But I scratched the band and bezel, so now I have to figure out how to polish them again. :)
@docmarioce31

Respecfully, once you wind an automatic self-winding watch once with approximately 40 turns, you won't have to wind it again unless (in the specfic case of this watch) you take it out of your wrist for more that 80 hrs. Every movement of your wrist makes the rotor spin in the movement and winds the watch constantly. No need to wind it daily.

I love Teddy B's videos, but for me they are a well-presented shop window for his watch business. I think he's honest, but he's an honest salesman which is not the same thing as an honest reviewer. Your channel is a credible review channel with little apparent incentive to shape your review in order to sell me something. For instance, you have just given a very polite negative review of a grandpa watch; whereas Teddy isn't in a position to give a negative review of items that he sells. Your collaboration with Teddy casts a shadow over your review: did that collaboration constrain your review? Is your cut of Teddy's price on the watch shaping your assessment? When you don't take sponsorships or sell watches, you have a certain credibility. Guard your integrity and independence.

Why only consider what these reviewers are saying? People will be sponsored, or otherwise influenced in their own "professional" opinions when reviewing any kind of product. As an informed buyer, you're taking note of this, in addition to the objective research you're doing before you buy. Why ask useless questions like "is your cut shaping your assessment?" Of course it is. No matter how small, it is. But you can't ask these content creators to not take sponsorships or sell watches, because those are revenue streams for them, that's how they keep their livelihood. The glamor of a starving artist, or truth digging journalist wears off real fast when you can't pay your bills. Live in a world of balance, instead of trying to change petty crap like this. I got the green Gentleman for my wedding last year. I love it so much, I got a second, black dial on leather version. AND I got a quartz version for both of my groomsmen for my wedding and they both wear them regularly to this day. Its one of my primary daily wearers, and it's holding up very Well! The movement is still running at about -2s per day. I have recommended the Gentleman to almost anyone who's looking for a GADA watch. The 21mm lug width is a bonus for me personally. I have large wrists so sometimes a 20mm bracelet can feel a bit petit on me. But sometimes a 22mm bracelet just feels like a tank track around your wrist. The 21mm is right in the sweet spot for someone my size for that casual/GADA style daily wearer.

My first watch was a Tissot that my Dad bought me when I was 12 in the 70s. I still have it and it is still fine. You take a top down approach. I however look at it from the other side as a bottom up approach. Before spending any money on such "brands" as Wellington, Vincero, etc., rather invest more money and get a Tissot, Certina or Longines. The two first ones I wear for example in Central America, where I could encounter a spontaneous ownership transfer any day.
@Lobstersarefabulouz

Yup. My first watch that wasn't a kids watch is a Swatch Chronograph (I was like 10 or sth). It is hella old and I'm pretty sure the chrono movement (quartz) is broken. Recently found it again under some junk. Gona take it to my watch guy to get it fixed (even though financially it would be cheaper to buy a new one). My next watch that I got was a Tissot as well. I never really wore watches but 2-3 years ago I started to wear them again. Switched out the quartz movement for a better one since it broke too. My watch guy fitted a Nomos leather strap to it and now it looks even nicer. Now I have a Junghans Max Bill and a Werenbach Mach 33 as well. Werenbach is a microbrand from Zürich. The dials of their watches are made from the booster shell of Soyuz rockets that have actually been to space. Right now all my watches are quartz but I am saving up to get a Nomos Tangomat next year.

I've heard these movements are NOT serviceable. They are apparently regulated with a laser and this makes for cheaply-bought accuracy, but also means they cannot be regulated by a watchmaker - you just send it back and they stick in a new balance. Anyone know - is this true?
@RichardHorpe
3 жыл бұрын
i think it applies to the previous gen non-silicon pr80 movements which had a plastic escapement (tissot didn't wanna do it but swatch forced that version of eta on all entry models), the silicium model now has the regular escapement which makes the difference between 23 jewels and 25 jewels on the back. so the new one should be serviceable, but then again they can also just swap in a brand new movement which is easy enough.
@peterdegelaen
3 жыл бұрын
@@RichardHorpe No, that is also not true. The ones with the plastic pallet fork (like the Tissot Le Locle Powermatic 80) can also be regulated and serviced. It has the same balance wheel with the weights, but it has a standard metal hairspring and a plastic pallet fork. I think this misunderstanding started due to Tissot saying that they used laser technology in the assembly proces and people not seeing a standard regulator and so someone decided the movement could not be serviced. That conclusion is blatantly wrong, but unfortunately some people just believed it and started spreading this incorrect info. Also, just replacing the movement would be economically not very wise. As ETA does not publish prices of their movements anymore, I looked at the price of a more or less compatible movement of Sellita (SW200) and that retails at about €175; ETA will certainly not be cheaper. A complete service and revision of a Tissot watch (complete dismantling, repair and replacement of broken parts, cleaning of the case and bracelet etc.) costs €110 (as published on the Tissot website) with a 2 year warranty.

Rolex OP 39 owner here and I have to admit it’s very hard to justify the purchase of a Rolex compared to this watch. For me the biggest differences are the bracelet tapering down to the clasp adds elegance and comfort, the brand name is better with the Rolex, and perhaps the biggest difference is the Rolex would keep it’s value more if I were ever to want to resell it. Overall I would still go with the Rolex, but it hardly seems rational to spend this much for a watch.

