The Ferengi are hyper capitalist due to a religious doctrine ingrained into their culture. The Volus are hyper capitalist out of necessity. The Volus can't survive out of suits on other worlds and don't have even a slightly decent military. They need to rely on the council and specifically the Turians for protection.

I think Grunt, a krogan who's born in a labtube, literally, is similiar to Alexander, Worf's son who has lived his life outside of Klingon culture, but wants to part of it. In the end, both characters find their places in their own kind after proving themself to their people.

Dr. Chakwas is similar to Dr. Beverly Crusher, EDI is quite similar to Data, (who also shares similarities to Mordin) Shepard has the battle his clone in the Citadel DLC, similar to how Picard fought his clone in Star Trek Nemesis. The Batarians are quite similar to the romulans, both races are very xenophobic, practice slavery, have a caste system, and isolate themselves from the rest of the galaxy.

One kind of cool thing that Mass Effect did in my opinion was to turn the idea of the Federation on its head in a few ways. In Star Trek, Earth is basically the capital of the Federation and humans are arguably a dominant, overly-influential species. The Klingons in "Undiscovered Country" even call this out, hinting that this may be a common critique among anti-Federation factions. And remember Quark's whole "root beer" scene. Even the Klingon ambassador in Star Trek IV calls Vulcans a "puppet" race of the Federation. With Mass Effect though, humans are very much treated as among the most junior partners of the Citadel alliance, reflecting our more recent discovery of space travel among these older civilizations.

Shepard is the Sisko. Starts as Commander. Has to earn the promotion to Captain. Normandy is the Shepard pimp hand like the Defiant for Sisko (and also small and stealthy). The Normandy even gets blown up and replaced with another Normandy, just like the Defiant. Shepard's home base is always a space station (Citadel, Omega). Shepard works with xenophobic terrorists who declare themselves freedom fighters in 2 (like Sisko works with Bajorans). Shepard leads the entire universe in war against a galactic threat, like Sisko in the Dominion War. Shepard can even lie to the Krogans in 3 to get them to fight in the war, like Sisko did with the Romulans. And Shepard makes a self sacrifice at the end that in at least one ending turns the Commander into Space Jesus (Control).

While Trek is a clear inspiration, I'd say Babylon 5 has a stronger influence on Mass Effect. The Collectors are clearly directly based on the Shadows visually, and there's even an episode of B5 where the lead is 'collected' and the alien ship looks just like a Collector installation. And I suspect they even used the same VA's as B5 for the 'rebuilding database' and Hammerhead VI (the B5 computer voice and star fury A.I.). Then there's B5 itself, which becomes the Citadel in ME, the Earth First plot-lines, and as you mention, the relays themselves. Then there's also Robin Sachs (Zaeed), who had a bunch of recurring roles in the show. Lots of the guest actors you mention also guested in B5. Add to the list the whole theme of cycles of destruction... I'd also suggest that Mass Effect is the best 'Bond' game. You become a 'Spectre', you work for an alt-Blofeld, and Shepard gets to sex up 2 to 3 partners in each game (Bond's usual tally in the movies).

Interesting video i think the femsheo looks like Kirk is a bit stretched but every human mind sees similarities different. It's hard to tell if something is a nod/Easter egg/reference to a Specific series with real life actors if they also work as voice actors and your game needs a certain amount of voice acting that said. As a German who played ME first as a German localized Version with German Voice actors (and unfortunate recastings like Liars from ME1 to ME2, for different reasons, unfit casting, German Maleshep sounds forever like a greasy evil man to me) my first Playthrough in 2015 felt like I was playing Star Trek with a slight piece of Jedi mixed in.

Interesting, definitely interesting. There is also a lot of elements in recent Star Trek series that does this reverse, seemingly taking or referencing elements from Mass Effect. Discovery for example, the uniforms from Season 1-2 look like the parade uniforms in Mass Effect 3, Saru is very much Discovery's version of Mordin Solus, the use of lens flare and Warp drive looing like FTL-drive, Season 3 reminding me of Andromeda (haven't watched season 4 though because Paramount+ won't be available till end of this year in Germany. Thanks a lot, guys. And for all the spoilers for Strange New Worlds...). Or Star Trek Picard which features a Romulan ritual that makes those participating in it having a vision of total destruction of the galaxy via an outside force of synthetic beings. Said beings are in the final episode been helped to enter our galaxy with the help of a beacon... Honestly. That was essentially the Mass Effect Trilogy's main story in a nutshell. Picard vs. the Reapers. And Discovery Season 2 already had a probe that vanished and came back being altered, into a almost squid like synthetic reminding me of the Reapers looking themselves like giant squids.

Although I don't agree with many of your conclusions I admit there will be some deliberate nods. it's been a fantastic video as always. Characters as based on archetypes and distilled personal traits. Intelligence, bravery, leadership, nurturing, innocence. Actors act and most will not avoid certain roles to avoid typecasting, some will have been sought out because of writers or producers have a fondness because of a certain actor or actor's performance in sci-fi, which feels like a human element to your equations. Star Trek is such a huge franchise that many actors have been in it at one point or another. They will be interested in making sci-fi because they watch / play / read it. I think the origin of alien species again comes down to how large star trek has been, so many origin stories and the best ones stick / return / get expanded on. They appeal for the same reasons. Humans have been having relationships with aliens since before Trek, again it is the size of the franchise which gives scope for connections. Again love your work, just playing devil's advocate.

I know many of us seem to have memory-holed it but the Kett from Andromeda has a working parallel with the Borg I would argue (also some Wraith from Stargate) Also the fact that Mass Effect has now been feeding back into Kurtzman era Trek, most notably Star Trek Picard season1, the haptic feedback holograms on Rios' La Sirena looks really similar and then that weird tentacled space squid aliens they avoided Also Discovery's Season 3 finale introduces a conceit that makes dilithium very similar to Element Zero by now having it be capable of affecting creatures in vitro or at least Kelpiens.

You do know that Mass Effect was Bioware's attempt to make a Kotor game without Lucas Arts, right? It's actually a Star Wars game, hence the abilities and powers, a generic force euphemism, there is no force in Star Trek. Bioware did Kotor 2, but didn't want to renew the licence with Lucas. The Dragon Age games are also in the mix, fantasy KOTOR.
@762rk95tp
2 жыл бұрын
Bioware didn't make KOTOR 2. It was made by Obsidian Entertainment. Bioware suggested that Obsidian should develop sequel after they had came up to conclusion that Lucas Arts wanted the sequel faster than they were able to develop one. So Bioware involvement in KOTOR2 was few tweaks to their existing engine and other support work like testing. Obsidian was a new studio back then and it was founded by folks from BlackIsle after Interplay imploded. When Interplay and BlackIsle were still alive, they kinda helped getting Bioware on early days of Bioware and they were basically publisher for Baldur's Gate.
