Thank you so much. I broke my. caran dache pastel pencil while sharpening it yesterday. This is just what I need.

Thanks for stopping by today! Do you have any pencils in your collection that are temperamental what it comes to sharpening? For me it was the Caran d’Ache pastel pencils. They have gorgeous colors but I dreaded when I had to sharpen them.

Nothing sharpens caran dache I've found. I have a number of blunt pencils that you just cannot sharpen. An electric sharpener took a new pencil first sharpen from full length to just under half. I tried 5 different pencils and once it started doing this it did it to every pencil after. I can't fond swordfish in nz so far

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I don't often write comments, but I simply had to today. I have tried so many sharpeners (including the Derwent electric dual hole, the Jakar, and a couple of crank handle ones) and NOTHING works as well as this one. Fabulous point and NO BREAKAGE on even my Caran D'ache and other soft pencils. I can't tell you what a difference this has made to me! I'm a hobby colourist, and hate the time coloured pencils take to cover effectively and the lack of layering to get highlights and shading (having to reserve your light areas was just NOT for me). Pastel pencils and sanded paper (I scan and reprint everything so that it's on sanded paper - gotta LOVE my Fisher 400) were a revelation to me - except for the fact that I couldn't sharpen reliably. Now I can!!!!

I am so glad! I love working with pastel pencils on sanded paper as well but sharpening was a nightmare. I am glad this helped. Just letting you know that you can buy replacement blades when the ones in your sharpener get dull.

I just got one of these also and LOVE is an understatement! I usually just open it a little, put pencil in and turn the crank until there is no more resistance. The point you achieve is dangerous 😂

I am so glad! I don’t usually sharpen my pastel pencils unless I have to or need a really sharp point for details. 😂 but I sharpened the really well for this demo so you could see the difference.

I think most helical blade sharpeners work like this! I also just discovered it a few months ago, luckily before I jumped into traditional art (I'm usually a digital artist) while I was doing my shopping. I got the derwent super point sharpener. I haven't tried it on my derwent pastel pencils yet, but I have had great success with my generals charcoal pencils.

Thanks for sharing! I believe the Electric sharpener that I demonstrated is helical blade sharpener. So i don’t think that is the only factor in what makes a pencil sharpener good for pastel pencils. It’s motor is just aggressive for the more fragile pencils.

This is amazing I need one for my pastel pencils. I am always breaking my pastel pencils ( derwent, Caron d’ ache , Fabre castell Pitt ). 🎉🎉 Yup I used the stabilio pastel sharpener ( not great ) Also tried derwent pastel sharpener ( not great and would break pastel pencils) This review is great thank you. I will be getting one of these sharpeners 😊

I have the Creative Mark brand that is like this model and very similar to the Derwent helical sharpener. I have had very good experiences with my sharpener with all my pencils. Even my Albrecht Dürer‘s Magnus watercolor pencils yes it does a great job on those big ones too! I just wonder if you have ever tried that brand? I have never heard of this one in your video, where did you get it? I am glad that you have found a sharpener you like! I use the TGALL hand sharpener for my travel pouch, but it is not great on my biggest pencils. Keep creating and sharing your art journey and videos too! Thanks Lauren. Please take care and have a lovely day!

I have tried other Helical sharpers but they were electric and too aggressive to pastel pencils. I haven’t tried the creative mark or the Derwent but they do look very similar to this and probably do work great. This kind of style is so much more gentle on the pencils. I found this one after it was recommended to me in a soft pastel Facebook group I am part of. I purchased it on Amazon (link in the description box).

Derwent has a small handheld pastel sharpener. I haven't tried it, but as it is made by Derwent, it should work on larger, softer pastels. Another possible travel sharpener.

Lauren I bought this and it works great with my Faber Castel but not with my Stablio...it's like it doesn't want to cut the lead once I put it all the way in...or it just breaks off. Do you have any tips and tricks for it? I just got it.
@LaurenWatkinsArt

I don’t know if I have had that exact issue with my stablio but I know for my Caran D’Ache I have to press in the button that releases the teeth and pull them out before it pulls it all the way in because they will get too finely sharpened and break. Maybe try only letting us sharpen it part of the way.

I’ve had to throw away about 5-6 caran d’ache pastel pencils after only using them about 3 times! And I only have even owned about 8 of the caran d’ache pencils, So frustrating. I’ve tried so many different sharpeners and they always break and the cutting method. It’s such a shame because the colours are incredible.

I just ordered this from Amazon (sent from the UK) and the CARAND'ACHE pastel pencils DO NOT FIT! I also tried to sharpen some other pencils and half of them broke. Returning. Won't get a refund for a month! Ugh.

Best way to sharpen pastel pencils is with a cutter and then sand it to make a point. The sharpeners get dull really quickly.

I know but I HATE doing it that way and I know artists with arthritis that struggle doing it that way. So this is a good option. This sharpener has replacement blades if you have an issue with it getting dull.

@@LaurenWatkinsArt I like sharpening my pencils with blade but I've heard, although I don't know if it really works, that if every few pastel pencils you sharpen a graphite one it helps the blades lubricate. Maybe it helps it last longer.
