Great tips! Your slider movements are super buttery smooth too! The only quick tip I'd add would be shooting in aperture priority mode for long day-to-night or night-to-day timelapses with big shifts in light, along with a prime lens that has a manual aperture ring so the iris blades aren't moving between shots or creating a tiny bit of flicker... and then letting the camera ramp the shutter speed up or down. You probably already know this, but AP's also really helpful when making hyperlapses that may start / finish in two completely different directions :)

So with manual settings, how do you account for changes in exposure caused by changing light? If you're trying to shoot a sunset for example, then the correct exposure at the beginning won't match at the end and the scene will be too dark.
@albaezstudio6622

Im guessing he is using the ND and then trying to match in post. I would also like to know more about the settings for that type of scene.

I believe you need to shoot in shutter priority , S or TV setting, and then allow the camera to automatically adjust the iso and or the aperture as the light changes. You may need to set a negative -2/3 exp value as well.
@leocarstens3555
7 жыл бұрын
If you want to do day to night/night to day timelapses its sometimes better to do it in aperture priority mode otherwise you have to adjust your exposure manually all the time. Even though that might cause a little bit of flicker, you do not have those abrupt changes in exposure that you will get when adjusting manually. For removing the flicker you can use LRTimelapse for example.
@mattih

Never had flicker ever whilst shooting aperture priority, although I do cover the viewfinder of my camera as stray light through here is what causes your aperture priority to mess things up and flicker, usually when sun is behind you.

I did a test timelapse today. kzitem.info/news/bejne/2Ihs4HaCeoN5ZKg (boring subject...but that wasn't the point). When I put all of the pictures together, you'll notice that there are noticeable jumps in the video. I think the Ronin RSC2 moves, stops, moves, stops, etc. And I was controlling the picture captures with the camera itself. I don't have the cable that connects the Ronin to my Sony A7S3. I think maybe the fact that the Ronin is moving when pictures are being taken might be the reason for the jumps (the Ronin movement isn't synchronized with when the pictures are taken). Do you think that's why there are jumps/glitches in the final video?

Is there a way to get your slider to only move while not exposing or is there any slider that has the software to do it? Say 2sec exposure, Frame every 4 sec, so make it move only the 2secs in between. Would this even make any sense? I'm not really sure but would expect the seperation between moving/static objects to be better?

Hey so if I timelapsed a face painting, would the shutter speed be better in a higher setting? I feel like it would so that the face isn’t blurry from movements. But it’d also be cool for the painters hand to be blurred or less visible.

I think that location scouting and composition are equally important as well. Parallax in boring location is much more boring than simple steady timelapse somewhere in cool spot. So start out, do not buy all the expensive gear yet, just have fun and try different settings - for example if you shoot clouds, shutter speed does not matter that much and you can even go without ndfilter IMO.

Another good trick for TL on the 70D is to hit your shutter f-stop button, and while holding it, loosen the lens slightly so the pins can't talk, and the lens will be locked at your chosen f-stop. Don't forget to tighten back up after your shoot! Shoot TL with the lens loose, in that way you also lock in your depth of field and rids your final video of that annoying flicker effect at higher shutter speeds.
