Wow, after 4 hours of searching, reading, five beers, one bathroom break - my search has ended. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. your review was honest, clear and extremely helpful - and then when you put it on the 500AH that I'm also buying , , I said praised the Lord. I just ordered the Oben with three extra plates - now I need a couple of aspirins. You Da Man!!

The problem I see with your expensive setups is that time should not be an issue. I, for instance, am a blogger and need a quick release for my FRD X3000 action cam and also budget point a shoot that the screw is on the side of the camera so the Manfrotto's system is good because I can use the whole slide as support. It is not fair to critique the former with a latter. Both have great perks on their own.

The funny thing is that the Oben QRA-R2 is nearly a complete copy of the Manfrotto RC2 system. The only difference might be the side angles of the plate. Most of Manfrotto's tripod heads for photo equipment come with the RC2 system as standard. Look at the Manfrotto 323 quick release plate to see an example. This doesn't have the leveler but the rest is the same.

One thing that I noticed was that the Manfrotto release plates have a screw in the bottom that puts the whole camera in a tilted position. It's very slight but it makes a difference when you want to have level shots.

They have shorter 501 plates than the one you compared in the video. The shorter 501,plate is best because the extra length under the lens will allow for longitudinal balance on a tripod head with chunkier/heavier lenses.

if you just wanted a smaller plate, there is the Manfrotto brand R C 2 system; it's METAL and you get all of the advantages of the system you describe, + it's NOT a Chinese knock off or poor quality attempt, so there is support for this product, and if you change heads, you simply order a Manfrotto head with this system's QR base as the top plate of the head. ALSO there is ONLY the d ring for the screw, so no tools are needed !!

Plastic will age with time metal is metal !!

You have discovered the Manfotto RC2 plate system which might be older than you. You also say the Oben is a one step release which it's not unless you ignore releasing the safety catch first. This is exactly like the Manfrotto RC2 which has a two step release as a safety feature, though it can be released in one step. Some RC2s include bubble levels (323 RC2). There's also the Manfrotto 394 QR system just like the RC2 but bigger, for large cameras, and includes bubble levels. Even further, Manfrotto do a large Arca type system for video like the one you dislike but is a 'one step' quick release. The Manfrotto's are also metal. You can mount your camera as you have but that's not the way you'd normally mount it. The release catch goes to the back and not the side where it's awkward to release. The RC2 plate even has the word 'FRONT' stamped on it to guide you. cheesycam.com/manfrotto-577-501pl-plate-on-new-manfrotto-mvh500ah/ www.manfrotto.com/uk-en/quick-release-plate-adapter-394/

Thanks for your polite response. A few comments: 1. The Oben system can be opened in one motion because of the safety trigger design. You can't use the safety on the Manfrotto unless you complete two separate steps. 2. One of the big issues with the RC2 system is that the receiving end is not flat, which limits what you can do with it. The Oben, on the other hand, has a completely flat base. 3. The plate can be mounted in either orientation. The bottom of the plate shows two arrows, so it's up to the user.

@@AlchemyVisualyoutube I think there's confusion between which plate systems are refered to. When you refer to one and two steps you seem to refer to the difference between the little Oben and the the larger video head (not the RC2). However, you say (further down the comments) that the RC2 (the equivalent to the little Oben) requires two steps to detach the camera. This isn't so unless you make it so. The RC2 plate is easily released with one movement (difficult to explain in words) just as quick as the little Oben. I'm not sure what's meant by the RC2 plate 'not being flat'. Do you mean 'square'? i.e. it can only be mounted in the base one way? If so, I'm not sure there'd be any difference in use unless it wasn't on a ball head. To re-orientate the camera 90 degrees you'd just rotate the ball head, no need to remove and re-insert the camera.
@AlchemyVisualyoutube

@@mgml Nope, no confusion here. If you want to use the safety feature on the RC2, it requires two individual steps: one to unlock the safety, one to release the camera. The oben combines these into one motion by having a separate "trigger" within addition to the main release. This means you can release the safety and release the camera in one motion. The RC2 base is not completely flat. It can't sit on a table or a glidecam and be flush ("level"). This is a major design flaw.
@mgml

@@AlchemyVisualyoutube Thanks. I don’t wish to get into a ‘yes it is, no it isn’t’ thing, I appreciate people’s efforts to make photographic videos so I’ll sign off here. If your RC2 is the same as my RC2 then it can be released (as you put it) in one motion. It’s as quick as you release the Oben at 3.48. No fancy technique required, simply use your index and middle finger together in one motion. Two steps not required unless you want to use two steps but even then it would take only half a second longer to release than the Oben. Still not sure what you mean by “the receiving end/the base not being flat”. Not sure that’s a ‘major design flaw’ though it might not suit your purpose. Have a nice day.

@@AlchemyVisualyoutube My RC2 heads (with the exception of a single one) uses a near identical 2-lever setup to the Oben and the plates even look to be thinner and more flush than the Oben plates you show, allowing both my cameras to sit completely flat against a table. I feel you might be thinking of a different type of plate (perhaps the Arca compatible one they released with the photo Befree models?)

I got the 502ah fluid head and found the plate mechanism, while fast to get off, isn't convenient for the a6400 as it still covers the battery/sd slot. I then bought the manfrotto 323 quick release, but it comes into conflict with the 502ah's head after you've attached it to the long plate, and as such you can't fully slide it on. So THEN I got a camplate multi-hole thing to attach the 323 to and then attached that to the 502ah plate. That works! However, I'm now getting Arca Swiss compatible plates and receivers so I can have a universal system from the main tripod to a little tripod or dolly, slider, or to gimbals or whatever. Worst thing is, I really like the 323 system due to the cool locking mechanism and how sturdy it is. I'll def though, have to give that quick release you showed in this video a look. Can you put the link in the description?

Im still try gin to figure out what the metal thing is in the front of the plate that is spring loaded? I have 3 of these I use but I still don't know what its for lol. I took it off on one of them. None of my gear was compatible with this QR system but I do like you do and just screw it on to the existing plate. So far I like it better anyways because it lifts it higher so it doesn't run into any of my lenses.

Agreed. As I post this, the Neewer is definitely above half the price of the Oben, but it's still substantially cheaper, made of Aluminum, and Neewer is a known commodity whereas I hadn't heard of Oben before this. That said, many thanks to @Alchemy Visual for putting me onto this - great discussion of the need and a potential solution. The comments here have also been helpful, and, in addition to the Neewer, I'm looking at the 3Pod QRB-01 mentioned by another poster. Similar, but perhaps even more compact. I'm grabbing one of each and will choose one for future use as needed.
