Excellent video! I tried all three methods on a ASI533mc image of M78. Method 1 reduced the stars the most, but had a bit of a bullet-hole look. Method 2 was better in that regard. Method 3 had the least impact on very faint stars, and although the reduction in size was the least of the three methods, it looked more natural to my eye.

I've used the "Make Stars Smaller" action in Astronomy Tools v1.6 for Photoshop, but that tends to create "webbed stars" after a run or two. Unfortunately, many of us use Photoshop and the method would apply differently. Would it be possible for you to make a video to apply these star reduction methods for Photoshop? Thanks for breaking the great news. Along with Bill's new PixelMath star-reduction I have a request... I'm hoping someone will incorporate into it some star-shape improvements too! Among numerous other scopes I'm using 8" and 11" HyperStar SCT scopes and the 8" + HS in particular is giving me star-shape trouble. Even after a great deal time and effort calibrating I still get corner-stars that have a bit of comet-like distortion with an APS-C ZWO 2600. I have tried to eliminate the issue including adjusting for camera sensor-tilt and also using David Ho's 'Hotech Advanced CT laser calibration tool' but still some star distortion exists - maybe it's a less than perfect HyperStar lens but I'm hoping someone can help solve this with star-shape software. I do not like the results I get with deconvolution. I'm not trying to cheat but I bet there's a bunch of folks that would appreciate this as a Pixinsight addition. I put a bug in Russell Croman's ear, I bet he could figure it out... Keep up the great work!

Bummer...unfortunately Bill's star reduction really doesn't fix distorted corner-stars other than tighten and diminish them. But thankfully it does give way better natural looking stars that the old way of combining starless+stars in PixelMath. Now to figure out the best way to do most post-processing and aggressive stretching before using Bill's star reduction. If you figure that out please do a YT video. I used to remove stars early in the processing but now not sure.

I lost something in the flow. I use StarX to extract stars after I first stretch an image. I process image without stars working on nebulosity, background, noise, color, saturation, etc. and recombine stars via Pixel math when image complete. (I may also process stars adjusting color, saturation,etc. before recombine). I then use EzStar Reduction. Do I then use this process to do star reduction at this point after I have a nearly completed image after recombining extracted stars?
@billblanshan3021

Yes, just use this tool for star reduction only. It's fairly a fast process to do. You can save that as step as your last operation if you want. You can even automate the workflow in a simple process container
@lukomatico

Hey Sid! :-) You've got it my friend, you would get great results using these tools right after recombination of your image, I would personally simply replace EzStarReduction in your workflow with these tools and with only very minor time spent dialling in the strength/choosing which method looks best in you should have a superb outcome in very little time 🙏hope that helps! I dont understand why you would want to reduce the star count?
@anotherastrochannel2173

Cary, I guess it all depends on your image especially if it's overexposed in a star field which the stars will be very bloated. We use star reduction tools to help bring the stars back to a lower exposure size that allows the objects behind them to be more visible like nebulas or galaxies, etc.
@lukomatico
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Cary! As Bill mentioned there, it's a bit of a personal taste thing, - if you maybe photographed a globular cluster then you'd very likely want to leave the star field alone - but perhaps if you imaged a faint nebula and the stars were overpowering the image, it could be a good aesthetic choice to tone them down a bit :-) Hope that helps! This is not the best method and like always its very situation dependent. Firstly, the big issue with these methods are the saturation artifacts of the stars… This essentially renders this method useless for my workflow. In the very end, as starnet or star x got so good at this point, simple Morphology or just seperate star vs nebula processing work best for me. Yes…both methods I mentioned run the risk of shrinking background galaxies, but so does the method explained in the video. I just want to mention that claiming something to be the best is never a good idea as usually it isn‘t, im not claiming my methods are the best either, but i can tell you that they work better for me than this version!

I appreciate your point of view Stefan my friend! :-) I don't agree with what you are saying, but it doesn't really matter either way - nothing would ever truly be the best at everything - we all know that, I think someone viewing can appreciate the title/thumbnail for what it is, an expression of personal opinion! :-) All the best & Clear skies! Hi, I'm brand new to Pixinsight and have been looking for good ways to process images. I have downloaded the process files and the Rosette picture. When I drag the "starreductionmethod***" onto the picture NOTHING HAPPENS. Am I missing something in the process? ---> OK, I installed Pixinsight again and did a repair installation. Now it works 🙂 And after trying a few settings and processing a little in Pixinsight I get :PixelMath: Processing view: Rosette_Tutorial_Data Writing swap files... 814.125 MiB/s *** Error: No such image: /* Star Reduction using PixelMath, by Bill Blanshan - Transfer Method - V2 */ S= 0.15 ;//

As a grateful and dedicated follower of this channel, I felt a need to share my appreciation with the community. When I first started watching Lukomatico (I believe Luke had 184 followers) I was close to giving up astrophotography. There was something about Luke’s videos that keep me going. Perhaps it was his easy going love of this hobby or maybe his simple, hands on instructions, whatever it was, Lukomatico has been and continues to be the very best channel on the Internet. That said, watching this video with Bill is one more reason why I know my continued understanding and growth is guaranteed. Digging deeper into Pixinsight happens to be my current ambition and Luke’s videos (including this one on star reduction), especially his OSC Hubble Palette videos have been simply brilliant. As anyone who has been following Luke will attest, he’s not only dedicated to ‘us,’ but to working tirelessly to provide top notch instruction and perhaps more importantly, ongoing encouragement to us fledgling students of astronomy.

Hey mate! sorry about the late reply, that's potentially a tough one! - you could perhaps clone-stamp it out with care but it'll be a scientifically inaccurate image then of course, but it all depends on end goal! :-) another option may be a range mask on the problem star, and targeted de-stretching to kill it a bit! Good luck!

Very impressed with the work to reduce stars. In Spain, Pixinsight with VAT costs more than €300 and not all of us who are starting out can buy this software because we first need to buy a guide tube, a camera, a flattener, etc. Since Siril also has PixelMath, would it be possible to apply this in Siril as well, would it be possible or is it too complicated? I would ask you to consider porting these routines to Siril. Thank.
