The skill ceiling part is so true. I first learnt to surf on an Australian combat surf server in 2015, and for the half a year or so I played it, there were always consistently new/bad players online. Nowadays when I get the rare urge to surf, every player on the few remaining Aussie servers are experienced/have been playing for some time, making any new player feel immediately outmatched by everyone.

The movements on the so-called "combat surf" are a dance, beautifully performed by people who really know how to surf, but that's the main problem of combat surf - the people playing it, only a few understand its true beauty, and most just continue to move absolutely incompetently on the maps and pass it off as some kind of incredible performance, encouraging others to do the same, and kill this once wonderful game mode. In today's realities, combat surf is no longer interesting to more experienced players who have spent an incredibly large number of hours on it, because it is no longer interesting to compete with someone, taking into account the decline in the level of players on it and the absence of any changes in this mode, although in fact, this game mode is incredibly interesting, and if you look for truly experienced players, mobile, smart, with good shooting skills, then their confrontation will be incredibly interesting and pleasing to the eye, will awaken people's desire to learn how to move as well, think as quickly and calculatedly, and so on, but based on today's events taking place at tournaments, on the public servers, people playing this game mode, counting your incompetence, slowly killing it.

I only understood what your saying by the last sentence and yes I do agree with your last statement about people playing off your incompetence and them being seen as gods because they can surf camp instead of crouch camp… I do agree and the simple solution to this problem is to remove jail im working on a mod to save combat surf don’t lose hope

Tf2 was king. If valve would just keep updating /promoting it there would be a ludicrously big scene for tf2 competitive. It has better versions of all the niché stuff that make overwatch, fortnite, and valorant stand out. On top of the first and to this day best NFT system ever made. If valve pushed tf2 more on top of making their own metaverse where you can wear tf2/csgo items in a vrchat lobby it'd be a top 3 fps game.
@Repster
2 жыл бұрын
I really wonder why valve ended up going so far away from game development. I've heard it has to do with a forgiving internal culture, where devs can basically work on whatever they think is best. But yeah tf2 will always hold a special place in my heart.

Good point. One thing (on some servers) we've done to combat this in recent years is a practice mode you can use to play instant respawn deathmatch with the other dead players while waiting for the next round to begin. Helps new players.

On cs1.6 this was my main gamemode but i feel like it already was ruined in 1.6 when people started surfing around w aks and m4s. The new "era" i guess is something i never got used to because to me most of the fun of combat surf was to either track down a player and try to catch up w him by having better movement or reading his plays, or u trying to out move somebody else. I remember having amazing fights that lasted 5-10min because both or the players were skilled. To me this 100% awp noscope accuracy (at least thats what it looks like) ruins it for me. But hey mby its just me who misses the little part of my childhood

i have always held the best g riv regular players in very high regard. the map combines the requirement of strong surf skills and strong aim skills like no other map - and that what it have given us too in form of incredible surfers since 2009 at least i guess. the map is old as fuck and proves how much objective map quality is irrelevant in combat surf compared to like ... getting the concept right ... the concept of arena combat surf ... something which all mappers have strugled with. but some mapper who lived in a time where the concept arena combat didn't even exist accidentally got the concept right better than anyone! ...

TF2 combat surf in its prime is probably the most fun I've ever had in a source game. Landing liberty launcher rockets (pre-nerf) on opponents half way across the map was so satisfying. Player skill gap was a big issue though, good players can completely dominate the server on arena maps.
@Repster
2 жыл бұрын
Maybe more players overall can solve that, sort of diluting the frequency of really good players on certain servers. Also servers for beginners could solve this too! (Although hard to implement and enforce)
@PanzerTF

@@Repster Yes, having more players on the server helps a lot. I used to run a combat surf server with KSF when CS:GO first released and it retained high player counts. Once we switched IPs, the player count plummeted and people would leave in droves because they couldn't keep up with me.
