Omakase is best experienced dine in because they will make it fresh and serve piece by piece immediately and explain each piece to you, the sushi also comes pre sauced with the perfect amount of soy sauce by the chef. There’s a place down in roppongi called tokyo sushi ten, they serve like 20 varieties of nigiri and a few cooked dishes. I never had omakase before and always thought omakase was like a few hundred dollar meal where you never get full, but in this place which was my first experience you’ll be so full you get food coma towards the 2nd half of your meal and it was like 70 or 80 bucks for the entire experience. Of course every piece was a hit.

that uni that you had looked pretty gnarly, i harvest my own and if its fresh it should come out as a solid chunk from the urchin and have a bit of texture to it, not slimey goop. Also old urchin has the "sea flavor" kind of like when you go out to the ocean at low tide. Fresh urchin should taste almost sweet and buttery/nutty.

Man that looked freaking good! Old thread and someone already did an accurate lineup for the nigiri so I won't list it again. Most sushi establishments give more maki because they are able to use the small leftover bits from things like nigiri. Not to say they are bad scraps because they are actually really good leftovers at a bargain price. The tomago usually has mirin in it which is why it's sweet. The price for that tray is very reasonable. Probably the best way to taste test before splurging on the ones you really like.

There's nothing better than eating good sushi for the first time. I had grocery store sushi for years before I went to an upscale sushi restaurant, and it completely blew me away. You can't even compare it to anything you've had before. It may be a bit pricey, but it's 1000% worth the money just for the experience alone. I strongly suggest everyone try it when they have the chance, especially those who claim they don't like sushi based on what they bought at a grocery store.

Sea urchins are invertebrates under the phylum echinodermata. They are closely related to sea stars and sea cucumbers. They are very simple organisms that use numerous small feet to scurry around and eat whatever they can come across. On the underside of their spiky bodies is where their mouth and feet are situated. The part that is eaten by people are the gonads.

I usually have a few krab salad gunkan (the seaweed around the side type like the uni and egg ones here) and a few tamago nigiri (not the tamagoyaki block Ben got) at the start and at the end of my sushi meals. Otherwise, I usually have a mix of salmon, tuna, shrimp (non-raw) and red snapper nigiri as the main items. Eel (unagi), seared salmon and seared shrimp are also nice to sprinkle in, but I don’t go for uni or some of the ‘weirder’ stuff…not even spider rolls (soft shell crab) or salmon skin rolls. Some things aren’t bad, but just kinda make me wish I got more of what I really like. Oh, and inari is a nice ender too.
