.
