It's actually one of the most difficult things to do when bricks vary. If bricks varty alot then sometimes you will have to stagger perps. So not always...

Make you some bond marks ( plumb lines ) on the wall every 6 brick or so.

You just said what I have never saw: when doing that, we must to keep the line of the previous brick matching with the new one. I always thought that I could possibly lose the alignment (I want to try to bricklaying once in the future). Thanks for this simple but interesting tip!

I’m a professional bricklayer and will add that another way to keep on bond is to center the middle hole of the brick over the head joint of the last course. My way is better when you have brick that aren’t perfectly uniform.

I've been at it over 45 years that being said torturing on KZitem is basically just pissing into the wind. There is SO MUCH MORE to know before you even get to this point. Layout, heights, corners, windows, doors, sills and of course the bond and that's just the tip of the iceberg. I would suggest that you wear safety glasses, sunglasses anything to protect your eyes. The reason why is it's the little things that can come back and bite you in the butt. In this case, he's got mortar ALL OVER the line. Someone catches that line including himself and that mud will fly off,up and out and I guarantee it will find it's way into your eyes, face, you name it. From experience.
