Kentucky is a great place to retire. The cost of living is cheap and there are a lot of tax advantages for retirees. Social Security is not taxed. In addition to no income tax on Social Security Kentucky does not tax the first $31k in pensions, 401k or IRA withdrawals per person. That means a retired couple getting the average Social Security payment of $1411 plus a conservative pension of $2000 a month would get a combined total of $6822 without being taxed by the state of Kentucky. They also have a homestead exemption on top of their already low property taxes. The sales tax is only 6% state wide and they don't tax groceries, meds or utilities. Electric rates are the second lowest in the nation and other bills are also low. I lived there for 4 years and it was a great place to live. Tennessee is also a great place to live. Tennessee has no personal income tax however they do tax dividends and some business income, but not pensions 401k or IRA. The main difference between Tennessee and Kentucky is sale tax and vehicle taxes. Both are cheap and both are great places to live as long as you are not in Nashville (great place but expensive) or Memphis (high crime).

Nice list, but California is so expensive now. One has to be well - heeled to live anywhere near the coast.

Cold places may not be suitable for older retirees.

Tuscaloosa ? really? Bozeman is real good, but State College Pa. is clearly the best,so many people have going there for two decades. Home of Penn State, all the sports, hunting and fishing 1/2 hour away. Can drive to the shore,(Jersey) Philly for week or weekend. 4 distinct seasons, clean air, real nice people, white outs, real good Ice Hockey, minor league baseball in the summer.

I don't believe college towns are good places to retire. Landlords will increase rent prices due to the demand from retirees & college students, then looking for another place to rent might be almost impossible. Then you have to deal with all the bars & clubs, traffic, then worrying about driving at night, cause of a lot college student's driving drunk which can lead to a car accident.😫👎
