It pays a good homage, cannot deny it. It’s a very “clean” sounding analog chorus. Very lush, but it doesn’t drown or overpower your tone either

I think it sounds great. Definitely seems brighter. I’ve really been into the Mad Professor Doublemoon, I got, after really trying quite a few differebt chorus and flangers. It’s all analog, with control abilities to get many chorus, flange and double or together options. No volume, so it drops a bit, but I have a clean boost for that, but it does have a tone control to darken or brighten things.

I'm too simple for this. Two amps, wet dry, in, out, and around, back in again and into my computer. I truly appreciate that some folks do all this and get INCREDIBLE dreamy tones. Maybe some day I'll go down this road but for now all that makes my hair hurt.

Only the delay and reverb are after the amps. Everything else, including the chorus, is just stereo in front of the amps. The Reverb and Delay (wet/dry/wet) are mixed in parallel (like you would in a mix bus in a recording studio) after the amp and before the speaker.
@melhakenson8426

@@VertexEffectsInc Some people just dont have the experience yet to understand wet/dry/wet. It is kind of hard for me to believe in this day & age a musician has never used a DAW but i see alot, and i mean alot, of people that get confused by wet/dry/wet and dual mono setups. I guess its easy for me to say though considering i owned a true recording studio in the late 90’s thru early 00’s (until the home studio boom put me out of business) and have been playing music for 30 years.
@VertexEffectsInc

@@melhakenson8426 Wet/Dry/Wet came from the recording studio...guitar players basically wanted a tailored recording rack for themselves to get all the sounds they could call up during a session. It was also helpful pre-ProTools days as none of the processing was printed so you always had the dry track if the producer wanted to do their own processing to it after the fact. This all probably seems basic to you since you came from the recording studios where this was all commonplace.

I own one of the 80's original ones. It came with no manual. As I understood it, this is the product that TC used to start the company. The sound quality is phenomenal, and what I've seen it often used for is to split a signal to drive two parallel amps the way Eric Johnson used it to drive two Fender Twins for the clean sounds in his multi-amp rig. With this pedal you get stereo, but it is not pronounced. The input gain function beefs up guitar input signals which can improve amp tone from weak pickups. Sadly, I sold an Arion chorus to buy it, and nowdays the Arion is quite sought after also! Oh well!

Future videos? Reverb, if anyone ever makes one pedal that does everything. Reverb drives me crazy - short trip! I have a ludicrous number of pedals. Polara, RV-500, RV-6, RV-7, Topanga, True Spring, Immerse, Blue Sky etc. They all do something well but none of 'em do everything. I should sell what is not on a board and buy a Big Sky I guess but I don't think it does a convincing surf-drip, does it? The whole MUST HAVE list would be: A Fender bright spring surf DRIP (without the Boss '63 harshness) - A Rockabilly Room Setzer-ish vibe - A Plain Spring with plenty of tweakability from prominent to subtle - A Chris Isaak 3D ambient wash - A wide stereo field that adds dimension to stereo delays without overpowering them - Everything available as a preset. So yeah - not a tall order at all. Last night I got a crazy good surf sound by putting the Topanga in front of my Marshall MG250 stereo combo. It's own onboard stereo reverb and stereo delay brought out the Topanga's surfy-ness and made it 3D. So, two reverbs going on. I have never found one pedal that could do that sound that well. The Polara, in the MG stereo effects loop, will do an absolutely stunning Riviera Paradise sound. Alas, no one pedal could do everything. Keeley's Halo does a great job of being THE one pedal for delay and I grabbed one immediately. Brett Kingman gushed about it - rightly so, IMO. But I can't find that same all-in-one package in a single reverb pedal. RV-500 comes closest. Stacked reverbs? Paralleled? Too crazy!

A video on vintage rack gear and guitar would be pretty cool. Hey Mel! Thanks for watching! Yes...there are some cool reissues and replicas coming out. The video last week on the RV-7 Reverb is a great one if you want the Lexicon sound that's more characteristic of guitars and not what was used on Blade Runner (CXM 1978). Equally, I always thought it was strange to use a pedal version of an 1176 and then use if first in the chain? What guitar player ever used an 1176 before the mic? I do like the Free The Tone 2290...in mono just like the OG version. I don't think anyone's fully nailed the Tri Stereo Chorus, closest I've found is the Red Seven Lil Wave, but it's mono. I typically just use the DC-2W these days for chorus and use it in the Dimension D setting. For the EXH Electric Mistress, I think Retro-Sonic makes one as does Past Effects.

Thanks for this amazing video. Although both pedals sound very similar I think the older generation pedals are better for the hardcore true analog tone seekers. But the old units have already reached their goal by creating iconic sounds and value. Since the new item is a new item, the companies have to apply changes to reach some new customers. 😉
@VertexEffectsInc
2 жыл бұрын
Well...both are true analog. But yes, there are some differences, no doubt. The newer version is brighter, but also the older versions are often out of calibration and are all over the place so it's hard to say how they might stack up if all are calibrated and new (but we don't have a time machine). I think the big advantage of the new version is the 9VDC for sure. There are some "vibe" and "vintage" aspects of the original that can't be fully re-created, we don't have access to the same BBDs then as we do now, but I think they're in an acceptable range if you want a great analog stereo chorus for $149.

