If you add onions and cheese, you’ve pretty much got Uova Al Purgatorio (Eggs in Purgatory). They’re both great dishes, very similar.

He is right. Onions do not add anything to a Shakchouka other than a caramelised taste. Yikes, does not go well with runny eggs. People who like onions in their Shakchouka, had a mum that could not cook.

My mom makes this for me every week! It's super delicious, she adds both cheese and onions though. Also, we don't eat it with Pita bread,Roti, or Paratha, we simply eat it with some warm rice, always hits the spot

One thing that can elevate your shakshouka: use sweet peppers instead of regular bell peppers. That way you don't need the onions to make it sweet

Shakshuka is literally supposed to be made with any leftovers veggies from dinner you have from the night before. It was created as a way to turn leftovers into another meal. For this reason, there is no 1 type of shakahuka. It is not a hemogenous dish.
