What I love most about Riverdance is how it helped so many young Irish girls and boys realise that they had a tradition that had such power and such beauty and that they wanted to experience it too. That is a powerful thing that a tradition gives to the people who learn and practise it. I've seen it happen in Scotland when the rock band Runrig helped people see their Scots Gaelic heritage as something cool so that the young people no longer saw it as something to apologise for. Tradition has so much to give to the people of its culture and we all get to enjoy as it is practised before us.

It makes me feel so old to remember this performance when it first happened, it was a global phenomenon at the time and it has endured the years to still be recognised as one of the best performances of all time. Makes me feel very lucky to have seen it when it happened... but old...

Thefre's ojust something about watching Jean Butler. All those dance moves are incredibly athletic, yet she makes them look effortless. And when she does leaps, she seems to just hang in the air for longer than gravity should allow....she bloody well floats on air.....amazing!!!

I've never seen something like this up thát close, but can understand it did ;) Also hard to understand something like this just didn't exist. Oh how I wish to have been a little older when this thing got off the ground. I was only 6 when the ESC interval act was brought to the world, but can remember Irish dance being on the TV SOOO much (or I just remember it that way because it was so impressive)

Buckarpp543--I used to show this to my second grade class of inner city ghetto/barrrio students every St. Patrick's Day (we weren't allowed to have parties). Those little guys would be out on the blacktop trying to emulate the dancers. When Flatley produced "Lord of the Dance", I added that to end of year celebration. The students wanted more--so I added "Cats" to their end of year celebrations. After the giggling over the unitards ended, they were spellbound by the athletics of those dancers, too.

It's such a shame - - Michael is the best in the world at Irish Step Dancing - - but you can see the expression on his face that he knows he's the best. There are tons of people on the planet who are the best at whatever their passion and talent is, but without the conceit that he exhibits.The show is astounding and he and Jean rightfully deserve praise, but every time the camera has to focus on him, it almost ruins it for me. My wife is the best hospice nurse on earth. Just sayin.......

All such beautiful, talented dancers. But I hope Michael Flately regrets his choice of egoism, a mullet, and a pirate shirt. He ruined Irish dance, with all the young girls wearing those ridiculous wigs and makeup. It's a cultural, traditional thing. Yes, he brought it to the world, but at what price? I watch the Irish Dance World Championships now and they all look like cheerleaders from Dallas. It has lost the wholesomeness. It is meant to be a cultural movement, to save the Irish traditions and culture, but he ravaged it for profit. I just wish he had not so commercialized it.
@jocelynharris-fx8ho

I think he looked great with the mullet but I've always loved long hair on men. I do agree that in an attempt to "modernize" Irish Dance, he took it too far in the other direction. Other than Lord of the Dance in Dublin of 1996, his shows have become cheap, trashy and sleazy; especially with the women dancing scantily clad, even to point of looking like underwear,, the men are dancing bare-chested, the stage graphics have nothing to do with Ireland or the Celtic tradition and the music has become like hard rock/ heavy metal, instead of those beautiful, soothing fiddles, pipes and flute. Thankfully, he's now retired and Riverdance has outlasted him and his assault on a beautiful art form.