What I like about my original one, is the input impedance, that enables me to even preamplify a passive Fender Rhodes piano - in a clean way. I don´t like the stereo-chorus not being mono compatible, which applies to many stereo chorus pedals, where the other side is just a phase reversed version of the first side. Use the choruses mono out only - problem solved. Only thing: It´s not "stereo" anymore..hmmm... I think all of this can be said for the reissue, too.

The reissue is the same as the OG version as far as how it treats the mono and stereo outputs.

Hands down the original vintage SCF sounds way warmer and smoother. The reissue sounds real bad on the flanger and way more metallic on all 3 modes. I've used different headphones and listen few times. You did great job except for noticing the huge differences 😅

Agreed. Original’s mojo is warmer, and more defined, with virtually no clipping compared to the reissue. You can hear the depth and quality of the 120 vac original on Eric Johnson’s majestic recordings. The 80s really had it!

Any comments on using, setting, evaluating the variable preamp on these things would be welcome. How do others set it in line with a typical series pedalboard? I always set mine turned up about a quarter of the way on.
@VertexEffectsInc

I usually try to set it at unity gain (no boost). Sometimes if you use in an effects loop you might have to knock it down more and make up the gain on the return. The easiest way is to put it in a true bypass loop and A/B it so you can nail the output to unity gain. You can also just unplug it and go direct to your amp to get a baseline on the output level. I would say definitely around 8:00 - 10:00 is typically unity gain (depending on the pot tolerance).

Hello Mason, great video, playing & comparison - thank you for your fine work ! Just a quick question: For pedalboard owners with a pre- and post-buffer (and everything else in between “true bypass”) would this buffered only pedal somewhere in the middle of the chain “mess” with the signal and/or impedances ?! Thanks in advance for your answer & keep up the great work 👌🏼 Regards from Hamburg (Germany) 🤗 Roland 🎸

Been eyeing these, I thought they were about $300, maybe that was just the gold version. It sounds killer! I agree with your assessment of the differences in sound for sure. Maintains the mojo of the original, but yes some differences. Great pedal, liked the Walking on the Moon outro, legit!

Has anyone ever told you that you look like Jack Black? Anyway, great video for I received this first generation pedal as a package deal when I bought a second hand guitar. It came with a Guv'nor by Marshall and a Heavy Metal by Boss (which I was told is also a first generation made in Japan). I mostly use a Boss Gt-1 pedal board and haven't even try connecting those pedals since I barely have the time to play nowadays. When the guy sold it to me, he said that this was Slash standard pedal (except for the Cry Baby)

I suppose if they wanted to insult how I looked, sure. I’m more partial to the Ricki Lake or Rosie O’Donnell comparisons. Sounds like you made out good on that deal. Those old Marshall pedals are worth a bit now! Same with MIJ Boss pedals.

The re-issue is more than just brighter in the upper frequencies. It's almost like there is some aliasing in the signal of the upper frequencies. Strange, almost a harsh element, but I may be hearing things. Are my ears playing tricks on me?

Harsh? No. Most chorus' will cut bass and add top end. For clean tones, that is desirable for me, but I wouldn't call it harsh by a mile.

I feel that if there is a difference it neither makes the new one better or worse . I never listen with my eyes but like every one that says that I am a liar, LOL. I think what would be cool is for you to set up the pedals but let someone else switch them so you have to choose which one is which. That way you only have one pair of ears to listen with. The others will be starring at the camera.😊

I’m an HUGE TC Electronics user-almost all of my pedalboard is dominated by their gear. I have, like, 9 TC pedals, 1 Keeley Dyno-My-Roto, a Boss DS-1, a Crowther Hotcake, a Caline 10-band EQ, and three pedals whose manufacturers i can’t recall (a 7-band EQ, a noise gate, and a Little Black Buffer). Nonetheless, I’ve never heard of this pedal, and now I’m in love. If only it had a tremolo rather than a pitch shifter… Then again, wish into one hand and shite in the other, which will first fill up? I’m’na pick up one of these pedals . I love the sound of the reissue, quite frankly. Especially with regards to the flanger, the vintage module sounds comparatively anaemic, so for once I’m delighted to purchase the new version without feeling as if I’m ‘settling’. Thanks for a great review, mate.

Yes, didn’t like what the buffer did to the signal so took mine off too, gave it a kinda hard, less forgiving, tone.
@tipston3366

Noticed it too, it compresses a little and adds a little bit of harshness in the upper frequencies, even in bypass. Might be fine or even an improvement depending on your rig. I already had several buffers on my board so it seemed to take away from the tone, so I put it in a true bypass loop. But definitely not a clean bypass on this one.

Mason, is the stereo output on the RI out of phase with the mono output, like the original? I was bummed when I got my original and realized it wasn’t going to play nice with my stereo reverbs, ESPECIALLY the P.M. mode, which is the mode I figured I’d use the most. I assume your wet/dry rig gets around this, since your reverb pedal is processing a mono signal.
