@ Scott with Dallas Paint Correction & Auto Detailing: For an amateur detailer using the 6 in. 5.7 Amp Heavy Duty Dual Action Variable Speed Polisher from Harbor Freight, what pads would you recommend?

Good question!!
@jdisdetermined

Robby C whatever you do, do NOT use the HF pads with the 6" installed backplate, the plate extends further than the pad backing and you will chew up pads like crazy. Their are "fixes," but nothing I'd feel comfortable working with. I'd also recommend you strongly consider buying a 5" backplate, like the $10 Astra on Amazon, and use 5" pads. Smaller surface area gives the budget DA some extra cutting power and they're much more forgiving on curves, edges, small spaces etc.. The HF is a great machine for the money, but not a powerhouse. So for heavy duty defect removal you will need a microfiber cutting pad. Meguiars is a safe bet, and keeping with the simple theme I'd comfortably recommend a set of their compound, polish, seal/wax foam pads as well, along with their 105 and 205 compound and polish. That system is capable of serious defect removal and a fine finish. It's predictable and reliable, widely available, affordable, and has years of proven results. It is still my go to, and I've used it with the HF machine so I know what it is capable of.

Hey Scott, I’m getting a DeWalt dwp849x which is not a DA it is a Rotary polisher. Would you do a video on one of these? Or, do you or any of your viewers have any words of wisdom on just a rotary polisher? There a tons of videos on DA polishers. Not a whole lot on rotary. I’m just a driveway Joe looking to do paint correction on my neglected car.

Everyone starting out in their journey of paint Correction needs to see this video, everything you say is 100% correct, I experienced the pad getting extremely hot and creating sink holes some have gone as far as destroying the pad, the pads with the hole in the middle are the best and only kind I use, once again thank you for sharing your knowledge

I’m trying to understand what you are recommending. I don’t do this for a living. Accordingly I listen to other more experienced people. You recommended the harbor freight polisher but told us to throw away the backing plate, buy a 5” backing plate and 5 1/2 “ force pads. This video says to use the same size pad and backing plate with a thinner pad. As a result I’m confused and need clarification.

oh now i understand your confusion...i was sure i mentioned long throw polishers like the Rupes 21MM throw and how they can heat the surface of the paint and how that could be a problem...i don't watch my videos after i upload them, did i not talk about the long throw polisher like the Rupes 21????...i hope that helps with your confusion but I'm also sure i talked about the issue of long throw polishers as well and how they heat up the surface of the paint and how this pad will help with that issue...let me know Mark if i failed to mention that point within the video:)

Dallas Paint Correction & Auto Detailing Begs the question as to whether the pads offer advantage for the Harbor Freight (?)
@n3ro209
5 жыл бұрын
Mark Silverman the Harbor freight polisher and the one in this video are two completely different machines. The one in the video is a long throw polisher that builds up more heat, now he’s talking about an issue with the backing plate and pads for the rupes machine which is not an exact fit. He brings up the Americana global pads which ARE an exact fit for the rupes backing plate, even has the same holes in the same location to reduce heat greatly. This has nothing to do with harbor freight machine or using 5.5” pads. Different set up for different application.

What pad do you use to polish down to your original color of your vehicle. I used a wool buff pad and it didn't work good it generated more heat when I put pressure to the pad and I had my Ultimate polisher I got to 6 and I saw a little spot that I got my paint polished to where it looks like the original color but it took too long on a small area. I need a pad that cuts down to the point fast. I was using Meguairs Ultimate polish too. I just want to get the right pad to use.

From day one, the biggest problem is that Rupes developed a system for people only interested in the tool technology (large orbit). If they try the "system", the end user has no clue how to approach it. None. So the end user does what comes natural, and tries to use their system in a manner that's familiar, often with less than remarkable results. The only reason I figured out how to use it, was because of forums, and interfacing with people from the company on FB, and finally practicing on scrap panels. So without that insight, it's a long road to hope. I guess it's a moot point if someone hasn't even experimented with it. I mean, the first thing people do with it is put a washer in it, and then wonder why the pads are shredding, and compound is slinging with their blue combo. From there they quickly move on to more familiar territory. To be clear, this isn't a slight on the end user, but an illustration to where Rupes could have better educated technicians on EXACTLY how they intended the use of the "system" in it's entirety. I'm comfortable now with it to use it in a production environment, but if I can get away with the PC, I'll do it. For the record, I've never had the plate on a Rupes cut in to the pad. There might be a millimeter from the edge of the plate to the outside edge of the pad backing - on the Duetto. I also brought back the Flex 3401. I did too many R.V.'s, and industrial trucks with a rotary/PC last season, where the 3401 would have gotten me home faster.

i guess you have the magic backing plate...also worth noting the face of the rupes pads are way to big and chamfered so when placed on the backing plate, the weight of the machine can't distribute that pressure evenly across the face of the pad so that you are more effective and efficient with your cut or polish..the rupes pads also create a lot of heat on the surface of the paint so in return the abrasives within your compound are just ROLLING across the paint and not actually cutting the paint or being as effective as they can be...many pros like myself have known and seen this issue but many don't discuss it because perhaps they actually sell the machine to the buying public and make profit, but more and more are beginning to discuss the issue and see when using a 21mm throw machine, we have to figure out a way to lower the heat they create on the surface of the paint and americana global pads seem to work really well with this issue:)

To each is own👍 but in this world of pads and products there is no “best” out there... everything in this business has its place for use. Rupes polishers have a system that should be followed for there best results.

i agree but I'm tired of turning a 4 hour job into 6 because the rupes stalls all the time:)..but i have a lot of experience with a rotary so i never really see the need for a dual action polisher because i know they were all designed for paint enhancement and not TRUE paint correction...but if you want perfection i guess use the rupes and just allow for more time needed..im cool with that as well but i have a business to run so i can't sit and wait for rupes to catch up but i understand why a lot of guys with very little experience and fear the rotary would love the rupes:)

thats my point you moron:)..you actually do understand that the rupes was never designed for paint correction and its actually a FINISHING tool..lol..i couldn't agree with you more by picking a REAL tool to perform the heavy cutting and follow up with a rupes for your final polish...when using the rupes with a soft pad and with a finish polish, little pressure is needed and in return you are using the tool as it was intended:)..so please spread the word that if you're trying to do TRUE paint correction its probably best to use another tool besides the rupes as you already do yourself:)...thanks for driving my point home!!...you have to be the biggest moron i have ever met Aaron, you try to say one thing and when its all said and done you actually say its not the best tool for DEFECT removal:)...i say it all the time and people disagree all the time, but when you spend over 400 dollars for the tool and you have been seduced by my industry, its just so hard to swallow and see the truth:)

Use an IR temperature gun to see which runs cooler and which burns out product or clear coat

Two totally different things. Menzerna FG400 is diminishing abrasive technology and finishes down better. M105 uses small micro abrasive technology that does not break down. IMO the FG400 has it beat in overall finishing quality. Oh and the dusting thing as others have mentioned

Ok guys listen up . I work for the biggest used car dealership in the nation it’s rhymes with tarmax. We use rupes buffers and dozens or rupes pads(blue and yellow) per week . That’s all across the whole country. Rupes couldn’t keep up with our demand for pads . They where back ordered for almost 1 month . We started to notice that the pads are much lower quality. They rip apart very easily and they create a lot of swirls .
