I just bought my first Vaer - A3 field white dial. Love it! Plus factors: Sapphire crystal, screw down crown, numerals reach the edge so the 36mm views/wears larger, quick release straps. Overall design -Functional and sleek. Incredibly clear. The thin mid layer of polished steel catches the light nicely. May explore this A5 and the chronometers. The comparable Hamilton field watch does not have a screw down crown.

I agree, this is a compelling field watch. I bought one in their kickstarter campaign a few years ago. This was their first automatic watch model. Personally, I prefer the variant that has the railroad track around the dial. Their nylon 2 piece straps are very comfortable once they have worn in for a couple of days, and their horween leather straps are truly special. Pop this bad boy on a canvas single pass strap from Haveston, and you will be all set for the hottest weather of the year. If you bite the bullet on a dive watch, be sure to get an fkm waffle strap to go with it. These straps are not sticky like the Barton made strap that came with your field watch, and the waffle pattern makes them less sweaty in hot weather. Today, VAER announced the forthcoming release of their "true" GMT with traveller function utilizing the Miyota 9075 movement. This should permit them to make the watch with a total depth of just under 13.5mm, which is far less than what can be done with an ETA movement. You might want to ask VAER about getting your hands on one of these prototypes to review. The problem with VAER dive watches is the difficulty of choosing quartz, solar, or automatic (miyota in USA made models or sellita in Swiss made models). If you are looking at vintage inspired modern field watches don't forget to look at CWC and Smiths (Timefactors). The world is far bigger than Hamilton and VAER alone. Do not look at the VAER dirty dozen homage, or you may end up buying one, as I did. It is a 36mm watch.

this is my favorite of the three Vaers I own. it's like you said, there is just something about this watch that is comfortable, utilitarian, but with just enough "specialness" to make it a perfect everyday watch. when I wear any of my other watches, I sometimes feel like I am "stepping out" on my A5. that's the sign of a great watch!

I saw a Vaer in the wild the other day, on someone’s wrist, and was quite surprised at how premium the dial looked. Just from my quick glance, I took away that the dial was way more JET black than I envisioned, and the super clear crystal helped amplify that. I think it’s like you said…can appreciate it much more in-person.

James, @ 00:48, you were commenting on the watch being a little bit, too simple. SIMPLE is exactly what this old guy with failing eyesight wants & needs. No rotating bezels, PADI, Tachymeters, multi-dials etc for me. My goal, "What time is it?" And can I read it at night with my glasses off? And I'll put a quality leather band on it..... Nice review.

A coworker recently bought this exact watch. I do like many things about it. I love the idea that they are building it in the US (or any other non-China country) and as you said, it has a lot going for it, esp some of the case details. BUT... I just do not see the value. I have a couple Hamiltons and recently picked up a Swiss Watch Company Bunker. I did get might very slightly used but... I just cannot imagine buying the Vaer over the Bunker at their current prices.

I had the Bunker too. I've also had the Khaki. I Sold them, and now I'm just wearing the Vaer. The lume on the Bunker was better, on the Hamilton Khaki the lume was awful with only 5bar water resistance to boot. After getting the Vaer, what sold me is it fits better than the Bunker, and the Lume and water resistance was better on the Vaer than the Khaki. I have @50 watches and the C5 is my everyday watch.

Good review, your criticism of the date window is spot on 👍 . I like the case style, but for me, 38mm would be a better size. However, I would prefer the Miyota 9015 over the Hamilton movement, because it is possible to regulate at home.

I just bought this with white dial. All my many watches are dark, black or grey so I wanted a white dial as an experiment to see if it works. My wrist is 6 1/2 inches and surprisingly the 40mm that I ordered seemed too big. It might be the bright face that gives the impression that it is bigger, but I didn't like it. I ordered the 36mm and it was much better. It they split the difference with a 38mm, it might be perfect. If you like the style and don't need an automatic, the quartz with 40 month battery is well under $200 and can be bought from A***** which is nice if you already have an account. FWIW... I bought the 38mm solar diver, also with two straps and it is terrific. This company is here to stay.

A 38mm would be a great option. However I am surprised that the 40mm did not fit.
@albertsmith9315

@@WATCHingJames It fit, but aesthetically it was weird. The straps on both sides made an immediate 90 degree angle to wrap on my wrist, only the actual watch was on the top of the wrist. Maybe I have an unusual wrist shape, but I have a lot of 40mm-plus divers that look fine.

Cracking watch. James, you should really check out the swc B u n k e r. Titanium case, Sellita movement, 20 layers of super luminova, Swiss made, etc and it’s cheaper. The antireflective coating and the lume are outstanding.

While its certainly a nice watch,$743 can dollars seems a lot for it, i know it has a nice hi beat movement, and it has really good lume, but i think as a field watch that is likely to get knocked about if you actually use it in great outdoors, there are probably better options where you will not need to worry so much about getting it knocked around.

I hate when they color match date windows. Either make them legible (like Vaer did) or skip the window altogether. I have the C5 tactical version and do like it. They have wonderful AR and lume. But at the price for the Miyota I agree look into Hamilton or SWC Bunker for less

I have the C5 Field Black which is the quartz brother to this watch. I love it, the only thing that bugs me about it is the second hand missing the markers. I know it is common on quartz watches, however my seiko sur309 and my casio mtp 1370d don't have this issue.

It is still a fantastic watch. the lume lasts all night, the glass is tough and not a scratch and the bands that they come with in my opinion are fantastic and the buckles and hardware they use are a lot better than other stock and some aftermarket straps where buckles are thin and cheap. @@WATCHingJames

the case shape and looks look much like my older maratac big pilot watch although that is at 46mm or 45mm case diameter , the case shape is alike and the glass is likewise also domed slightly and ain't flat like most field watches. (maratac is also american made i think) i always prefer any field watch or pilot watch to have screw down crown for all purpose wear (GADA purpose) just in case one might need to submerge it into water and have at least 100 m WR despite field watches or pilot watches typically are lower in WR and classic ones aint even water resistant and merely splash proof.
