Great synopsis of Ajijic . We spent 1 month there and it was just as you reported. Fantastic weather . Relatively inexpensive. And lots of things to do . Hiking was wonderful . Met with hiking club at the donut shop Every Tuesday and Thursday and probably hiked 15 days. Americans and Canadians and the local Mexicans were fantastic. Keep having fun , thanks Jay Bowden

We’ve been Ajijic for 4 days now. The people are friendly and the lake and mountains are beautiful. I researched Ajijic for 2 months before coming on this short trip. Here are some things that surprised me though none of them are inherently bad. First, the weather has seemed warmer than I expected. I think that’s due to the high humidity, very bright sunshine, and energy required to walk uphill on cobblestone streets. Fortunately we got one of the rare Airbnb’s with air conditioning but it was out our second night here due to a thunderstorm that took out a transformer. Second, we should have planned more activities in advance. Our first full day we stayed busy looking at the small shops between Centro and the Malecon and lucked out finding a bar with awesome live music that started at 4 pm. After that day, we ran out of impromptu entertainment opportunities. For example, the nice massage and facial spa was already booked solid for the next 3 days. Third, though people are friendly here like in Texas where we’re from, making new friends was not as easy as expected. During our previous 8 meals when we were sitting in restaurants around a bunch of other westerners, no one said hi or smiled struck up conversations with us. Only when I initiated the conversation did people respond. This is the same as I’d expect in Texas but I’d heard so many raves about the friendliness in Ajijic, I had unrealistic expectations. Fourth, Uber’s are not plentiful and taxis don’t drive around looking for customers. The taxis seem to congregate in El Centro so it was necessary for us to walk 10 minutes to get a taxi. Fifth, Ajijic downtown is not as clean and organized as Playa del Carmen or Oaxaca. In retrospect, I should have expected this since it’s much smaller. I also realized once here that the property taxes here are minuscule so having thousands of foreigners live here doesn’t generate much money for the local government to make capital improvements. In conclusion, we still enjoyed Ajijic, and hope our insights help others have accurate expectations.

Mostly people. Friendly neighbors, and friendly people in general is very important to me, although here in Sonora the weather is soooo hotttttt in summer ( nothing that can´t be fixed with AC, thanks God), I really wouldn´t change one thing of living here, besides I was born and raised here and I love living here. Let me tell you that since I was a kid in the 70´s my favorites cartoons were Archie , Blondie and Disney comics, among others (national and foreigners) ...so, you can see a pattern there, LOL, nice and good neighbors all the way for me.

Excellent summary of life here lakeside! We've been here 11 months and love it. I'll echo what someone else said; living in Ajijic can be almost whatever you want it to be. Laidback, slow, and inexpensive. You can do that. Theatre, symphony, opera, and fancy restaurants every night; you can live that kind of life here too. It just takes a short drive to get to GDL to experience the symphony and opera. Theatre and very nice restaurants can be found right here.

As a Mexican I would not want to retire in a place with too many U.S. expats, not because I don't like them, but because they probably drive up the prices. I know that would make me lose out on many great places like Vallarta and Ajijic, but if you look around there are many alternatives..... which I will keep a secret until I retire ;)

Very well put together -- objective and informative. Your insights were good and included disclaimers for your youth and distance from retirement. 1. Elevation can also be a show stopper. I had a relative who was a heavy smoker who couldn't handle coming to CDMX from sea level. 2. The expat concentrations like PV, San Miguel, Ajijic and even San Carlos, Sonora -- or large cities -- tend to have specialized hospitals and medical insurance products oriented toward expats and rich Mexicans. Expensive by Mexican standards, but way cheaper than the US. 3. If you have an FM-2 or 3, you can buy Mexican social security health insurance. The yearly premium for my wife and I is around us$500 per year and includes all medical visits, hospital stays, tests and medicine. No deductibles. No dental or visión care. 4. Medicines are usually way cheaper. I have gout and my medicine costs somewhere around mx$131 for 30 tablets. That would cost between us$71.45 to us$193.40 in the US. Farmacias Similares is nation wide and sells generic medicines at very good prices. They usually have a clinic attached that has consults for mx$30. There are also regional or local pharmacies that can have even lower prices. 5. I passed out one time and my wife called the Red Cross. They came and got me in an ambulance, checked me out to make sure I wasn't in danger, took me in the ambulance to clinic where I was checked by a doctor, given an EKG and medicine. Total cost = mx$500. Now I did that as a Mexican (I'm güero, but speak Spanish without an accent) with a Mexican wife, so I don't know if the price would have been different for a gringo.

It is sad that people ask you if there are too many gringos. If someone were to ask, "Are there to many Mexicans in any given town in the US?" with a tone of disapproval. Good job Kennons. It is interesting to hear your take on the different vibes. Mexico is the greatest place to retire and you can choose your style -- cosmopolitan, cultural, slow, beach, hot, cool, etc. I love the central highlands and the cool, crisp weather but a Vallarta trip once a year has become a must. One thing to say about the well known "expat" retirement areas is that there is a huge range of budget in those areas because of more "gringo" services and food. So, on the low end, if you shop at the local markets, buy your meat, fruit, veg, tortillas, juice, beer, etc. from the local mom and pop stores your are living very inexpensively compared to the US. On the high end you can eat out every night, go to the opera or concerts, partake of all manner of cultural events and spend more, but still not go broke. Another tip is to not only check out various cities/towns, but the individual neighborhoods (colonias) in a town you are considering. Even in San Miguel de Allende the neighborhoods are small, quaint and each is unique. And, they maintain that small town Mexican vibe. The "sophisticated" centro style of San Miguel is only about 7 or 8 square blocks.

