I carried lots of these knives for many years. Finally I just had to accept that, despite the obvious beauty and joy of holding/playing with these knives, I am too clumsy. I just got sick of running into walls, doors, door jams, car doors, etc, and bending the pocket clip. Then taking the pocket clip off and hammering it out and waiting to carry it again until my new screws arrived in the mail to replace the ones I stripped. No thank you! I then tried Swiss Army knives for years. I typically forgot they even existed at the bottom of my pocket, and after changing pants I typically had no idea where they went. For these reasons it’s a leatherman on the belt from now on for me! Always there when I need. Never gets caught on anything.

I was stuck between the Para 2 and Manix 2 lightweight. I liked the ergos of the Para 2 better. Ultimately the lock was the deciding factor. The lock on the Para rubs my finger when opening the knife. The Manix ergos are really good, the weight is great and the lock is easy to adapt to. I sourced o e from a local knife shop for $145. I know I could have got it cheaper online, but I wanted to support a local business.

They are throughly out of stock, but my one-and-done would be the Bark River Mini Aurora in 3V. Mid-sized blade, thin enough to slice well, convex edge is strong enough for hard work, 3V is the closest we’ve got to indestructible at the moment, general utility shape is suited for almost any task, can literally be hammered through logs, and it’s classy as hell. Plus, super duper warranty in case I mess it up.

Just one note: the M390 Spyderco Para3 shown here was not a sprint run; it was a DLT Trading dealer exclusive. The distinctions are that Spyderco sprint runs are limited runs available throughout the dealer network and they are single releases. The dealer exclusives often come out in multiple runs, though some dealers, such as BladeHQ tend to do single run dealer exclusives. Another difference is that dealer exclusives are released at an announced date and time, while Spyderco sprints are a hit and miss thing.

@blairtaylor9552

I have to second that. I EDC my native 5 every workday (tho it is special- sprint run/CF/S110V). You never really need any larger SLICER blade than it has, and with the full choil, I also have full grip and full control even with large hands, being 6'-4". It's just small enough to be non-threatening to most of the general public & easily goes un-noticed in the pocket. (PS: I ALSO bought a second IDENTICAL Native 5 sprint; in case I ever lose it I have an immediate replacement!!!). I have a couple larger carries for outdoors/weekends, but not really appropriate during the work week. I sold a BM943 (un-satisfying feel and sound, like a toy, next to any well-built hard use knife). So no desire for Benchmade. Also won't own another ZT- I've had a couple apart and have seen the miniature PB flat washers they used to guide the blade, so not fond of ZT internals at all. I don't like knives that are mechanically marginal and designed to sell on looks alone. I like knives built as well as Hinderer or CR, though I'm not drawn to their particular style. I also prefer having just a few premium knives, over a junk drawer full of less desireables (buy once, cry once).

@@butcheredalive I mean, I've got medium-ish sized man hands, though I usually wear large gloves. It fits my hands well with some room to spare. Especially because it's still available in Spy27, which I've heard is pretty great. I would personally recommend starting with the Para 3 if you haven't had a compression lock knife before. When I thought about it, like really thought about it, I had to admit to myself that the best, "if I could only own one knife" knife it would be a lame victorinox SD. It just fits in to more situations because of its size, weight, and versatility. It's as good in the boardroom as it is in deep "haven't seen another human in two weeks" field work. Second to that I do love my boker spillo.

I love the Delica. It took me a while to get here and I went through a ton if knives in the process, but now I have a collection of Delicas with different blade shapes (several regrinds), steels, scales and clips and I really like them. Great knive to carry. Disappears in the pocket and cuts like a dream.

Save your money , every time you think you what to buy a cheep knife save that money put it aside and when you have five knifes save up buy that more expensive knife you get what you pay for and you will not have five cheep knifes that just sit in a desk drawer. You will thank yourself in the end

Used to be a HUGE Hinderer fan, but had some of their screws strip on me while maintaining the knives. In my experience, CRK has much better made screws. If Hinderer can perfect their heat treatment on screws (if they're even doing it to begin with) then it'll bake them a favorite of mine again. Current EDC is a Seb 31 in S45VN and I keep my 21 nice since I can't get them new anymore.

👍 Good overview of some interesting knives. I cannot argue with your what-if one and only choice. Excellent knife. Having said that, I would argue for these in the less expensive ranges: Buck 110, Victorinox Huntsman SAK, Rough Ryder Reserve Common Stock, Cold Steel AD10, Lionsteel TM1. And, one should not forget the KaBar Mule, or the the original SOG Tomcat. Just sayin’. I was shocked & dismayed that none of these made your list either as the selected knife in these price ranges or one of the alternatives. 😀

I'm still partial to my Sharpe 150, which I bought in 1979 and my Gerber 600, which I got as a backup before being deployed to the Middle-East in 1989. Both are solid workhorses that have been through a lot and are still reliable.