Both are Swatch Group brands. Depending on your income level and savings time, you could get this watch now, continue to save, and sell this watch at a very minor loss down the road when you’re ready to upgrade and have an AMAZING watch during your wait. You’re essentially renting it for a couple hundred dollars. If you saves $300/month, you’d have this watch in 2.5 months. It will take you 20 months to save up for the Aqua Terra. Get the Tissot, wear it for 2 years, save for the Omega, sell the Tissot for $450, and upgrade. 1 extra month of saving, but 2 years with a great watch instead of no watch. 👍🏻

The PRX was just too chunky for my taste; I really prefer the round appearance of the Gentleman. It came down to the auto vs quartz movements, and again, the thinner quartz model won out. (I have thick wrists, and an issue with watches that don't slip under my shirt cuffs.) Accuracy has been impressive, within about one second per month. I got it with Tissot's leather strap, which keeps it light and thin and looks very classy. You have to be happy when the one you like the best is also the least expensive - I may get a second one, with green or silver dial (tough choice), and still spend less than a PRX would have cost me. The only downside I can think of is the lack of an anti-reflective coating on the sapphire crystal - I'd have been happy to pay a bit more for that feature.

Thanks for the review. My view is that this Tissot Powermatic, despite a slightly disappointing bracelet (money has to be saved somewhere) is a great offer from an historically relevant brand. For most people, including me, makes more sense buying this watch and saving a good few thousand Euros rather than buying an Omega AquaTerra or a now discontinued Rolex OP39. Given the price, you don’t feel so precious about it and can enjoy the watch in most circumstances and if you scratch the case when changing the strap, it does not ruin your week the same as a scar on your Rolex would. And if you’re lucky, it will keep time fully within COSC spec for Seiko money + services every 5 years won’t require a full month saving to pay for.

Nice overview. Just my two cents: to improve the content, you should go deeper on the caliber. Test it on the ground, compare it against other at the same level and share some more details/ history on the caliber.

I went for the 18k gold bezel version, as I really liked the satinated black dial it came with. It also came on the leather strap and had the 20mm lugs as opposed to the odd lug size of the other auto and quartz Gentlemen. All around beautiful and efficient timepiece.

good review, would say if saving for the Omega, it is over 7 times the price of the Tissot here in the UK so if you have the patience. Maybe a Longines slightly above this budget

Jenni nice review. However, I would like you to compare the Tissot to the Christopher Ward C60 Trident. I think you will find that the 38MM and 40MM sizes that are available on the C60 are bit better that this Tissot for under $1K USD.

I've had this watch for a little over a year now, and I really enjoy it. Importantly, it wasn't a substitute for my Aqua Terra or for any other watch. I purchased it for its own merits. I would certainly recommend this to anyone shopping in the $500-$1000 price range.

Hi Kevin. Do I understand correctly that you have both a Gentleman and an Aqua Terra? I really want the AT but the price tag is giving me a lot of pause, so looking at options like this as alternatives. But if you own both, what makes you go to one over the other (and in what situations)? If you don't mind sharing, it would be helpful feedback. Thanks!
@caktaylor
2 жыл бұрын
@@justthisguyyouknow42 Please keep in mind I bought the AT used in 2016. Prices were much less unreasonable in 2016 compared to today. I don't think I would pay today's prices for an AT, especially a new AT. Mine is the style with the vertical teak dial and the dial is grey. It has a very different character from my bright, blue dialed Gentleman. When I want something more subdued, I go with the AT. When I want something less subdued, the Gentleman is more appropriate. It should be obvious, but the AT is significantly better finished than the Gentleman, particularly the bracelet and clasp. If you'd like to go a bit upmarket, I suggest looking at Longines like the Conquest, Conquest Classic, Master Collection, etc. They now occupy the space that Omega abandoned, and they make great entry level luxury watches. (They aren't quite as good as Omegas were from, say 2000-2010, but they are still quite good.)

I have this watch for about a year now. It is AMAZING! ! It loses 3 seconds a day from day 1 and after 1 year, it is still losing 3 seconds a day. That is within COSC specs. As far as I'm concerned, it can easily compete with the Vacheron Constantin Stainless steel Overseas blue dial but that one is 21K and it does not have second hack and the 80 hours power reserve. It does have a gold rotor, but who sees the rotor when the watch is on your wrist?????

Good call on comparing it to an Aqua Terra. I never really gave the Tissot Gentleman's watch much thought, but I have always liked certain Aqua Terra's. When you made the comparison, I noticed it right away. Very nice review. Thanks for sharing and cheers.

Agree with your sentiments. This is to you, watch companies: Stop losing a third of your market. Please make a 38mm with 46mm lug-to-lug case size watches. This model and the Ballade COSC would be perfect at that size. Sadly, too many companies are just automatically making 40mm or larger watches. Looks like Girard Perregaux just jumped on that bandwagon also. I, for one, won't compromise on case size any longer. This is an 11-1/2 ligne movement that is only 25.6mm in diameter. There is no excuse to not put it in a 38mm case!