If you are considered a resident of Mexico, then you are going to be taxed on your worldwide income, ranging progressively from 1.92% - 35% depending on income level, regardless of your nationality or where the income was earned. On top of your obligation to file and pay US taxes, Mexico has income taxes of its own. For 2020, the national income rates for resident expats are as follows: Earnings in Pesos Rate Applicable to Income Level (%) 0 - 125,900: Exempt 125,900 - 1,000,000: 15% 1,000,000 and above: 30% Expatriates also pay local taxes to their state in Mexico. These rates are different in each state and generally range from 1% to 3%. Capital Gains Tax in Mexico If you are a resident, capital gains apply to worldwide income. Currently, the rate is 25% on the gross amount of the transaction or 30% of the total capital gain. For expatriates, the capital gains tax will depend on the tax cost basis, the type of asset to be liquidated and the sale price.

If we get tired of a big city we may go 30 minutes from Puebla to Cholula. Because of family connections we’ll get permanent residency quickly. I’ll be able to start social security in 3 years, my wife in 8 years but we think mine at around $1800/mo is enough so that we wont touch our retirement accounts. If we do we’ll use the 4% rule or buy a SPIA for extra income. 3 years and counting...can’t wait !!!

You should come to Pachuca, Hidalgo state. We have natural AC, free for everyone and it works all night! Days are warm, but nights are always cold and sometimes even freezing =)

It is- but we are at around 500+ so I would have to find a better way to organize them :) The easiest way to watch them in order is to go to our channel homepage (click our name) and then click "videos" and then they should be sorted by date uploaded. If not- they may be sorted by views but you can just toggle the option for date. In the meantime I will have to think of a way to more easily label the videos :)

Yeah, yeah.. ajijic is super affordable, it is in everyone's budget, a quarter of a million dollars, yes, american dollars, for a decent house on one acre land, 2-3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms.. and no garage.. Yes!!!, isn't that incredible?.. Thank you gringos!!!

Visit Cuernavaca. AKA "The eternal Spring city" It is also considered one of the cities with the best weather in the world. In fact...Barbara Hutton who was the only child of Edna Woolworth and Frank W. Woolworth, the founder of the successful Woolworth five-and-dime stores. Decided to hire experts to determine which was the best place with the best weather. The result...Cuernavaca. Nowadays her Japanese style mansion became the famous Hotel Sumiya.

I'm an "American," and when I go to Mexico, I avoid "restaurants." If I am in the boondocks somewhere, I won't hesitate to drop in to taste the family food at a rustic roadside "restaurante." But if I'm in CDMX, I NEVER eat in a restaurant . . . it's always on the street or sidewalk. Standing up sometimes, especially for lunch. Sitting down on a chair on the sidewalk for dinner. Best food on earth, and so cheap and fresh it's ridiculous! Nice video, you two!

Great info.. I’m looking for a place in Mexico that’s walkable, with a decent library, live theater, and a year round market with fresh fruits and veggies? Ideally temps below 80s. Any suggestions? I have friends that liked Guanajuato but said it’s very crowded. Safe travels and enjoy your yourselves....💃🏽🕺🏽.

Just saw your video on Ajijic. I moved there from San Miguel de Allende and I thought the weather was terrible, hot and really humid. I had to install AC in my house to be barely comfortable. I lived in Ajijic for about 9 months and then moved back to San Miguel. I thought Ajijic was dirty, hot, and relatively primitive. I lived on the lake and the lake smelled. So glad to be back in San Miguel.

More sage advice for expats and mexicans living in the USA, I'd probably prefer Ajijic, because its more off the "beaten path". :)

Hey yall, so something I'm curious about with these ExPat communities in Mexico... What is their source of income to maintain the lifestyle down there? Obviously I know it's a general question, but I'd be curious to hear some conversation on the types of jobs that are available in those areas that Americans find themselves in to keep a source of income.

Rosarito, Baja California. We have a few houses there. We go back and forth. From Rosarito to Ensenada is great. San Diego weather. It’s perfect weather. It’s convenient for us.

We love all your videos and are enjoying your coverage of Ajijic. We spent August of 2017 and the first 4 months of this year in Ajijic. Your experience in August is completely different than the Jan -April experience we had. We felt August was much better because the rain makes a huge difference (lush green hills vs brown) and the traffic is far better. You guys are spot on about the physical challenges of cobblestones and altitude (we're nearing 70). We came to Ajijic after 5 weeks the previous year in Puerto Vallarta to escape the oppressive heat. Bottom line - we fell in love with both places but are going to give PV another chance by staying there in Jan & Feb in 2019 to see if that can become home base during retirement. We just love the vibe in PV as well as the ocean views we had in our Conchas Chinas condo so we're going to try and tough out the heat. We are renting in Colonia Versalles this time in a brand new air conditioned apartment so it will be a new experience. We agree with you guys - PV is just an awesome place! Keep up the fantastic work.

I recommend a nice hotel called Cosala Grand, located at San Juan Cosala not far from Ajijic. It used to be called Villas Buenaventura, years ago. I see in photos that it has changed, but the rooms and gardens are very beautiful.
