A la premiere ecoute, plusieurs sentiments me traversent: une grande surprise, très intégré, un peu surpris, et puis finalement...J'adore!

I don't speak any French, so I'm not up on some of the literature concerning this guy, who's mostly only known for having posters for his gigs designed by Mr. Toluse-Lautrec (it's like Victor Moscoso getting more famous than the rock stars he did posters for). From What I've read in English, he was a major singer-songwriter in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and part of some French scene of pop-folk songwriters around Paris. It seems that there are some similarities and parallels with the singer-songwriters and performers in the world of pop/folk/rock in places like Los Angeles or New York in the 1960s and on- but there's seemingly little (at least in English) written about it. I also know little of the musical roots of the pop/folk/music-hall styles these cats wrote songs in. I've heard that Aristide played some guitar and that there's tablature for some of his songs. A French Woodie Guthrie/ Bob Dylan/Phil Ochs/Bruce Springsteen? P.F. Sloan?

"(it's like Victor Moscoso getting more famous than the rock stars he did posters for)." ...Naw dawg, naw, u got that all twisted. You do realize Andy Warhol designed album covers for the Velvet Underground and the Rolling Stones, huh? Who should be "more famous"in a hundred years, Andy Warhol or the Rolling Stones..Lol That's the kind of ridiculous comparison your comment makes. You need to look a little deeper into the work of Toulouse Lautrec. If the meager "posters" aren't fine-art enough for you, there's plenty of million dollar selling Impressionist oil paintings.

@@chipwalter4490 I suppose I got this wrong by assuming that Mr. Moscoso might be thought of as a really fine artist, himself. I certainly know about Warhol doing the Sticky Fingers cover and so on. My point about this is that when I google something about Mr. Bruant, most of what I get (in English, anyway) are Mr. Lautrec's posters of him and little about his music.

@@ice9snowflake187 Aristide Bruant is the reason why there is a "chanson française" well established as a genre of its own. You just can't say he's just another painting of Toulouse Lautrec lol
