Had Schubert lived longer than 31, he would have become the first composer of all times. Alas! even during the last 5 years of his life, he was extremely ill. He wrote that he was painfully crawling himself from his bed to his desk. I wish Dr. Alexander Fleming had invented penicillin a few decades earlier.

Shubert is born shortly after Mozart is born and dies just two years after Beethoven does. That right there explains the quality of his music. Of course, he was blessed with an amazing gift himself and made the most of it. It really is a shame he had to die so soon, but what he did leave behind was incredible. He's probably the best melody writer who ever lived.

Markel Oar Yes, he was when he was still alive. And worse: he himself thought he is nothing compared to Beethoven! Absolutely wrong but that's how Schubert saw himself ... +MusikPiratCH Yes, to some degree I agree. one of the many traits Schubert's music has as I believe is his music seems to have a better chance to be even accepted by an unmusical ear these days than most of other classical composers, whilst to them maybe Beethoven is too 'serious and harsh', Mozart too 'sugary', Bach too 'complicated' etc. etc., for sure not these great composers fault, but it does reflect what Schubert's music uniquely and magically has.
